DESCRIPTION:For those interested in my “three part” COPSE walk next sunday (27th)\, this\nis the plan =>\n\nWhere to meet\nMeet at the 468 bus stop “KD” from 10.15am  outside the “former” Nestle building => 10.30am bus (approx) to\nWest Norwood high street (takes about 30 minutes) where we’ll then have a coffee/loo stop in West Norwood’s library + “picture house” cinema.\n\nThe walk\nThis leisurely four mike walk will then start outside West Norwood cemetery’s main entrance at 11.30am to find some of it’s many famous graves (including “a sugar magnate + philanthropist”\,\na “domestic goddess” + many more)\, Dulwich village + Crystal Palace park (including the recently refurbished “dinosaurs ”   .)\n\nWe’ll leave by the bottom Penge gate  + then go to either Penge East Station \, Penge West Station or buses to Croydon but there’s an option afterwards to go to “the Bridge House” pub which\nis right next to Penge West Station for drinks + possibly a  meal but being a Sunday afternoon\, it could be busy\, so we’ll just hope there’s some indoor seats left or go into the garden.\n\nIf you have any queries\, please let me know.\n\nKeith S\nmobile/text = 07749 515489\n(which is always switched on !!)\n\n(Alternative travel via train (East Croydon at 14mins  and 44 mins past the hour to West Norwood\, change at Crystal Palace).  Journey takes approx 19 mins.\nYou can also travel from West Croydon train station to West Norwood changing at Balham. SUMMARY:London Loop - Hornchurch Country Park to Purfleet\, via Rainham.
DESCRIPTION:Time to pick-up from where we left off back in May! as we continue this 150 mile odyssey around the outskirts of London through parks\, woods\, suburbs and along rivers. It’s never too late to join…but you’d better hurry up (see later!)\n\nWe go from Hornchurch Country Park Discovery Centre/Cafe to Purfleet – about 8 miles or so\, including a Hill with a View. A chance to drop out at Rainham (Essex). Terrain otherwise is reasonably flat.\n\nIncludes an optional visit to Rainham Hall\, £6.50/(children £3.25)  (National Trust members free)\nOR you can\, I believe\, use their cafe without visiting the property.\n\nThen it’s down along the Thames (not the actual Thames Path which is on the south bank) with a little military and heritage museum (free)\, which may be open\, along the way\, and a cafe at the RSPB reserve Visitor Centre outside Purfleet. Pubs in Rainham and\, I believe\, at the end.\n\nOh dear\, this is\, again I believe (but one can never be absolutely sure!) the end of this ‘running’ of the LOOP\, as we have come all the way around from Erith on the south bank of the Thames since early 2023. It’s probably time to give it a rest for the next period of years\, and go and walk the Great Wall of China\, or something…\n\nBUT BUT BUT if anyone has missed a section and wants to walk it privately\, or with COPSE (either on the programme or ad hoc when there is a gap in the programme) then of course they can do so\, either with or without me! (but I can be an advisor). I leave that hanging in the air…\n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, meet at East Croydon Rail Stn at 9.00am BST (a bit of an early start  – particularly by GMT – but probably worth it for a relaxed day in the end).\n\nWe catch a Thameslink to London Bridge (15 or 21 past the hour would be good)\, Jubilee Line to West Ham\, District Line to Hornchurch Metro\,\nthen a 252 bus to Hornchurch CP (every 10-12 mins\, takes a few minutes).\n\nWe travel mostly in zone 6…but for the journey home from Purfleet this station is in a bit of a grey area as regards TFL zones BUT you CAN use Oyster pay-as-you-go from here back into London. So I’ll leave you to inquire about how this affects your ticket. Rainham (Essex) is the next station stop towards London and IS in Zone 6\, but\, of course\, we stay on the train (so this is to bear in mind if you need to touch with an Oyster card…this is far less complicated than it may sound\, it’ll all fall into place on the day!!).\n\nPaul N (no emails on the day please)\nTel. 07968 223589

DESCRIPTION:Both walkers and cyclists will start by meeting near the War Memorial\, outside Croydon Central Library on Katharine Street. \nMeet from 2pm for departure at 2.10pm \nWalkers will enjoy a suburban ramble\, taking in the last day of the “Art Trail” around Croydon. The route passes some interesting places and takes us through a public park.  (Boots not needed\, just comfy walking shoes + an en route drinks bottle.) \nCyclists will enjoy a relaxed ride that takes in Croydon’s outer areas of parkland\, ponds and open views across some downs. (There will be a rest / refreshment stop but bring en route drinks.) \nAbout 5pm\, both walkers and cyclists will meet again when they finish\, just inside South Croydon\, for free coffees / teas and cake! \n

DESCRIPTION:Some of us have already been to this interesting museum\, packed full of the stories behind the culture of London’s Cockneys and there is now the chance for a further group of us to visit.  Some of us shall be going for a second time!  There is a very extensive display of photographs and information to view – and those COPSErs not Londoners might be learning of this tradition for the first time\, so do come along! \nThe museum was set up by George\, Pearly King of Peckham\, and we enjoyed his evening with us at our hall last month. \nI have booked this Saturday’s group visit to the museum for 1pm.  Meet just inside East Croydon station at 12.10am for the 12.19 train to Stoneleigh\, via Clapham Junction.  Museum entry is £8 but £5 for seniors.  This time we shall not have a booked lunch at the museum but\, afterwards\, we can adjourn to “The Station” pub\, for drinks and meal options before our return to Croydon. \nI am collecting names for the group booking so please let me know a.s.a.p.\, if you would like to be included. \n  \nRegards\, \n  \nIreen Best (07968 035522) \n

DESCRIPTION:This is an Associate Members weekend\, now open to regular members. \nAccomodation has been booked at Kirkby Stephen hostel\, a former chapel in West Yorkshire. It is convenient to all facilities in this lovely old town\, It is a good centre for a range of walks of all abilities. DESCRIPTION:The circular walk begins from Berwick Station at 10.25 am \nGETTING HERE \nThere is a train departing East Croydon at 09.10 and arriving at Lewes at 09.56 \nThen take the train from Lewes at 10.14 to arrive at Berwick at 10.25 \nI will catch the train from Lewes to Berwick. \nThere is a car park at Berwick Station for those who wish to drive  Maybe advisable to prebook in advance to secure a space – £4.60 for the day.   Parking in Berwick Station Parking | Prebook Online | APCOA | APCOA \nThe walk is a fairly easy 7 and half mile walk in beautiful countryside but does have STILES.    As I propose to do half the route (the Western/central churches)\, we should have plenty of time either in churches (there is a Pilgrim table and stamp in each) or a nearby pub (you get to choose) and then regroup to continue. \nWe will have visited 4 churches/pubs in this walk and I can do another walk to see the others later on in the year   The longest stop should be at Alfriston as there are so many choices.  There are 3 really old 16 th century Inns\, lots of cosy tea shops\, a large church\, small museum or if you want to increase mileage can set off on the riverside walk (being mindful of time we need to regroup).   At the end of the walk there is a lovely inn right by Berwick station where\, if you wish\, ( or have time waiting for train)\, we can stop for a drink and maybe try for a bite to eat. \nCuckmere Pilgrim Path \nHope this all makes sense and please contact me if there are any problems. DESCRIPTION:Here are some details of the open air theatre trip programmed for Thursday 31 July. \nTheatre Workshop Coulsdon’s annual show at Coulsdon Manor this year is and adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. It’s a lovely venue – in a wooded glade on the golf course of Coulsdon Manor. But 466 runs by. YOU NEED TO BRING A CHAIR. Parking is possible. \nThe show is 7.45pm. Tickets £12. They usually provide pizza in the interval if booked on arrival (extra cost). I will check this is happening. There is also a small bar. We would be able to travel together from East Croydon bus station (or stops south of). YOU NEED TO BRING A CHAIR. People usually bring a camping chair. COPSE has a couple you could borrow for a token rent. You would have to take them after the Club night by 29th July and carry them. It is approx. 500m walk from the bus stop to the venue. \nI suggest you get your own ticket but if this proves difficult speak to me.
