Thanks to all who responded in time. If you didn’t\, but still want to go\, we may be able to fit you in so please get in touch. Alternatively you can just turn up on the night\, though obviously no guarantee of a place if you do. \nKen \n\nWe’re Going Bowling Again\nBack by popular demand! A party of COPSE’s finest athletes have enjoyed this outing a couple of times\, so we’re doing it again.\nI’ll book (and pay for) as many lanes as we have players for\, maximum six to a lane. \nBut how do I sign up for this event?\n… you may ask. Well\, here’s the answer: \n  \n \nSeveral people subscribed on Tuesday at the Hall. If you didn’t\, I’ll take emails\, text messages\, Whatsapps\, even old fashioned phone calls. \n. . . . and how do I pay?\nBy signing up you commit to paying me the outrageously reasonable sum of £7.90. Averse as I am to handling change\, I prefer direct payments to my bank\, the sooner the better. Ask me for how. \nThe Details\nYou can\, of course\, just turn up to enjoy the social setting and company of your fellow COPSErs for no charge. \nIf you don’t know the place\, the Tenpin Bowl offers a variety of activities besides bowling – table tennis\, pool\, arcade games plus café and bar – so you can diversify once there. Also\, for eating\, there are various fooderies around including Creams Café\, Frankie & Bennie’s\, Chiquito\, McDonalds and Burger King. \nIn summary:\n\n\n\n\nWhere?\n\nTenpin\nValley Park Leisure Complex\nHesterman Way\nCroydon CR0 4YA\n\n\n\nWhen?\n\nLanes will be booked for 8.30. Arrive between 8.00 and  8.15 to be ready to play.\n\n\n\nGetting there?\n\nTram: Ampere Way (9 minute walk\, says Google) \nBuses: \nS4 to Franklin Way / Valley Park (8 minute walk)\n(NOTE the 455 no longer runs) \n189 to Purley Way / Newman Road (12 minute walk) \nAlternatively\, plenty of car parking.\n\n\n\nHow much?\n\n£7.90 up front for two games\, more on the night if you want to play more\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShoe Policy\nI’ve confirmed that\, as last time\, you can play in your own shoes\, but please make sure they’re trainers or otherwise flat-soled. Shoes are now also available on site.

SUMMARY:Talk: Children of the Empire\, with Joyce Trotman
DESCRIPTION:On the 23rd April\, Joyce Trotman will be speaking at our weekly Tuesday evening meeting. Her topic will be Children of the Empire and she will be talking about her experience of growing up in a colony on the periphery of the British Empire\, with a particular emphasis on the education she received. \nA nonagenarian\, Ms Trotman  was born in Georgetown\, Guyana (then British Guiana) in 1927. All of her early schooling was in the British colony of Guiana. In 1955\, after working as a primary school teacher\, she travelled to England where she obtained a degree in Arts from London University and a Certificate in Education at the University of Durham.  Returning to Guyana in 1958\, she was appointed a Senior Lecturer in English at the Government Training College and went on to become a Research Fellow for the University of Guyana.  She settled in England in 1972 and taught at the Scott Lidgett Boys’ Comprehensive School.  She obtained a M. Litt (Linguistics) from the University of Lancaster and was called to the Bar in 1984 on completion of part-time studies in law.  She is the author of ‘Proverbs of Guyana Explained’. \nYou can find some background on Joyce’s life on line\, particularly here. \n

DESCRIPTION:COPSE Photo Competition\nWin a prize!\nThe competition will be judged by you\, COPSE Members\, on Tuesday\, 30th April. \nCategories:\n \nTo enter:\n1. The photo must be taken by you.\n2. Provide up to 8 entries to the competition.\n3. Preferred and maximum print size is A4.\n4. Photo(s) must fall into one of the 8 categories above\n5. Enter any number of photos into any category\, total entries not to exceed 8.\n6. Photos must be presented to Sandra or Ireen by 8.00pm on the Tuesday competition evening or in advance at an earlier Club Night\, if possible. Photo prints must be in an unnamed envelope or opaque folder. On the back of each photo\, write your name\, competition category\, plus type and make of camera\, if known.\n7. The photo(s) must not previously have appeared in our Club competitions.\n8. Captions must not be added to the photo(s) .\n9. The entrant must be an amateur photographer.\n10. The photo(s) may be retrieved after the competition. \nTo win:\n1. You must comply with the above.\n2. Club Members present on the competition evening will vote via secret ballot for their favourite in each category in the first round and as instructed in further rounds.\n3. The top 8 scoring photos together with the highest scoring of each category (if they are not among the top 8) from the first round will go through to the next round of voting (so a maximum of 15 photos going through). Further rounds will be held\, as necessary\, to determine an overall winner.\n4. Photos may be entered on your behalf\, if you cannot attend the evening.\n5. In any matter pertaining to the running of the competition\, or the alteration of these rules outlined above on the evening of the competition\, the Members’ majority decision will be final. \nGood Luck!
