SUMMARY:Geeks Transport Tour of London
DESCRIPTION:Join other transport geeks\, enthusiasts and day trippers for a ride on and visit to some of London’s newest transport infrastructure and trains\, with an emphasis on the East.   Naturally transport providers have thwarted some best laid plans through timetable changes and bus replacement.  So unfortunately we won’t be travelling on the shortest rail service in the UK (Upminster to Romford) or travelling direct from Liverpool Street to Barking. \nAssemble 10.30am sharp at East Croydon station ticket hall ready for a 10.42 train to London Bridge.  You are responsible for buying suitable ticket.  Contactless or Oyster  card would be the best. \nIn spite of the disappointment of not visiting Upminster\, we will pass through some lesser used stations (as far as Croydonians are concerned) such as Canon Street and Fenchurch Street.  We will see evidence of multimillion\, ongoing capacity upgrade at Bank station\, travel on two brand new lines including gawping at the River Thames from the upcoming Barking Riverside development and its new station and take a convoluted route (via Wanstead Park / Forest Gate (Elizabeth Line)) to Romford to see what’s there (the Croydon of East London?).  After all that\, we will probably want to rush back to the more familiar central London. \nAt this stage / afternoon there may be other places to go\, trains to see that I have not thought of – do contribute ideas. \nPubs around Covent Garden will be busy with weekend and theatre custom (in fact desired pub is booked out till May) so I plan a conclusion at The Castle\, Farringdon from where people can find their Thameslink way home when they please (“London Terminals” national rail ticket / season is not valid at Farringdon\, so contactless and Oyster is best).   Those who wish may like to have a late afternoon / early evening meal there and if that is the case let me know by Wednesday 15 February so I can try and secure a table(s).

Each checkpoint will involve a short challenge – a good fun day out for all.\nThe Start and Finish\n \nWoldingham Village Hall\, Station Road\, Woldingham\, Surrey\, CR3 7EU. \nOS MAP Explorer 146 – TQ 371 557. \nDistance approximately 20 miles. \nHall opens at 9.30am.  Teams dispatched from 10.00am. \nThe Cost \n£7.00 in advance and £9.00 for those who enter on the day (discounts for under 16s) \nAll ages are welcome – families and individuals. However\, you must enter in teams of between two and four people and at least one person in each team must be 16+. It is not a race and teams will leave at staggered intervals\, in order of solving of a Route Quiz. A trophy will be presented to the team gaining the most quiz points and there will be certificates for all finishers. DESCRIPTION:We will explore the social and religious history\, architecture\, religions\, famous people associated with the area eg Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle\, Pissarro and Shirley Bassey\, and it’s industrial past. \n\nThe tour will start and end at Norwood Junction station. We will aim to depart at 2.30 pm. There is a train from East Croydon at 2.15 and one from West Croydon at 2.16.\n\nWe will have a park stop if you want to bring your own refreshments but we pass some cafes also and my house for toilet breaks! My thinking is we will finish c 5pm then for those who want to stay around afterwards to stay for drinks and food there are a few nice choices. It would be useful to have some idea as to numbers. If there is time and weather permitting\, we could take a walk through Castle Wood and Oxleas Wood\, both of which have nature trails. \nIf you are going by train\, meet at East Croydon 10.00 am for the 10.14 am train to Blackheath. You need to change at Peckham Rye. At Blackheath catch the 89 bus to stop SE Memorial Hospital. Then walk to the castle.

SUMMARY:Beatles Themed Walk
DESCRIPTION:The walk starts where they really started in 1962 ie the Abbey Road Studios near St Johns Wood tube station and end where they last performed in 1969 on the roof of the Apple HQ which is near Piccadilly Circus.\n\n\nIn between we’ll visit places where they lived\, worked  and played in the Swinging Sixties – oh and where some of them got arrested!\n\n\nThe walk will last approximately 3 hours including a coffee/toilet break at the cafe on Marylebone station where the Fab Four took a break while filming a Hard Days Night in 1964.\n\n\nFollowed by a a picnic lunch in St James Park (weather permitted).\n\n\nMeet at East Croydon station at 10.30 with view to catching the 10.41 to Victoria and from there we will proceed by tube to St Johns Wood probably changing at Green Park.

DESCRIPTION:A Walking Rally with a Difference\nA 10 mile Treasure Hunt\nSolve the Clues \nFind the Checkpoints\nTest your Map Reading Skills\nChallenges at Checkpoints \nThe Date and Time: Sunday 28th April 2019\nTHE EVENT: The walk is usually about 10 miles. You will need to solve clues to find each checkpoint and your map and compass skills will also be put to the test. Points are awarded for completing quizzes and games\, at the checkpoints. A trophy is awarded to the winning team. \nTHE TEAMS: You will need to enter in teams of between 2 and 5 people. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Neasden – by bike and on foot. \n  \nCyclists take the train to Victoria and ride up through North West London to the temple\, mainly along canal side paths. \n  \nOthers can walk there from Willesden Junction\, and we can all meet up there. 30 minute train to Willesden Junction and 30 minute walk to temple. \n  \nFollowed by optional walk/ ride through to “Welsh Harp” reservoir and home from Hendon on Thameslink\, or earlier transport links back to Croydon avoiding 1 hour walk after temple trip.
