SUMMARY:Kew Gardens Christmas Winter Light Show
DESCRIPTION:As part of their Christmas celebrations\, Kew Gardens are running their annual spectacular Winter Lights trail through the gardens from 15 November 2023 to 7 January 2024. I am intending to go on Wednesday 22 November arriving for the 6pm time slot. Anyone who would like to join me would be very welcome. I went to this trail last year and can thoroughly recommend it. \nYou will need to buy your own ticket. If the 6pm time slot is sold out you could try and book for the 6.20 slot. The cost is £22.50 (off peak charge) Plus £2.50 transaction fee. You can protect your ticket against illness or accident for £1.65. It also protects against transport disruption\, not known about at the time of booking. To buy tickets go to https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens/whats-on/christmas. There you will find all the information you need. You should note that there are no refunds for bad weather unless the event is cancelled because of safety concerns. \n If you are joining me make sure you pick the 6pm time slot (if it’s still available) and if\, like me\, you are coming by public transport also pick the Elizabeth Gate as your entry point. If coming by car you can reserve a space when you purchase your ticket in Kew’s Ferry Lane Car Park. There are also spaces at the National Archives Car Park. Your entry point would be the Brentford Gate. For those who haven’t been there\, Kew Gardens is easy to reach by train from East Croydon via Clapham Junction to Kew Bridge Station\, from where it’s an 8-10 minute walk to the gardens. \nThe trail is approximately 3 km and takes up to 2 hours to walk through. Once you are inside the gardens you can spend as long as you like\, although there is a one way system. There are stalls along the way selling food and hot drinks. The cafe by the Victoria Gate will also be open. The trail is described on the website as follows \nIt’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. \nDiscover glittering tunnels of light\, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour. \nFor a moment of reflection\, pause at mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden\, wander beneath larger-than-life illuminations and don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way. \nPlease let me know if you would like to join me – It’s best that you buy your ticket(s) as soon as possible since this event is very popular. Depending on the interest I will send out details later of meeting times at either East Croydon or the Elizabeth Gate.

SUMMARY:Geology Walk. (Croydon Minster to Addington Village + Pub)
DESCRIPTION:Andy will take us on an educational stroll – things you never knew about Croydon geology. \nThe Croydon Geology Walk will start from Croydon Minster Parish Church near Reeves Corner at 11 am on Sunday 12th November. \nThe walk starts in Croydon town centre\, crosses parkland\, goes through woods and up a steep wooded hill and down a gentle gradient along roads and to Addington Park. \nDistance about 4 miles or 6.2km. \nWe should get to The Harvesters Cricketers pub in Addington between 1.30 and 2 dependent on dawdling and field conditions. \nThe pub serves food. I’ve never eaten there but I guess its standard “old favorites” Harvesters fare. \nThe Addington Village Interchange for buses and trams is across the way. \nCheers! \nAndy

SUMMARY:Geeks Transport Tour of London
DESCRIPTION:Join other transport geeks\, enthusiasts and day trippers for a ride on and visit to some of London’s newest transport infrastructure and trains\, with an emphasis on the East.   Naturally transport providers have thwarted some best laid plans through timetable changes and bus replacement.  So unfortunately we won’t be travelling on the shortest rail service in the UK (Upminster to Romford) or travelling direct from Liverpool Street to Barking. \nAssemble 10.30am sharp at East Croydon station ticket hall ready for a 10.42 train to London Bridge.  You are responsible for buying suitable ticket.  Contactless or Oyster  card would be the best. \nIn spite of the disappointment of not visiting Upminster\, we will pass through some lesser used stations (as far as Croydonians are concerned) such as Canon Street and Fenchurch Street.  We will see evidence of multimillion\, ongoing capacity upgrade at Bank station\, travel on two brand new lines including gawping at the River Thames from the upcoming Barking Riverside development and its new station and take a convoluted route (via Wanstead Park / Forest Gate (Elizabeth Line)) to Romford to see what’s there (the Croydon of East London?).  After all that\, we will probably want to rush back to the more familiar central London. \nAt this stage / afternoon there may be other places to go\, trains to see that I have not thought of – do contribute ideas. \nPubs around Covent Garden will be busy with weekend and theatre custom (in fact desired pub is booked out till May) so I plan a conclusion at The Castle\, Farringdon from where people can find their Thameslink way home when they please (“London Terminals” national rail ticket / season is not valid at Farringdon\, so contactless and Oyster is best).   Those who wish may like to have a late afternoon / early evening meal there and if that is the case let me know by Wednesday 15 February so I can try and secure a table(s).

SUMMARY:Stanley Halls Ceilidh - a Chance to Dance!
DESCRIPTION:A good number of COPSErs regularly enjoyed these monthly sessions\, prior to lockdown.  If you look carefully at the photo below\, you may spot a couple of our Members enjoying themselves. \nTake your feet for a treat – my term for these traditional dances is “exercise with a smile on your face”! \n \nPrices:  We can gain a good price of £9 per person\, if we pre-book at least ten tickets.  (Normal advance adult tickets are £12\, on-the-door £15.)  Please come back to me\, as soon as possible\, if you’re able to join us on Friday.  I shall pay for the group’s tickets and you can settle with me on the evening.  (Obviously\, you need to be definite about coming to be included in this discounted price.) \nIf you have not been to a ceilidh/barn dance before\, do not fear; all the sequences of movements are explained by a “caller” and we usually have a very good time. \nThe Halls have a bar.  Parking is free in the area.  Public transport options are: \nBuses: Routes 196 and 410 stop directly outside of Stanley Arts. \nRoutes 75\, 157\, 197 and 312 stop within a few minutes’ walk. \nTrains: Stanley Arts is just a five minute walk from Norwood Junction station. \nDo come back to me with any queries. \nIreen Best 07968 035522 \n\nIn Stanley Arts’ own words: \nCome one\, come all for a night of dancing and merriment just like the good old days! \nBack in November 2019\, when no one knew the word “Covid”\, The Conquering Heroes played a ceilidh (traditional dance) at Stanley Halls and an amazing time was had by all. Now you – yes you! – can join us for such a night once again! \nCame last time? Relive the glory days of pre-pandemic life!  Missed out on the fun last time around? Don’t miss out again! Never heard of a ceilidh? Worried that you won’t know what do to? Think you are a terrible dancer? Have no fear! Our experienced callers will teach you the steps to some of the world’s favourite group and partner dances.

SUMMARY:Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor
DESCRIPTION:Meet at East Croydon by 09:50 for the 10:03 train \nBack in the 70’s George Harrison bought the Hare Krishna movement a manor house in Hertfordshire. 50 years later it’s still going strong. \nVisitors are welcome\, and there are lots of activities. \nYou don’t need to join their cult to enjoy the visit\, just tell them you are already in COPSE. There is no entrance fee\, but it would be fair for us to all make a donation. \nWe have an offer from them to open their old gate in the village\, which is usually locked\, to let us in on foot. We could get our own monk to open the magic door to let us in like VIPs (Very Important Pilgrims). This might or might not happen. If not we can walk down to the main entrance by Holland Farm\, as shows on the map below. \nThey offer free food\, but it might still be a good idea to bring snacks and drinks. \nThe network of many footpaths would allow us to take an alternative route back to the station. Also we could continue West to return by Watford Junction.

SUMMARY:Visit to Bletchley Park
DESCRIPTION:Meet at East Croydon station by 10 to get a direct train to Bletchley. Please by your return ticket in advance so you are ready to go. \nEntrance is £21 or £18.50 for over 60s (bring proof) and if you are English Heritage members is £16.80 or £14.50 for over 60s. We can get tickets on the door or you can prebook yours through their website. \nBletchley Park closes at 4pm in winter so we could catch the 4.17 or drop in for a drink at the Eight Bells and catch the next/later train. \nMost of you probably know about it from the 2014 film the Imitation Game starring Benedict Cummerbatch. It was the M16 code breaking centre famous for Alan Turing breaking the Enigma code. Is it said to have turned the outcome of the war to our favour and shortening the war by c 3 years obviously saving very many lives. Here is a web link so you can find out more about what there is to see. \nhttps://bletchleypark.org.uk/event_type/exhibition/ \nFor any further questions contact Julie on 07931 533785 and let Julie know by Friday lunchtime if you intend to go.

SUMMARY:Hidden London – Lib’s London Walk
DESCRIPTION:Assemble from 11:15 at East Croydon station ticket hall for the 11:34 To London Bridge. \n  \nExplore\, hike\, discover\, marvel and wonder at the hidden secrets of Croydon’s companion town\, Londinium\, far away “over the water” * \n  \n“Hidden London” theme means this is all a little hush hush. We will pass by and visit a series of hidden features. Some hidden from sight\, some hidden in plain sight. \n  \nAfter finding some hidden places in the immediate vicinity of London Bridge\, we will take a mystery trip to a hidden corner of London\, where we will hike on a hidden path for around five miles. \n  \nOur outbound train arrives at London bridge 11:48\, so you can join us there instead. If you’re late or otherwise miss us\, we’ll be in the general area for about one hour\, so you can track is down by phone or other magical means. \n  \nExpect all the walking to be completed in daylight\, before finding a hidden station to take us back on a hidden route to good old Croydon\, by which time it might just have gone dark. All the transport links are within the TFL zones 1-6.
