SUMMARY:Pancakes (Shrove Tuesday)
DESCRIPTION:The time for tossing and turning has come around again – no\, not a reference to restless sleep but a reminder that the COPSE Pancake Night will be this week!  A flipping good time can be had. 😁 \nPackets of batter mix with  “just add milk” (or even just water?) are available in many supermarkets for those COPSErs who wish to keep things simple\, although others might like to make their own from scratch\, of course.  Whichever you prefer\, please provide your own batter and accompanying filling ingredients. \nAlso\, we do need to have some extra cooking appliances\, if possible\, so please bring any camping stoves or portable electric hobs you may own\, along with frypans\, spatulas\, plates and cutlery.  (As with our recent Burns Night feast\, clearing away is so aided if COPSErs can pop their own used items into a bag to take back home for cleaning.) \nDuring the evening\, indulge yourselves with self-made food – and become creative by experimenting.  Try the challenge of concocting unusual toppings / fillings and perhaps tempt other brave people to try your results!  Below are some of both savoury and sweet efforts from past years.  (The idea is to not have tried out your thoughts in advance!) \nSavoury\nMushrooms with garlic\, onions\, mixed herbs and cream \nGrated mature Cheddar cheese with optional pickle \nBlue cheese (“upmanship”!) with sun-dried tomatoes \nSardines \nMexican chilli beef \nSweet\nMaltesers \nNutella chocolate spread \nChristmas pudding with crème fraîche (over ten months to replace the pud!) \nLemon curd sprinkled with ground ginger \nA slight spread of butter\, drizzled over by various flavoured coffee syrups \n… and\, of course\, the traditional fresh lemon juice and sugar! \nAs well as devouring our pancakes\, we may once more have a tossing contest for anyone who wishes to take part.  (Appropriate photo of Tim wheeled out again.) \n \nCome to beat and eat\, chew and chat.  Shrove Tuesday usually proves to be a pleasantly sociable Club Night. \n  \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522)

SUMMARY:Cycling the Great Divide with Sally & Tim
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe it was as long ago as September 2021 that COPSE Honorary Members Sally and Tim astonished us with their story and photos of cycling the peaks of Patagonia. In a long overdue return they’re going to regale us with their adventures cycling the Great Divide. \n \n“What’s that?”\, you ask.\nThe Divide in question is the Continental Divide – this red line from the Rockies to Mexico. Apparently\, rivers to the left of it flow into the Pacific\, while those to the right flow into the Atlantic / Gulf of Mexico. \nIt’s an established cycling route of over 3000 miles\, “the longest off-pavement route in the world” – did they really travel that far? Turn up and find out. From what we learned last time\, this will be a display of amazing photos to illustrate some hair-raising tales of life on the road.

SUMMARY:Talk: Children of the Empire\, with Joyce Trotman
DESCRIPTION:On the 23rd April\, Joyce Trotman will be speaking at our weekly Tuesday evening meeting. Her topic will be Children of the Empire and she will be talking about her experience of growing up in a colony on the periphery of the British Empire\, with a particular emphasis on the education she received. \nA nonagenarian\, Ms Trotman  was born in Georgetown\, Guyana (then British Guiana) in 1927. All of her early schooling was in the British colony of Guiana. In 1955\, after working as a primary school teacher\, she travelled to England where she obtained a degree in Arts from London University and a Certificate in Education at the University of Durham.  Returning to Guyana in 1958\, she was appointed a Senior Lecturer in English at the Government Training College and went on to become a Research Fellow for the University of Guyana.  She settled in England in 1972 and taught at the Scott Lidgett Boys’ Comprehensive School.  She obtained a M. Litt (Linguistics) from the University of Lancaster and was called to the Bar in 1984 on completion of part-time studies in law.  She is the author of ‘Proverbs of Guyana Explained’. \nYou can find some background on Joyce’s life on line\, particularly here. \n

Photos must be presented to Sandra or Ireen by 8.00pm on the Tuesday competition evening or in advance at an earlier Club Night\, if possible. Photo prints must be in an unnamed envelope or opaque folder. On the back of each photo\, write your name\, competition category\, plus type and make of camera\, if known.\n7. The photo(s) must not previously have appeared in our Club competitions.\n8. Captions must not be added to the photo(s) .\n9. The entrant must be an amateur photographer.\n10. The photo(s) may be retrieved after the competition. \nTo win:\n1. You must comply with the above.\n2. Club Members present on the competition evening will vote via secret ballot for their favourite in each category in the first round and as instructed in further rounds.\n3. The top 8 scoring photos together with the highest scoring of each category (if they are not among the top 8) from the first round will go through to the next round of voting (so a maximum of 15 photos going through). DESCRIPTION:It’s time for COPSErs to rummage among their bits and pieces\, their mementoes and their treasures. \nBe they exotic items from far-flung places or homely items with a little tale to tell\, please find and bring along some objects to display this Tuesday.  Even ordinary-looking something-or-others can hold the attention of an audience\, when their significance is explained. \nThe humorous\, the sentimental\, the puzzling\, the educational – all can find their tabletop place.  If you have several objects that could be displayed\, please choose up to three to put out initially\, with some you keep aside for if time allows further contributions.  If you can please pass Ireen your first items in a bag\, they can make their appearance anonymously and people can begin the evening by perusing the display.  (Let Ireen know if something is too delicate for others to handle.) \nWe’ve previously viewed a special musicbox (with a slightly “spooky” tale attached)\, tools\, carvings\, a cabbage press\, bells\, a skull(😱) . . . and a great variety of other things.  Some of the stories behind each object have taken us on virtual travels\, far and wide. \nI wonder where we shall go this week!

DESCRIPTION:A Special Event!\nAs a timely follow on to Julie’s Dickens Walk\, we’ve managed to secure the services of author\, magician\, and Dickens expert Ian Keable to present his show: \nCharles Dickens\, Conjuror: Playbill of his Most Famous Show\n \n\nCharles Dickens was an amateur conjurer for around seven years of his life\, from the time he wrote A Christmas Carol to David Copperfield.  His best known performance was on the Isle of Wight in 1849; he wrote a highly amusing\, and informative playbill to promote this show.  This playbill\, where Dickens called himself the ‘Unparalleled Necromancer’\, provides the focus to talk about how Dickens was inspired to take up magic\, which other conjurers influenced him\, whether he was any good as a conjurer and how he depicted\, and wrote about\, magic in his own books\, articles and letters.  The talk includes a description of some of Dickens’ tricks from his own repertoire\, plus some performances by Ian.  Any questions are allowed – apart from ‘how do you do it!?’ \n\nCheck Ian’s website for more details\, including video of his TV appearances. \nThis show comes highly recommended so it is bound to be popular. A former staff member with with the Rough Guides and The Independent\, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2011\, and was chairman of the Authors’ Club from 2008 to 2015. \nAn experienced public speaker\, he has addressed literary festivals\, bookshop events\, learned societies and community groups\, and is available for speaking engagements.
