SUMMARY:Green North Croydon Walk
DESCRIPTION:Keith says:\nThis is almost a repeat of my walk on Sunday January 7th\, where\, after a meal at “The Bull” pub\, a few of us went to the nearby leisure centre + watched the Streatham Redhawks ice hockey match ⛸ 🏒  🥅. \nAs I don’t want to finish too late\, we’ll be meeting much earlier at 7PM outside Thornton Heath Station (which you can get to by train from either East or West Croydon + various buses from Croydon) where the four mile “easy” walk will be as follows => \nThornton Heath Station \nThornton heath recreation ground\, \nNorbury Hall (or Squirrel 🐿) Park \nNorbury Park \nNorwood Grove \n“The Rookery” gardens 🌹🌻  🌳🌲 \nStreatham Common to Streatham High Road\, where the walk will finish about 9pm. \nThere will be an option of either going to “The Rabbit Hole” or “The Bull” pub for drinks  🍺🍷🍵\,  where opposite you can easily get the 109 bus back to central Croydon or go by train from either Streatham Station or Streatham Common Station.

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Brighton
DESCRIPTION:During May Brighton is bursting with life thanks to the Brighton Festival https://brightonfestival.org/ and Brighton Fringe https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/? \n\nIf you are up for a loosely organised amble around the town and some of its FREE performing arts events and laines and beachfront bars\, please come along.   Timings below. \n\nThere is also a ticketed event in the fringe that I think would appeal and is at a sensible time: https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/the-flying-bubble-show/  The Flying Bubble Show.  And for which tickets  are available.  “Dive into The Flying Bubble Show\, where dreams and reality blur in a breathtaking fusion of bubble magic and aerial flying.”  1pm;  standard ticket £14  concession £12.   Please buy your own ticket.   Or if you’d like me to book for you\, let me know.   I have booked myself a ticket.  \n  \nRough plan for the day: \n\nMeet East Croydon 9.45am / buy rail tickets (Thameslink day return £15.50 before concessions) \n09.59 Train to Brighton \n10.48 Train arrives Brighton \n11am to 12.30pm amble through North Laine area with its quirky shops and cafes \n12.45 arrive at Fool’s Paradise\, venue for\, at 1.00pm\, The Flying Bubble Show\, see above \n2.00pm  exit show and find lunch \n3.00pm to 6.00pm amble beachfront and multiple FREE performance events (e.g. World Kiosk\, Anchored in Air *\, The Journey\, Neolithic Cannibals: Deep Listening to the Unheard\, Days of Wonder\, Ooze Machines ) \n\n* For “Anchored in Air” the one show is at 2.30pm so we would have to work out where that venue is and hot foot it. \n\nThen around 6.00pm we should have easy / takeaway food (e.g. fish and chips) and find somewhere to collapse for a drink – beachfront bar maybe.   Possibly a restaurant but that would be a major challenge to accommodate a group during a festival Saturday? \n\nThen around 8.00pm\, unless we have found another event to attend I think we will be happy to set off back home. \n\nBy all means explore the festival and fringe programme and suggest events we could go to. \nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Visit to the Royal Institution
DESCRIPTION:A London walk  to the Royal Institution (free entry)\, and other mystery places of interest\, including a free visit to the Collection Gallery at the Royal Academy of Arts. Julie and myself will be co-leading the walk. \nThe Royal Institution of Great Britain (often the Royal Institution\, abbreviated Ri or RI) is an organisation for scientific education and research. Throughout its history\, the Institution has supported public engagement with science through a programme of lectures\, many of which continue today. The most famous of these are the annual Royal Institution Christmas Lectures\, founded by Michael Faraday in 1825\, which are televised every year on the BBC. You will also be able to see the actual laboratory where Michael Faraday made some of his fundamental discoveries and you will also get to visit a museum in the RI\, showing various discoveries made there. \nWe will be meeting at East Croydon station 9.30 am\, hoping to catch the 9.45 am train Plat 4\, to Victoria station. We will be walking from Victoria to the Royal Institution near Green Park. There are toilets at Victoria station and at our destinations. I suggest you bring refreshments\, in which you can have the opportunity to have them in the seating area of the courtyard at the Royal Academy of Arts. There are also cafes inside the Royal Institution and the Royal Academy of Arts. After\, we are planning to walk around St James’ Park and then walk back to Victoria\, and find a pub there in Victoria. \nAny questions\, please do not hesitate to email me. \nKind regards\, \nMaria

SUMMARY:Lake District 5 nights @ Elterwater Hostel
DESCRIPTION:I’m organising a trip to Elterwater Hostel (formerly a YHA hostel\, now independent) in the Lake District in April. I’m planning on staying for 5 nights so as to have 4 whole days up there. Obviously the idea is to get on to them there hills. The Old Man of Coniston (which I haven’t climbed for over 30 years) is nearby\, so it’s a chance for some old men (and women) to climb the Old Man! Maybe also Helvetian. The hostel\, being an ex YH\, is a lovely old building with 6 bedded rooms (about £30 pppn) and twin rooms (about £40 pppn) in a small village with a choice of pubs. \nYou can go by train to Windermere\, then by bus. Car Lifts Full.

DESCRIPTION:DON’T FORGET IT’S ON SAT\, SAT\, SATURDAY!\n(ON SUNDAY MORNING YOU CAN HAVE A LIE-IN  WATCHING ALAN TITCHMARSH & MICHAEL PORTILLO ON THE TELLY!) \nAlso a little note to those who have walked this before\, a new route in this part is being used which for about two thirds is completely different! \nSo yes\, Saturday April 6th\, 2024 for Part Five of this route\, picking up from last Spring at Crawley Down\, Sussex (nothing to do with Crawley) to Ardingly village\, a distance of around ten miles of fairly gently undulating topography\,  but likely with plenty of mud as it’s done nothing but RAIN for the last goodness knows how long a time!! Despite what it may say in certain sources\, this is not a 9-5pm day (as in the song!) – don’t expect to be back in Croydon until after 7pm (unless you leave early\, which is an option – see below). \nBy-the-by\, the Industrial In-Action on the railways this long weekend is not due to disrupt the plans at all. As just mentioned you can leave (or join?) at West Hoathly around lunch time or later (on a Metrobus 84) if you have had enough\, or want to explore this village more (there’s an open garden here – the Priest’s House – which some of you have probably visited\, but we probably won’t plan to visit as it costs money to enter and needs time to go round\, so you may want to return privately for this). \nBring along usual food and drink supplies. There is a pot selling place with a cafe along the way\, which we could use if making good time\, but the main stop is West Hoathly village with its Pub\, and churchyard for sandwich eaters. Also a pub at Ardingly in case we have time before the bus. \nAnd the bit you’ve been waiting for\, the Travel stuff! \nMeet at East Croydon Railway Station by 9.30am ‘clock-time’ (and you know why I say that! it’s that crazy time of the year again!) to catch the 9.49am train to Three Bridges (one a little while later too in case this one messes up). From there\, on the opposite side of the road from the station’s main entrance\, we catch one of three different Metrobus services (281 at 10.36\, 272 at 10.46 or 291 at 11.06am…earlier the better) to Crawley Down WAR MEMORIAL stop. \nReturning we catch the Metrobus 272 bus from Ardingly at 6.11pm to Three Bridges where we jump on a train for East Croydon (there is an earlier 272 bus at 5.45pm that goes to Haywards Heath Rail Stn\, and you’d need to pay the extra on the train). \nPaul\, 07968 223589. \n  \nHave I missed anything…probably – ask me anything! Will further check the travel situation as the week wears on\, but the timetables I’ve seen allow for the industrial in-action. \n

SUMMARY:Easter Monday Walk
DESCRIPTION:I will lead a seven mile circular walk from Biggin Hill on Easter Monday 1st April. It could be completed in about four hours at a moderate pace including a short stop but we would have up to five hours before catching a return bus at 15:34. It is a bit muddy in places but is mostly ok. There are only a couple of moderate hills. There is only one pub on the route but it is less than an hour from the start so bring adequate food and drink. Refreshments are available in Biggin Hill. \nMeet at East Croydon bus station stop E1 by 09:25 to catch the Superloop bus SL5 from stop E1 to Bromley South at 09:33. That is the advertised time but in any case we get the first bus after 09:30. The bus will stop at Elmfield Road which is one stop after Bromley South station because at the moment that stop is closed. We then walk down the High Street to bus stop Z to catch the 320 bus at 10:11 to Biggin Hill\, Lebanon Gardens. The walk starts from Church Road which is next to the swimming pool and library. If anyone wants to drive to Biggin Hill there is a free car park next to the recreation ground. You turn into Church Road from Main Road and the entrance is shortly on the left by a large sign saying ‘Biggin Hill Clinic’. Let me know if you want us to meet you in the car park. Return is 320 bus from stop W at 15:34 (or other time as appropriate) to Bromley South then SL5 to East Croydon. \nBob. \ntel 07982 841121

SUMMARY:Countryside Walk - 7ish miles
DESCRIPTION:Here are details of my countryside walk on Sunday 10 March 2024.  Approx 7 miles (ok maybe 8).  An early (for some) start: \n\nMeet at East Croydon train station ticket hall at 9.15am.  (This will delight Barry.) \n\nWe catch the 9.31am train to Chipstead.   We return later in the day from somewhere further down that line\, sorry not sure which station yet\, so if you don’t want to use Oyster / contactless\, suggest buy a return to Tattenham Corner.   Or if you prefer\, buy a return to Chipstead and a single for the rest at the relevant station later.   (The whole line is in Oyster zone 6.) \n\nWe will walk via the outstanding landscape around Chipstead\, Mugswell\, Colley Hill\, Walton Heath etc.   Do bring some packed refreshments and drink with you as there is no planned indoor lunch stop.  However I will try to include a café and or the Sportsman pub at Mogador – but doubtful there will be room or time to sit and have a proper meal.   We will likely reach our destination and return station around 3.30pm where there may be an opportunity for a more leisurely pub stop.  But don’t bank on it. \n\nSorry if details are a bit sketchy\, left it a bit late to check and my first choice has been thwarted by a rail replacement bus between Purley and Redhill.   That does not impact Tattenham Corner line. \n\nWear boots or wellies in expectation of mud. \n\nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Brutalist Architecture Walk
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon walk finishing with an option for an early evening pizza near Norwood Junction station. \nMeet at East Croydon station at 2pm. \nThe title of the walk\, as put forward to the Copse November planning meeting\, is “The brutalist architecture of Croydon and South Norwood”. I got the idea from an event at Bookseller Crow entitled “Concretopia: a brutal decade” a talk by Croydon author John Grinrod which was attended by Val\, Alan and myself. This was supplemented by the “Little Manhattan” audio tour supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and more recently by Elain Harwood’s “Brutalist Britain” which includes buildings in Croydon and South Norwood. \nMost of the buildings we will visit will be in central Croydon so we will leave from outside East Croydon station at 2pm. If anyone is running late (hopefully not!) my number is 07931 533785. Due to weekend engineering works we will later take one of the several buses that run between Croydon and South Norwood to see the last few buildings on my tour there. I plan to end the tour at the Shelverdine Goathouse pub (7-8 High Street\, South Norwood SE25 6EP) for drinks and then to order in takeaways to the pub (they don’t charge for this) from local eateries of your choice eg pizza\, Chinese\, Thai should wish to stay for something to eat. \nFOR THOSE WISHING TO STAY FOR OR JUST COME TO THE GOATHOUSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP SO I CAN ENSURE WE HAVE SUFFICIENT SEATING  \nThank you and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday \nJulie \n

SUMMARY:Geeks' Transport Tour
DESCRIPTION:Here is some information about next Saturday’s Geeks’ Transport Tour (of part of London) 2024.  This is a day for riding and observing London’s very new and established transport infrastructure with a bit of sight seeing on the way.  This year I have some new features on the London’s transport network for you to experience and a glimpse at the bright new future of high speed rail.   We will be going West and North West. \nMeet in East Croydon station main ticket hall at 10.15am on Sat 24 February.  \nIf you are already “rail side” go to platform 1.   I plan to catch the 10.28 train to Victoria (but alighting at Clapham Junction). \nWe will venture as far as zone 5 on the other side of London using National Rail\, London Overground\, London Underground\, TfL buses including Superloop plus shanks’s pony – in other words WALKING.   Say\, up to a mile in one go and lesser distances here and there\, almost entirely on “made” footpaths but there’s an optional short stretch of unmade / leaf mouldy / bit of mud path.  So decent walking footwear is good. \nAn oyster card or contactless payment card will be the ideal “ticket to ride”.   Just as a London freedom pass or such like is ideal for those that have them.  A reminder that TfL caps your daily fare so  you don’t pay than you should. \nOut tour will take in the biggest single construction site in London (for HS2 “terminus” at Old Oak Common); a land mark church on a hill (optional); coffee break; lunch break; some television heritage; a reservoir; more than one new / up and coming “quarters”; a new Superloop bus service; passing unusual religious buildings and numerous trains and stations.  Oh and a brand new mainline railway station.  Blimey that sounds vaguely interesting.  But it is “geeky”.  Nevertheless participants of tours in recent years have spoken highly of them! \nBring a curious outlook and a bit of patience. \n  \nAndrew Thynne \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Walk in Epping Forest
DESCRIPTION:Epping Forest is a large wooded area in NE London\, with plenty of fairly easy walking. \nSo meet at E. Croydon station at 9.20 for the 9.33 train to London Bridge. Then by 149 bus to Liverpool Street station for the Overground to Chingford. (Zone 5) \nFrom there it is a short walk to the ancient Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge\, visitor centre and cafe. Then it will be about a 7 mile circular walk via High Beech (another visitor centre\, cafe\, pub) back to Chingford. \nIt could be quite muddy in places\, so boots may be best. Also bring your own lunch if you don’t want to rely on the cafes etc. \nHope to see you there\, \nBarry \n–

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys - Stroll 2*
DESCRIPTION:We all enjoyed the Pepys Walk on 10th December\, so here’s the second instalment.\nWhere?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time around the streets of the City of London. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.03 East Croydon Platform 2 to Blackfriars\, exiting on the North side\, where the walk starts \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nOutside Blackfrairs Underground  station from our scheduled arrival time about 12.30\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/crazy.ripe.good\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n*I know\, this was originally advertised as a Country Walk. Humble apologies. \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. You can use the links to find any 3-metre square on earth. For best results\, download the App.

SUMMARY:continuing with the London LOOP . . .
DESCRIPTION:Continue from Coulsdon around to Oaks Park\, onward to cross the ‘mad mile’ at Banstead Downs\, and then towards Nonsuch Park & site of Nonsuch Palace\, and possibly as far as Ewell. Potentially as much as 8 miles or so\, with some mud and some suburban pavements. Refreshment possibilities in Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park\, Nonsuch Park\, and perhaps other unexpected places. A chance to leave at Clockhouse (bus)\, Oaks Park (166 bus)\, Banstead (train)\, Ewell East & Cheam (train and bus) and in the possibly unlikely event we get as far as Ewell village it’s the train from Ewell West back to East Croydon\, via Clapham Junction. \nMeet in Coulsdon (get there by many buses from Croydon) outside the Pembroke pub (which opens at 10am so one could have something there first) by 10.35am to set off at 10.45am. (The Pembroke pub (a Wetherspoon-like place) is in central Coulsdon\, just near the start of where the Chipstead Valley Road branches off from Brighton Road and is near a Tesco-Express – we finished by going in there last Sunday.) \nAdventures in store no doubt…as we found last Sunday and other times\, one can never be sure what’s gonna happen while walking the LOOP\, it’s almost enough to send you loopy! \n  \nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589 \n
