SUMMARY:Architectural Walk\, London
DESCRIPTION:Hello all \nThis will be a walk visiting less well known buildings in London. \nWe can ease the meeting time at East Croydon to 9.40\, for the 9.49 train to Victoria\, then Circle or District line to Blackfriars (no direct trains to Blackfriars). \nIf you want to join us at Victoria\, let me know\, and we will be by the toilets\, leaving by 10.15. Or join us at Blackfriars station by 10.30. \nThe distance will be about 8 km/5 miles. You can bring a packed lunch\, but there will be a choice of cafes at lunchtime. \nWe will return from London Bridge\, about 16.00\, but no problem if you want to return earlier. \nWe have about 25 sites to view of different types and ages\, many of which may be new to you. I will only give a brief description of each one. \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys – Stroll 3 – a Night Out!
DESCRIPTION:This is the walk originally scheduled for 21st September but postponed due to sickness.\nWe were all so impressed with the Pepys Walk last December that we did a Second Instalment in February. If it’s worth doing\, it’s worth flogging to death\, so here we are for a third go.\n  \n\n\nWhere?\nAgain we’ll be following the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time seeking out the many places he went to for a good night out – of which he was an enthusiast. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will continue to persist in offering their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 3-4 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 5-6 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. As it’s in central London\, there’s plenty of access to public transport if you want to leave the walk early. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 11.15 East Croydon Platform 4 to Victoria\, then tube from Victoria to St James’s Park (District & Circle line) to save a bit of walking at the start. \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.00\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nAt Victoria station from our scheduled arrival time about 11.33\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/gladiators.zooms.sweep\n\n\n\n\nAt the entrance to St James’ Park\, junction of The Mall with Marlborough Road\, where we start the walk\, from our expected arrival time about 11.45-12.00\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/pool.shrimp.linked\n\n\n\n  \nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nFinishing\nWe finish in The Borough\, handy for London Bridge station and a couple of interesting pubs. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. SUMMARY:Epping Ongar Railway Beer Festival
DESCRIPTION:This involves journeying to Epping to the north west of London at the end of the London Underground Central Line.  There we will find the “Epping Ongar” heritage railway – lots of description at the website https://www.eorailway.co.uk/.\n\n\nSunday 28 July is the last day of their Real Ale and Cider Festival https://www.eorailway.co.uk/events/real-ale-and-cider-festival/.\n\n\nAs well as enjoying steam engines\, old railway stuff\, riding old trains and hanging around delightful stations in picturesque Essex countryside\, you can enjoy the dulcet tones of London’s Transport Choir featuring yours truly. There are food stalls as well as a beer stall at North Weald station.  And beer sold on trains and at Ongar.\n\nTickets\nYou will need a ticket for the Epping Ongar Railway beer and cider festival event.  Get it here: https://www.eorailway.co.uk/events/real-ale-and-cider-festival/.\n\n\nGetting There\nI recommend getting there by public transport.  A bit of a trek maybe but ‘just’ a ride to the end of the Central Line\, transfer to a specially provisioned heritage bus (included in event ticket) for a short ride to North Weald station.  See notes below.  From where trains depart south to the old Epping Forest station (no alighting!) or north to Ongar station.  The route was until the 1980’s part of the London Underground system.  (The heritage trains running now are full size mainline type not old ‘tube trains’.)\n\n\nMore details in the links shared above.\n\nNotes\n\n\nThe Central Line does not directly connect with the heritage railway.  It is necessary to take a (specially provisioned heritage) bus from Epping station.  Suitable bus departures are 10.25 or 10.55.  The journey from Epping LU station to the heritage railway is 10 minutes.\nI intend to be at Epping for the 10.25 bus.  So that means catching the 9.03 Thameslink from East Croydon.  So that in turn means meeting at 8.50.  If you prefer not such an early start\, you could slip these times by half an hour.\nIn order to get the most out of the choir in action\, I think you should arrive at the Epping Ongar railway (North Weald station) by 11.30.  So\, as previously mentioned\, that means the connecting bus from Epping LU station at 10.55.  (Or 10.25 earlier\, which will enable you to do a quick trip from North Weald to Epping Forest and back by 11.30.)\nAllow 1 hour and 20 minutes East Croydon to Epping LU station.\nConfused?  Even more detail on heritage train timetable and connecting heritage bus timetable here: https://www.eorailway.co.uk/visit/date/28-07-2024/\nStill confused?  Just meet me at East Croydon ticket hall at 8.50am sharp.\nWe travel to London Bridge first.  Walk across to Bank underground station (or tube it if feeling lazy / pressed for time) and pick up the Central Line.\nWe depart Epping around 5pm for return home.\nI will be able to inform you where and when the choir are performing nearer the time – preferably share with you during the journey there if you make the early start.\n\n\n\n\n\nCheers!\nAndrew

SUMMARY:Woolwich Dockyards Walk
DESCRIPTION:I will be leading a walk on Sunday 16th June to Woolwich Dockyard. \nWe will meet at East Croydon station at 9.50 to catch the 10:03 East Croydon (platform 4) Thameslink towards Bedford which arrives 10:20 London Bridge. Then we catch the 10:31 from London Bridge (platform 1) to Woolwich Dockyard arriving at 10.50. \nIf you wish to meet at London Bridge or Woolwich Dockyard please let me know. \nI aim that we visit both Woolwich Dockyard and the Woolwich Arsenal during the walk which will take around 4 hours and about 8 km (5 miles). \nIt will be along paved areas and through parks so light walking shoes are fine. \nFor added excitement I am planning that we sail on the Woolwich Ferry to North Woolwich and return via the foot tunnel. \nWe will end up at the Great Harry\, the Wetherspoons pub in Woolwich\, for a late lunch at about 3 pm -so you might like to bring a sandwich to keep you going. \nWe will return from Woolwich Arsenal station to London Bridge\, and then to East Croydon station. \nLet me know if you are going to come along and look forward to seeing you on Sunday 16th! \nCheers \nAndy Thompson \n07751182930 \n

SUMMARY:Dorking - Day of Dance; Reigate Summer Festival - Evening
DESCRIPTION:Any COPSErs who come down to Dorking can gather to watch some colourful and energetic dancing\, wander around the quite pleasant town together\, locating a few of the local pubs\, share a lunch break in one of those –  or choose between the many coffee shops and other eateries.\n\nI leave individuals to work out their own transport arrangements (at present\, I am still in Berlin!) but I shall be travelling to Dorking by car.\n\nI suggest those wanting to enjoy the mass dance display at the start\, head for arrival at the Dorking Halls by 10.30am.  I aim to be there by then and shall be looking for some of you!\n\nTo conclude the day out\, please continue to the bottom of this message to see input from Margaret\, with her invitation to transfer eastwards to Reigate for the evening.\n\nHopefully\, phone signals will be good in Dorking town and any of you can reach me on my mobile\, as the daytime progresses.\n\nRegards\,\n\nIreen Best 07968 035522\n\n\n\n\n\n \nIreen and I are joining forces to offer an evening of music in Reigate to complement your Day of Dance in Dorking. It is very easy to get to Reigate from Dorking by train or bus. \n \nReigate Summer Festival: Home – Reigate Summer Festival is a new event for this year celebrating  various local arts groups.\n \nI will be there to promote Renewed Hope\, one of the three charities being supported by the festival:Reigate Summer Festival 2024 – GiveWheel.\n \nI suggest meeting at the Market Stores pub from 18:00 to discover what is on:\nSchedule – Reigate Summer Festival. The pub is very close to the main music venue\, the Tunnel Stage. We could also find somewhere to eat\, but it would be good to book this in advance.\n\nRegards\n \nMargaret

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Brighton
DESCRIPTION:During May Brighton is bursting with life thanks to the Brighton Festival https://brightonfestival.org/ and Brighton Fringe https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/? \n\nIf you are up for a loosely organised amble around the town and some of its FREE performing arts events and laines and beachfront bars\, please come along.   Timings below. \n\nThere is also a ticketed event in the fringe that I think would appeal and is at a sensible time: https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/the-flying-bubble-show/  The Flying Bubble Show.  And for which tickets  are available.  “Dive into The Flying Bubble Show\, where dreams and reality blur in a breathtaking fusion of bubble magic and aerial flying.”  1pm;  standard ticket £14  concession £12.   Please buy your own ticket.   Or if you’d like me to book for you\, let me know.   I have booked myself a ticket.  \n  \nRough plan for the day: \n\nMeet East Croydon 9.45am / buy rail tickets (Thameslink day return £15.50 before concessions) \n09.59 Train to Brighton \n10.48 Train arrives Brighton \n11am to 12.30pm amble through North Laine area with its quirky shops and cafes \n12.45 arrive at Fool’s Paradise\, venue for\, at 1.00pm\, The Flying Bubble Show\, see above \n2.00pm  exit show and find lunch \n3.00pm to 6.00pm amble beachfront and multiple FREE performance events (e.g. World Kiosk\, Anchored in Air *\, The Journey\, Neolithic Cannibals: Deep Listening to the Unheard\, Days of Wonder\, Ooze Machines ) \n\n* For “Anchored in Air” the one show is at 2.30pm so we would have to work out where that venue is and hot foot it. \n\nThen around 6.00pm we should have easy / takeaway food (e.g. fish and chips) and find somewhere to collapse for a drink – beachfront bar maybe.   Possibly a restaurant but that would be a major challenge to accommodate a group during a festival Saturday? \n\nThen around 8.00pm\, unless we have found another event to attend I think we will be happy to set off back home. \n\nBy all means explore the festival and fringe programme and suggest events we could go to. \nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Visit to the Royal Institution
DESCRIPTION:A London walk  to the Royal Institution (free entry)\, and other mystery places of interest\, including a free visit to the Collection Gallery at the Royal Academy of Arts. Julie and myself will be co-leading the walk. \nThe Royal Institution of Great Britain (often the Royal Institution\, abbreviated Ri or RI) is an organisation for scientific education and research. Throughout its history\, the Institution has supported public engagement with science through a programme of lectures\, many of which continue today. The most famous of these are the annual Royal Institution Christmas Lectures\, founded by Michael Faraday in 1825\, which are televised every year on the BBC. You will also be able to see the actual laboratory where Michael Faraday made some of his fundamental discoveries and you will also get to visit a museum in the RI\, showing various discoveries made there. \nWe will be meeting at East Croydon station 9.30 am\, hoping to catch the 9.45 am train Plat 4\, to Victoria station. We will be walking from Victoria to the Royal Institution near Green Park. There are toilets at Victoria station and at our destinations. I suggest you bring refreshments\, in which you can have the opportunity to have them in the seating area of the courtyard at the Royal Academy of Arts. There are also cafes inside the Royal Institution and the Royal Academy of Arts. After\, we are planning to walk around St James’ Park and then walk back to Victoria\, and find a pub there in Victoria. \nAny questions\, please do not hesitate to email me. \nKind regards\, \nMaria

SUMMARY:Brutalist Architecture Walk
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon walk finishing with an option for an early evening pizza near Norwood Junction station. \nMeet at East Croydon station at 2pm. \nThe title of the walk\, as put forward to the Copse November planning meeting\, is “The brutalist architecture of Croydon and South Norwood”. I got the idea from an event at Bookseller Crow entitled “Concretopia: a brutal decade” a talk by Croydon author John Grinrod which was attended by Val\, Alan and myself. This was supplemented by the “Little Manhattan” audio tour supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and more recently by Elain Harwood’s “Brutalist Britain” which includes buildings in Croydon and South Norwood. \nMost of the buildings we will visit will be in central Croydon so we will leave from outside East Croydon station at 2pm. If anyone is running late (hopefully not!) my number is 07931 533785. Due to weekend engineering works we will later take one of the several buses that run between Croydon and South Norwood to see the last few buildings on my tour there. I plan to end the tour at the Shelverdine Goathouse pub (7-8 High Street\, South Norwood SE25 6EP) for drinks and then to order in takeaways to the pub (they don’t charge for this) from local eateries of your choice eg pizza\, Chinese\, Thai should wish to stay for something to eat. \nFOR THOSE WISHING TO STAY FOR OR JUST COME TO THE GOATHOUSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP SO I CAN ENSURE WE HAVE SUFFICIENT SEATING  \nThank you and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday \nJulie \n

SUMMARY:Kew Gardens Christmas Winter Light Show
DESCRIPTION:As part of their Christmas celebrations\, Kew Gardens are running their annual spectacular Winter Lights trail through the gardens from 15 November 2023 to 7 January 2024. I am intending to go on Wednesday 22 November arriving for the 6pm time slot. Anyone who would like to join me would be very welcome. I went to this trail last year and can thoroughly recommend it. \nYou will need to buy your own ticket. If the 6pm time slot is sold out you could try and book for the 6.20 slot. The cost is £22.50 (off peak charge) Plus £2.50 transaction fee. You can protect your ticket against illness or accident for £1.65. It also protects against transport disruption\, not known about at the time of booking. To buy tickets go to https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens/whats-on/christmas. There you will find all the information you need. You should note that there are no refunds for bad weather unless the event is cancelled because of safety concerns. \n If you are joining me make sure you pick the 6pm time slot (if it’s still available) and if\, like me\, you are coming by public transport also pick the Elizabeth Gate as your entry point. If coming by car you can reserve a space when you purchase your ticket in Kew’s Ferry Lane Car Park. There are also spaces at the National Archives Car Park. Your entry point would be the Brentford Gate. For those who haven’t been there\, Kew Gardens is easy to reach by train from East Croydon via Clapham Junction to Kew Bridge Station\, from where it’s an 8-10 minute walk to the gardens. \nThe trail is approximately 3 km and takes up to 2 hours to walk through. Once you are inside the gardens you can spend as long as you like\, although there is a one way system. There are stalls along the way selling food and hot drinks. The cafe by the Victoria Gate will also be open. The trail is described on the website as follows \nIt’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. \nDiscover glittering tunnels of light\, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour. \nFor a moment of reflection\, pause at mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden\, wander beneath larger-than-life illuminations and don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way. \nPlease let me know if you would like to join me – It’s best that you buy your ticket(s) as soon as possible since this event is very popular. Depending on the interest I will send out details later of meeting times at either East Croydon or the Elizabeth Gate.

SUMMARY:Geology Walk. (Croydon Minster to Addington Village + Pub)
DESCRIPTION:Andy will take us on an educational stroll – things you never knew about Croydon geology. \nThe Croydon Geology Walk will start from Croydon Minster Parish Church near Reeves Corner at 11 am on Sunday 12th November. \nThe walk starts in Croydon town centre\, crosses parkland\, goes through woods and up a steep wooded hill and down a gentle gradient along roads and to Addington Park. \nDistance about 4 miles or 6.2km. \nWe should get to The Harvesters Cricketers pub in Addington between 1.30 and 2 dependent on dawdling and field conditions. \nThe pub serves food. I’ve never eaten there but I guess its standard “old favorites” Harvesters fare. \nThe Addington Village Interchange for buses and trams is across the way. \nCheers! \nAndy

SUMMARY:Geeks Transport Tour of London
DESCRIPTION:Join other transport geeks\, enthusiasts and day trippers for a ride on and visit to some of London’s newest transport infrastructure and trains\, with an emphasis on the East.   Naturally transport providers have thwarted some best laid plans through timetable changes and bus replacement.  So unfortunately we won’t be travelling on the shortest rail service in the UK (Upminster to Romford) or travelling direct from Liverpool Street to Barking. \nAssemble 10.30am sharp at East Croydon station ticket hall ready for a 10.42 train to London Bridge.  You are responsible for buying suitable ticket.  Contactless or Oyster  card would be the best. \nIn spite of the disappointment of not visiting Upminster\, we will pass through some lesser used stations (as far as Croydonians are concerned) such as Canon Street and Fenchurch Street.  We will see evidence of multimillion\, ongoing capacity upgrade at Bank station\, travel on two brand new lines including gawping at the River Thames from the upcoming Barking Riverside development and its new station and take a convoluted route (via Wanstead Park / Forest Gate (Elizabeth Line)) to Romford to see what’s there (the Croydon of East London?).  After all that\, we will probably want to rush back to the more familiar central London. \nAt this stage / afternoon there may be other places to go\, trains to see that I have not thought of – do contribute ideas. \nPubs around Covent Garden will be busy with weekend and theatre custom (in fact desired pub is booked out till May) so I plan a conclusion at The Castle\, Farringdon from where people can find their Thameslink way home when they please (“London Terminals” national rail ticket / season is not valid at Farringdon\, so contactless and Oyster is best).   Those who wish may like to have a late afternoon / early evening meal there and if that is the case let me know by Wednesday 15 February so I can try and secure a table(s).
