SUMMARY:Trip to Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Update 29th May\nNearly time to go! We currently have 14 intrepid travellers who have booked travel and accommodation. Some are going by train\, some flying from either Gatwick or London City\, and several different places to stay have been booked. \nYou can join us right up to the last minute if you can get the bookings – let me know if you have a sudden craving for currywurst in its native habitat and I can let you know everybody’s plans. \nKen \n\nHere’s a date for your diary: \nWe’re going to Berlin!\nIreen and I are going for a week\, travelling out on Thursday 6th June and back on Thursday 13th. Please join us for all or part of that time. \nWhy Berlin?\nBerlin is a fascinating city and well worth your time. There’s plenty to see and do – historic sites\, museums\, art galleries\, boat trips\, and\, of course\, tremendous nightlife for us youngsters. Not to mention the currywurst. Public transport is excellent and cheap\, though it’s also very walkable and even cyclable\, being mostly flat. \nThere will be a mixture of group\, small group and individual activities\, to be driven by the interests of those going. \nTravel\nAt this point the only arrangement made is our travel. We’re going by train\, which turns out to be one of the more expensive options – Eurostar St Pancras-Brussels\, then Brussels-Cologne-Berlin. Other travel options include bus and plane –  a good reference for travel options is Rome2Rio. As far as my research goes\, weekend travel is the most expensive\, while Thursday less so. \nAccommodation\nTo be arranged. \nIreen and I have made our own arrangements\, with my sister who lives there – very centrally\, near the Cathedral. For the rest of you\, there are many hostels to choose from\, and of course hotels\, AirBnB etc to consider. \nWhat Now?\nPlease let me know if you’re interested in this trip so we can gauge the demand for accommodation etc. More plans will be made! \n  \nKen

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Brighton
DESCRIPTION:During May Brighton is bursting with life thanks to the Brighton Festival https://brightonfestival.org/ and Brighton Fringe https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/? \n\nIf you are up for a loosely organised amble around the town and some of its FREE performing arts events and laines and beachfront bars\, please come along.   Timings below. \n\nThere is also a ticketed event in the fringe that I think would appeal and is at a sensible time: https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/the-flying-bubble-show/  The Flying Bubble Show.  And for which tickets  are available.  “Dive into The Flying Bubble Show\, where dreams and reality blur in a breathtaking fusion of bubble magic and aerial flying.”  1pm;  standard ticket £14  concession £12.   Please buy your own ticket.   Or if you’d like me to book for you\, let me know.   I have booked myself a ticket.  \n  \nRough plan for the day: \n\nMeet East Croydon 9.45am / buy rail tickets (Thameslink day return £15.50 before concessions) \n09.59 Train to Brighton \n10.48 Train arrives Brighton \n11am to 12.30pm amble through North Laine area with its quirky shops and cafes \n12.45 arrive at Fool’s Paradise\, venue for\, at 1.00pm\, The Flying Bubble Show\, see above \n2.00pm  exit show and find lunch \n3.00pm to 6.00pm amble beachfront and multiple FREE performance events (e.g. World Kiosk\, Anchored in Air *\, The Journey\, Neolithic Cannibals: Deep Listening to the Unheard\, Days of Wonder\, Ooze Machines ) \n\n* For “Anchored in Air” the one show is at 2.30pm so we would have to work out where that venue is and hot foot it. \n\nThen around 6.00pm we should have easy / takeaway food (e.g. fish and chips) and find somewhere to collapse for a drink – beachfront bar maybe.   Possibly a restaurant but that would be a major challenge to accommodate a group during a festival Saturday? \n\nThen around 8.00pm\, unless we have found another event to attend I think we will be happy to set off back home. \n\nBy all means explore the festival and fringe programme and suggest events we could go to. \nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Isle of Dogs Walk
DESCRIPTION:Here is the Itinerary for the Sunday 17th March Isle of Dogs Walk.\nMeet at East Croydon Station at 9.40am to catch the 9.51 platform 2 to London Bridge.\nLondon Bridge train to Greenwich leaves at 10.16 from platform 4. Arrives Greenwich 10.27. \nFrom Greenwich Station we do a short walk to The Gate Clock (Wetherspoons) pub (Creek Rd next to Cutty Sark DLR stn) for a coffee and toilet break.\n(The reason is that unfortunately there is no cafe on the walk\, but there are toilets) \nThe walk begins at 11.00am at the Greenwich foot Tunnel south (Greenwich) entrance.\nWe expect the walk to conclude at the Ledger House (Wetherspoons) pub on West India Dock Quay around 3.30pm.\nTheir usual reasonably priced menu is available\, but there are plenty of other eating places in the vicinity if you want to pay more.\nThe timings will enable those who want to\, to get back to Croydon and attend the St Patrick’s Day event at Ruskin House in the evening. \nThere are several options for returning back to East Croydon:\n1. Elizabeth Line Canary Wharf to Farringdon station and then direct rail to East Croydon. (my choice)\n2. DLR West India Quay to Shadwell and Overground to West Croydon Station.\n3. Jubilee Line Canary Wharf to Canada Water and Overground to West Croydon Station.\n4. Jubilee Line Canary Wharf to London Bridge and train to East Croydon.\n5.  DLR West India Quay to Lewisham and no75 bus to Croydon.

SUMMARY:Nordic Tour - Spring 2020 - Saturday 2 May - Sunday 10 May 2020 - Copenhagen\, Stockholm and Helsinki
DESCRIPTION:The plan is to spent a week in the “Norden” countries of Denmark\, Sweden and Finland. Fly to Copenhagen. Travel over land and sea to Helsinki via Stockholm. Fly home. \nIn May there is around 17 hours of daylight as it is proper “up North”. \nAt this point\, please let me know if you are interested and want to consider it\, really keen and definitely coming\, and any special wishes and ideas. Once we have this indicative poll we can press on with the details. \nWhen I looked into this recently I was encouraged to find the travel costs look like something not far over £100\, which is amazing. Of course actual costs will vary\, but so far so good. Many other costs to consider\, rooms\, food\, drinks and more. \nCurrently this is a proposal for a potential trip\, depending on take up from Copsers\, and other factors currently outside of our control. \nThe overall time-line is to confirm who wants to come\, fix the flight dates\, make advanced flight bookings\, by the end of this year. Then in 2020 we can work out the details of surface connections\, accommodation\, fun\, etc. Many legs have a 3 month booking window\, making it around March to finalise. \nIf you leave it later\, beware that the travel costs and options may become dearer and more limited\, but in fact\, there would be nothing to stop people tagging on later\, and taking it as it comes\, but best to book early to avoid disappointment. Ideally we block book best value and options on accommodation and advance tickets in good time. \nThe trip is planned during the week of the “early spring bank holiday”=”Labour Day”=”VE Day 2020” giving potentially 9 days away with 4 “work” days off. \nFly to Copenhagen\, metro train to Malmo\, onwards by express train to Stockholm\, ferry over the gulf of Finland to Turku\, Finland\, bus to Helsinki\, fly home from Helsinki. Phew. \nCurrently travel costs are encouraging\, and could vary as we progress. Hostel dorm\, etc accommodation around 20-30Euro/Night. Would need a fair amount of notice to plan up and book up. One or two nights in each city\, with potential stops en route too. Could end up with 6-8 nights at £25 a night making accommodation look like somewhere around £150-200 \n4 days on the move London-Copenhagen\, Copen-Stockholm\, Stockholm-Finland (quite a long crossing\, ~11 hours)\, Fly home from Helsinki\, leaving maybe 3 or 4 days not travelling\, 1 day in Copen\, 1 day in Stockholm\, one day in Helsinki\, maybe one extra day en route to make 8. \nTravel light with a rucksack or suffer lugging pain with a bulky suitcase\, etc. The weather should be mainly warm\, or at least “not too cold” and dry\, or dry-ish. 17C day and 7C night. 6 rainy days in the month. \nPossibly we can get an overnight cabin crossing from Stockholm to Finland\, it’s around 11 hours. \nTo encourage participation\, and spread the load\, I would like to get 3 volunteer “city planners” who make a plan for each of our 3 city stops\, working out the accommodation\, sights\, entertainment\, fun\, food and more. The members of the party could then give inputs to the appropriate planner. “I wanna see the mermaid in Copenhagen” “Let’s go to the sauna in Stockholm” “How about this great bar in Helsinki” “Lib wants to relive the Scandi-Noir experience on the famous Bridge to Malmo” etc. We can work this out as we go. If you fancy volunteering please let me know your city of choice. \nCurrently\, you can book a flight to Copenhagen from Gatwick for £37. Should remain static for some time\, ideally we get booked up sooner on the flights to avoid higher prices that normally ramp up nearer the date. Other transport and accommodation needs advance booking later. I will work out the booking windows for other legs. \nTrains depart from København H (Copenhagen Central Station) every 20 minutes travel time 35 minutes to the centre of Malmö\, £16 \nTrain from Malmo to Stockholm 315SEK ~ £25 \nBoat from Stockholm to Turku – variable – finding 7.50Euro day time 15Euro overnight\, overnight saving one night room cost on land\, standard 4 berth cabins\, upgrade for more privacy – beware captive market for drinks and food en route. (These ferries are duty free booze cruises\, but it does add up) \nBus from Turku to Helsinki 10 Euro – pay on board with card. Potential overnight stop in Turku for “redneck Finland experience” \nFly from Helsinki to Croydon Airport (Gatwick) £41 \nHostel Dorms Copenhagen = ~ £30 a night. Stockholm £20 a night. Helsinki £30 a night. Rural house airbnb in Sweden 8 guests\, £120 a night £15 per head per night. Proper adventure ! \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_countries \nWe get Scandinavian\, Nordic and Baltic\, all in one week ! \n  \nLINK – https://photos.app.goo.gl/noo2zAEKuTF8MCCt6 \n
