DESCRIPTION:Time to pick-up from where we left off back in May! as we continue this 150 mile odyssey around the outskirts of London through parks\, woods\, suburbs and along rivers. It’s never too late to join…but you’d better hurry up (see later!)\n\nWe go from Hornchurch Country Park Discovery Centre/Cafe to Purfleet – about 8 miles or so\, including a Hill with a View. A chance to drop out at Rainham (Essex). Terrain otherwise is reasonably flat.\n\nIncludes an optional visit to Rainham Hall\, £6.50/(children £3.25)  (National Trust members free)\nOR you can\, I believe\, use their cafe without visiting the property.\n\nThen it’s down along the Thames (not the actual Thames Path which is on the south bank) with a little military and heritage museum (free)\, which may be open\, along the way\, and a cafe at the RSPB reserve Visitor Centre outside Purfleet. Pubs in Rainham and\, I believe\, at the end.\n\nOh dear\, this is\, again I believe (but one can never be absolutely sure!) the end of this ‘running’ of the LOOP\, as we have come all the way around from Erith on the south bank of the Thames since early 2023. It’s probably time to give it a rest for the next period of years\, and go and walk the Great Wall of China\, or something…\n\nBUT BUT BUT if anyone has missed a section and wants to walk it privately\, or with COPSE (either on the programme or ad hoc when there is a gap in the programme) then of course they can do so\, either with or without me! (but I can be an advisor). I leave that hanging in the air…\n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, meet at East Croydon Rail Stn at 9.00am BST (a bit of an early start  – particularly by GMT – but probably worth it for a relaxed day in the end).\n\nWe catch a Thameslink to London Bridge (15 or 21 past the hour would be good)\, Jubilee Line to West Ham\, District Line to Hornchurch Metro\,\nthen a 252 bus to Hornchurch CP (every 10-12 mins\, takes a few minutes).\n\nWe travel mostly in zone 6…but for the journey home from Purfleet this station is in a bit of a grey area as regards TFL zones BUT you CAN use Oyster pay-as-you-go from here back into London. So I’ll leave you to inquire about how this affects your ticket. Rainham (Essex) is the next station stop towards London and IS in Zone 6\, but\, of course\, we stay on the train (so this is to bear in mind if you need to touch with an Oyster card…this is far less complicated than it may sound\, it’ll all fall into place on the day!!).\n\nPaul N (no emails on the day please)\nTel. 07968 223589

DESCRIPTION:For those interested in my “three part” COPSE walk next sunday (27th)\, this\nis the plan =>\n\nWhere to meet\nMeet at the 468 bus stop “KD” from 10.15am  outside the “former” Nestle building => 10.30am bus (approx) to\nWest Norwood high street (takes about 30 minutes) where we’ll then have a coffee/loo stop in West Norwood’s library + “picture house” cinema.\n\nThe walk\nThis leisurely four mike walk will then start outside West Norwood cemetery’s main entrance at 11.30am to find some of it’s many famous graves (including “a sugar magnate + philanthropist”\,\na “domestic goddess” + many more)\, Dulwich village + Crystal Palace park (including the recently refurbished “dinosaurs ”   .)\n\nWe’ll leave by the bottom Penge gate  + then go to either Penge East Station \, Penge West Station or buses to Croydon but there’s an option afterwards to go to “the Bridge House” pub which\nis right next to Penge West Station for drinks + possibly a  meal but being a Sunday afternoon\, it could be busy\, so we’ll just hope there’s some indoor seats left or go into the garden.\n\nIf you have any queries\, please let me know.\n\nKeith S\nmobile/text = 07749 515489\n(which is always switched on !!)\n\n(Alternative travel via train (East Croydon at 14mins  and 44 mins past the hour to West Norwood\, change at Crystal Palace).  Journey takes approx 19 mins.\nYou can also travel from West Croydon train station to West Norwood changing at Balham. DESCRIPTION:Many of the participants in our highly enjoyable group visits to The Manor Resort in Okehampton- whether the one a couple of weeks ago or the one we did last year – were pleased with and proud of their endeavours in the many varieties of craft workshops. \nThis evening event is a chance for them to show off and perhaps explain their achievements\, and for all of us to admire their efforts\, in a relaxed social setting. \nLeftover Currency Launch\nThis evening will also see the launch of our Leftover Currency iniative in aid of Mary’s Meals\, the charity who visited us on 25th August and impressed us greatly with their programmes to feed hungry children around the world. \nDo you have unwanted money left over from foreign holidays and gathering dust at home?  Many of us do\, and collectively we can probably realise a decent amount. Make a simple impact on the lives of children by bringing it along to the club to fill our collection box. Obsolete money is also welcome. There’s no need to sort it by country or anything\, just put it in the box. \nIf your collection is too enormous to carry to the Club we can probably arrange pickup – just ask Ken. \nThey will accept: \n\nNotes\nCoins\nForeign or UK\nObsolete\, eg French Francs\, Spanish Pesetas\nOut-of-date UK\, eg large 10p\n\nWe’ll continue collecting until the end of the year\, when hopefully we’ll be able to make a significant donation.

DESCRIPTION:Dear  Members\,\n\nI’m going to be organising a trip to Guangzhou (Canton) and Hong Kong running from the 28th October to the 11th November. It will be organised along the lines of the Berlin and Amsterdam trips\, that is\, anyone who wants to join the trip will be responsible for booking their own accommodation and transportation. There will\, therefore\, be a fair amount of flexibility in regards to how you travel to the area\, where you choose to stay and when you choose to go. That means that you will be free to leave and join when and where you please.\n\nThe plan for the timing of the trip is to be in Guangzhou for the first 8 days and in Hong Kong for the latter 5 or 6 days. There are flights available where you can fly in to Guangzhou and fly out of Hong Kong and travel between the two is quite straightforward. You could also consider flying into and out of Hong Kong as there is more availability to there from London and flights can be cheaper than flying in to Guangzhou. At the moment\, indirect flights are showing up for around 600 to 650 pounds. Unfortunately\, other than flying\, alternative options are not particularly practical. As for accommodation options\, these are numerous and there are hostels and hotels in both places\, however\, hotels tend to be relatively expensive in Hong Kong whereas in Guangzhou there are many cheap decent hotels available. For example\, I’ve just had a quick look for the period I’m planning on being there and there was a Chinese chain hotel in a good location in Guangzhou (near the Chen Clan Temple) coming up for around 23 pounds a night for a room for 2.\n\nAs some of you may know\, I lived and worked in Guangzhou for some years and I’m planning on showing you the different sides and sites of there. These will be as varied as seeing the more modern buildings such as the Guangzhou Opera House (designed by Zaha Hadid) and the Canton Tower (pictured in the photo attached) to the Qing era buildings which remain; to temples and parks. We may also take day or longer trips out of Guangzhou. As for Hong Kong\, when I was living in Guangzhou\, it was a place I visited fairly regularly and where I used to go hiking. Hong Kong is of course\, known for its urban landscapes and shopping but in addition to that I’m planning on visiting an outlying island or two and taking you on a hike or two.\n\nIf anyone is interested in joining me\, they can email me and I will be able to give them further details\, advice and suggestions.\n\n\n\n\nBest wishes\,\nGreg

Exhibited\, with their fascinating histories\, at our last OBJECTivity evening. \nThis is another opportunity to show off your fine china\, family heirlooms or just\, well\, bits of rock! \nHere are Ireen’s words of enticement again: \nDear Interesting People\, \nThat covers all COPSErs\, one way or another!  We’re such a mixed bunch and with so many different experiences.  Resulting from these\, we must have a wide range of items that would tell a tale of family\, travels\, mysteries\, or hobbies.  This week at our hall objects will be the activity we shall share.   \nPlease bring along anything that you could explain a little about.  This may be something of its history or its sentimental or monetary value.  It might be something amusing or perhaps be an object so unusual that others may not even know what it is – or maybe you don’t know yourself but another Member might be able to identify it for you!   \nPlease bring one to three objects to entertain us and pass them to me at the start of our evening.  If you have extras\, these could also be brought and kept aside\, in case time allows us to explore a few more things.  (Of course\, audience required to enjoy the collection so please come along\, even if you have no objects this time.)  However\, this weekend might afford time for many to find something! \nTeas and coffees between 7.45pm and 8.00pm. \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522)

Welcome to 2027! \nThe occasion is\, of course\, our annual Mystery Auction\, where we have some fun raising cash for our pet charity\, Shelterbox. \n\n\n\n\nIf you’re not familiar with Shelterbox have a look at their website\, https://shelterbox.org/.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nWhat you can do is to \n\nwrap up your goods (unwanted and/or valuable)\n\nand/or \n\nturn up\, enjoy the banter\, and above all place your bids for the mystery parcels.\n\n  \nDon’t worry if you can’t contribute items\, just come along and enjoy the evening. \nFor the uninitiated\, here are Ireen’s words of explanation from her email: \nDear All\, \nFor our “Mystery Auction”\, please spend a few mins in advance\, wrapping your duplicated or unloved objects (rapping\, as you do so\, is optional!) and pass them to me from 8.15pm on Tuesday.  Household / kitchen appliances in good condition – (perhaps never used\, even if intentions were good!) could also be rehomed.  IF there is a content of particularly high value\, you can add a label with a reserve or start price on – likewise\, if the item is only suitable for a male or female recipient.  However\, part of the fun is sometimes when bids disregard the latter\, e.g.\, when Chris T. became the new owner of a lovely\, silky camisole!  (He happily gifted this to a female friend!!) \nWrapping paper need not be new – any kept from opening your own received presents\, be they Xmas\, birthday etc. will be good.  If you have some items to donate but cannot manage to come along in person\, please let me know and I hope I can help by collecting beforehand. \nRe my title\, “Lightening Your Load”: bulging wallets and purses can be brought through the door and you can benefit by carrying them away with far less weight in them!  Also\, please remember that our 2025 techy advance gave us a card machine\, although chequebooks could still be brought!  Once again\, Treasurer Bob will kindly be managing the finance for the evening. \nA quote from the ShelterBox website: \nEMERGENCY DISASTER RELIEF \nFamilies are facing a bitter winter in make shift shelters\, struggling to survive:\nSupporting communities in crisis \nRight now\, over 120 million people around the world have been made homeless by disaster and conflict.
