SUMMARY:Stanley Halls Ceilidh - a Chance to Dance!
DESCRIPTION:A good number of COPSErs regularly enjoyed these monthly sessions\, prior to lockdown.  If you look carefully at the photo below\, you may spot a couple of our Members enjoying themselves. \nTake your feet for a treat – my term for these traditional dances is “exercise with a smile on your face”! \n \nPrices:  We can gain a good price of £9 per person\, if we pre-book at least ten tickets.  (Normal advance adult tickets are £12\, on-the-door £15.)  Please come back to me\, as soon as possible\, if you’re able to join us on Friday.  I shall pay for the group’s tickets and you can settle with me on the evening.  (Obviously\, you need to be definite about coming to be included in this discounted price.) \nIf you have not been to a ceilidh/barn dance before\, do not fear; all the sequences of movements are explained by a “caller” and we usually have a very good time. \nThe Halls have a bar.  Parking is free in the area.  Public transport options are: \nBuses: Routes 196 and 410 stop directly outside of Stanley Arts. \nRoutes 75\, 157\, 197 and 312 stop within a few minutes’ walk. \nTrains: Stanley Arts is just a five minute walk from Norwood Junction station. \nDo come back to me with any queries. \nIreen Best 07968 035522 \n\nIn Stanley Arts’ own words: \nCome one\, come all for a night of dancing and merriment just like the good old days! \nBack in November 2019\, when no one knew the word “Covid”\, The Conquering Heroes played a ceilidh (traditional dance) at Stanley Halls and an amazing time was had by all. Now you – yes you! – can join us for such a night once again! \nCame last time? Relive the glory days of pre-pandemic life!  Missed out on the fun last time around? Don’t miss out again! Never heard of a ceilidh? Worried that you won’t know what do to? Think you are a terrible dancer? Have no fear! Our experienced callers will teach you the steps to some of the world’s favourite group and partner dances.

SUMMARY:Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor
DESCRIPTION:Meet at East Croydon by 09:50 for the 10:03 train \nBack in the 70’s George Harrison bought the Hare Krishna movement a manor house in Hertfordshire. 50 years later it’s still going strong. \nVisitors are welcome\, and there are lots of activities. \nYou don’t need to join their cult to enjoy the visit\, just tell them you are already in COPSE. There is no entrance fee\, but it would be fair for us to all make a donation. \nWe have an offer from them to open their old gate in the village\, which is usually locked\, to let us in on foot. We could get our own monk to open the magic door to let us in like VIPs (Very Important Pilgrims). This might or might not happen. If not we can walk down to the main entrance by Holland Farm\, as shows on the map below. \nThey offer free food\, but it might still be a good idea to bring snacks and drinks. \nThe network of many footpaths would allow us to take an alternative route back to the station. Also we could continue West to return by Watford Junction.

SUMMARY:London Open Gardens
DESCRIPTION:London opens it’s often inaccessable and rarely open gardens to the public. Always good fun as we travel from garden to garden using the best form of public transport available (almost a geek’s tour!). Beware\, lots of walking involved too. \nWe will put together a rough itinerary to make best use of our time and try to vary the gardens we visit. There are often oportunites to pick up food from stalls for lunch\, but would advise bringing something to eat with you. There may be an opportunity to stop in London for a meal in the evening. \nIf you want to come you can buy your ticket online for £15.00. If you buy it on the day it is £20.00. Purchase tickets in advance at http://www.opensquares.org/2018/home/index.php. \nPlease note that NOT all gardens sell tickets\, so the first one we go to may not be selling tickets. Please try and purchase tickets in advance.

DESCRIPTION:An afternoon visiting the National Gallery in London. Preceeding this\, there is an optional lunchtime swim “with a difference” at UCL pool. A ‘swim with a difference’ simply means that no costumes are worn otherwise it’s a usual full length pool with a proper deep end and some lanes for more serious swimmers\, life guards and rather good cubicle showers\, with a choice of hot or lukewarm water. You still need to bring a towel please. Cost is £10.00\, but if you pay £15.00 you get a card for a ‘free’ entry next time you go.

SUMMARY:Postal Museum Visit
DESCRIPTION:Explore the surprising history of one of the greatest of British inventions\, the post – the beginnings of the earliest social network. Plus ride the underground mail rail and a meal out in London. \nMeet at East Croydon Station main ticket hall at 11:30 -11:40 am on Saturday morning\, ready to go to London Bridge. We aim to catch a train at 11:48 or 11:51. \nFrom London Bridge\, we will walk to the Museum\, stopping for a couple of things to see along the way. The distance is just about 2.5 miles\, and with stops might take a couple of hours. You will probably see these things along the way: \n\n– something that happens in London about 1000 times a year\, which you might never have seen.\n– 4000 daffodils in a square\n– an unusual view of London from a rooftop.\n\nBring your ticket for the Post Museum and Mail Rail ride if you have one: if you don’t\, you can pay on the door for the museum\, though the Mail Rail ride\, which is just one part of the visit\, is fully booked.

SUMMARY:Geeks' Transport Tour of London
DESCRIPTION:The day is an excuse to ride on trains\, a tram\, buses\, a ship\, a cable car\, a light railway\, an underground railway and your own legs. \nThe adventure starts the moment the tram pulls away from Croydon. You will visit (either from distance or up close) some interesting and rarely visited parts of London such as: \nThe lesser visited borderlands of Croydon – Lower Sydenham\, Ladywell and the truly foreign territory of Lewisham interchange station. \nHistoric and modern Woolwich: Royal Arsenal Woolwich Riverside – one of London’s “most exciting redevelopment sites” enabled by Crossrail\, the station site of which we will see. See how the Georgian buildings are being transformed into a new residential quarter of SE London. Brunch possible in a quaint pub. \nA short and free cruise on the River Thames in a traditional Woolwich ferry. \nSee how Crossrail is forging a new transport route through Docklands. \nLike a bird\, peer down at London City Airport. \nTake to the air in the Emirates Air Line (Cable Car) – £3.50 on an Oyster card or suitable discount / £4.00 full fare single… (Fear of heights could be a challenge.) \nThe Aquatic Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park\, Stratford \nIf we’re lucky a ride on the new Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) rolling stock in service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield in readiness for Crossrail’s initial partial opening in December. \nRide on a hydrogen powered bus and take in Tower Bridge and some secrets sights south of the river to cross Waterloo Bridge and end at Covent Garden (call in London’s Transport Museum café / shop or retire to a pub). \nEpilogue – possible passage through the new “Bermondsey dive under” by train on way back to Croydon from the newly enlarged London Bridge. \nMeet at East Croydon at 10.10am to catch the 10.19am tram to Elmers End or board at Addiscombe / meet at Elmers End at 10.35 etc. \nTickets – you will need a ticket(s) / card (s) that will enable you to travel from Croydon on buses\, the underground\, Docklands Light Railway\, national rail and tram. The Emirates Air Line (cable car at North Greenwich) is £3.50 / £4.00 extra which you pay by touching in or buying an additional ticket at the facility. \nRefreshments – there will be a number of cafes with toilets on route and also public spaces where you can eat your own packed lunch / food. Toilets at a few places. There will be an opportunity for brunch / morning coffee at Woolwich with toilet stop. I plan to end the day at a pub in Covent Garden where hot food may be obtained.
