SUMMARY:Isle of Dogs Walk
DESCRIPTION:Here is the Itinerary for the Sunday 17th March Isle of Dogs Walk.\nMeet at East Croydon Station at 9.40am to catch the 9.51 platform 2 to London Bridge.\nLondon Bridge train to Greenwich leaves at 10.16 from platform 4. Arrives Greenwich 10.27. \nFrom Greenwich Station we do a short walk to The Gate Clock (Wetherspoons) pub (Creek Rd next to Cutty Sark DLR stn) for a coffee and toilet break.\n(The reason is that unfortunately there is no cafe on the walk\, but there are toilets) \nThe walk begins at 11.00am at the Greenwich foot Tunnel south (Greenwich) entrance.\nWe expect the walk to conclude at the Ledger House (Wetherspoons) pub on West India Dock Quay around 3.30pm.\nTheir usual reasonably priced menu is available\, but there are plenty of other eating places in the vicinity if you want to pay more.\nThe timings will enable those who want to\, to get back to Croydon and attend the St Patrick’s Day event at Ruskin House in the evening. \nThere are several options for returning back to East Croydon:\n1. Elizabeth Line Canary Wharf to Farringdon station and then direct rail to East Croydon. (my choice)\n2. DLR West India Quay to Shadwell and Overground to West Croydon Station.\n3. Jubilee Line Canary Wharf to Canada Water and Overground to West Croydon Station.\n4. Jubilee Line Canary Wharf to London Bridge and train to East Croydon.\n5.  DLR West India Quay to Lewisham and no75 bus to Croydon.

SUMMARY:Countryside Walk - 7ish miles
DESCRIPTION:Here are details of my countryside walk on Sunday 10 March 2024.  Approx 7 miles (ok maybe 8).  An early (for some) start: \n\nMeet at East Croydon train station ticket hall at 9.15am.  (This will delight Barry.) \n\nWe catch the 9.31am train to Chipstead.   We return later in the day from somewhere further down that line\, sorry not sure which station yet\, so if you don’t want to use Oyster / contactless\, suggest buy a return to Tattenham Corner.   Or if you prefer\, buy a return to Chipstead and a single for the rest at the relevant station later.   (The whole line is in Oyster zone 6.) \n\nWe will walk via the outstanding landscape around Chipstead\, Mugswell\, Colley Hill\, Walton Heath etc.   Do bring some packed refreshments and drink with you as there is no planned indoor lunch stop.  However I will try to include a café and or the Sportsman pub at Mogador – but doubtful there will be room or time to sit and have a proper meal.   We will likely reach our destination and return station around 3.30pm where there may be an opportunity for a more leisurely pub stop.  But don’t bank on it. \n\nSorry if details are a bit sketchy\, left it a bit late to check and my first choice has been thwarted by a rail replacement bus between Purley and Redhill.   That does not impact Tattenham Corner line. \n\nWear boots or wellies in expectation of mud. \n\nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Day trip to Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be aiming to take the 9.01am direct train from East Croydon which is due to arrive 10.41am at Cambridge.  Meet at East Croydon station from 8.30am. \nWe have a guide for the day\, so we’ll all have a much closer look at some of the famous colleges\, “the backs” and the river cam but feel free to go off on your own if you want to. There is a lunch stop at ‘The Granta pub’ on the river Cam.  If time allows we will also go to a famous ‘back street’ pub for drinks before heading back to Cambridge station at about 7pm for a direct train back to East Croydon. \n \n

SUMMARY:Brutalist Architecture Walk
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon walk finishing with an option for an early evening pizza near Norwood Junction station. \nMeet at East Croydon station at 2pm. \nThe title of the walk\, as put forward to the Copse November planning meeting\, is “The brutalist architecture of Croydon and South Norwood”. I got the idea from an event at Bookseller Crow entitled “Concretopia: a brutal decade” a talk by Croydon author John Grinrod which was attended by Val\, Alan and myself. This was supplemented by the “Little Manhattan” audio tour supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and more recently by Elain Harwood’s “Brutalist Britain” which includes buildings in Croydon and South Norwood. \nMost of the buildings we will visit will be in central Croydon so we will leave from outside East Croydon station at 2pm. If anyone is running late (hopefully not!) my number is 07931 533785. Due to weekend engineering works we will later take one of the several buses that run between Croydon and South Norwood to see the last few buildings on my tour there. I plan to end the tour at the Shelverdine Goathouse pub (7-8 High Street\, South Norwood SE25 6EP) for drinks and then to order in takeaways to the pub (they don’t charge for this) from local eateries of your choice eg pizza\, Chinese\, Thai should wish to stay for something to eat. \nFOR THOSE WISHING TO STAY FOR OR JUST COME TO THE GOATHOUSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP SO I CAN ENSURE WE HAVE SUFFICIENT SEATING  \nThank you and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday \nJulie \n

SUMMARY:Geeks' Transport Tour
DESCRIPTION:Here is some information about next Saturday’s Geeks’ Transport Tour (of part of London) 2024.  This is a day for riding and observing London’s very new and established transport infrastructure with a bit of sight seeing on the way.  This year I have some new features on the London’s transport network for you to experience and a glimpse at the bright new future of high speed rail.   We will be going West and North West. \nMeet in East Croydon station main ticket hall at 10.15am on Sat 24 February.  \nIf you are already “rail side” go to platform 1.   I plan to catch the 10.28 train to Victoria (but alighting at Clapham Junction). \nWe will venture as far as zone 5 on the other side of London using National Rail\, London Overground\, London Underground\, TfL buses including Superloop plus shanks’s pony – in other words WALKING.   Say\, up to a mile in one go and lesser distances here and there\, almost entirely on “made” footpaths but there’s an optional short stretch of unmade / leaf mouldy / bit of mud path.  So decent walking footwear is good. \nAn oyster card or contactless payment card will be the ideal “ticket to ride”.   Just as a London freedom pass or such like is ideal for those that have them.  A reminder that TfL caps your daily fare so  you don’t pay than you should. \nOut tour will take in the biggest single construction site in London (for HS2 “terminus” at Old Oak Common); a land mark church on a hill (optional); coffee break; lunch break; some television heritage; a reservoir; more than one new / up and coming “quarters”; a new Superloop bus service; passing unusual religious buildings and numerous trains and stations.  Oh and a brand new mainline railway station.  Blimey that sounds vaguely interesting.  But it is “geeky”.  Nevertheless participants of tours in recent years have spoken highly of them! \nBring a curious outlook and a bit of patience. \n  \nAndrew Thynne \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Walk in Epping Forest
DESCRIPTION:Epping Forest is a large wooded area in NE London\, with plenty of fairly easy walking. \nSo meet at E. Croydon station at 9.20 for the 9.33 train to London Bridge. Then by 149 bus to Liverpool Street station for the Overground to Chingford. (Zone 5) \nFrom there it is a short walk to the ancient Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge\, visitor centre and cafe. Then it will be about a 7 mile circular walk via High Beech (another visitor centre\, cafe\, pub) back to Chingford. \nIt could be quite muddy in places\, so boots may be best. Also bring your own lunch if you don’t want to rely on the cafes etc. \nHope to see you there\, \nBarry \n–

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys - Stroll 2*
DESCRIPTION:We all enjoyed the Pepys Walk on 10th December\, so here’s the second instalment.\nWhere?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time around the streets of the City of London. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.03 East Croydon Platform 2 to Blackfriars\, exiting on the North side\, where the walk starts \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nOutside Blackfrairs Underground  station from our scheduled arrival time about 12.30\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/crazy.ripe.good\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n*I know\, this was originally advertised as a Country Walk. Humble apologies. \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. You can use the links to find any 3-metre square on earth. For best results\, download the App.

SUMMARY:continuing with the London LOOP . . .
DESCRIPTION:Continue from Coulsdon around to Oaks Park\, onward to cross the ‘mad mile’ at Banstead Downs\, and then towards Nonsuch Park & site of Nonsuch Palace\, and possibly as far as Ewell. Potentially as much as 8 miles or so\, with some mud and some suburban pavements. Refreshment possibilities in Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park\, Nonsuch Park\, and perhaps other unexpected places. A chance to leave at Clockhouse (bus)\, Oaks Park (166 bus)\, Banstead (train)\, Ewell East & Cheam (train and bus) and in the possibly unlikely event we get as far as Ewell village it’s the train from Ewell West back to East Croydon\, via Clapham Junction. \nMeet in Coulsdon (get there by many buses from Croydon) outside the Pembroke pub (which opens at 10am so one could have something there first) by 10.35am to set off at 10.45am. (The Pembroke pub (a Wetherspoon-like place) is in central Coulsdon\, just near the start of where the Chipstead Valley Road branches off from Brighton Road and is near a Tesco-Express – we finished by going in there last Sunday.) \nAdventures in store no doubt…as we found last Sunday and other times\, one can never be sure what’s gonna happen while walking the LOOP\, it’s almost enough to send you loopy! \n  \nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589 \n

SUMMARY:London Loop walk: Hamsey Green to Oaks Park
DESCRIPTION:We will be continuing the London LOOP\, picking up from where we left off (last March!!) at Hamsey Green\, and probably get as far as Oaks Park (8 and a half miles). But wherever we stop there are buses back into Croydon. \nJust to remind\, the LOOP is the London Outer Orbital Path which goes around London through the greener parts\, parks\, commons\, etc. and occasional delights of suburbia\, and is around 150 miles in all! \nThe terrain is gently undulating\, with some mud – some places of refreshment en route\, you can leave at Kenley\, Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park. \nTime and place. Meet up at the bus stop outside Fairfield Halls by 10am\, and we’ll take the first 403 bus to Hamsey Green.

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys
DESCRIPTION:Where?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys from Westminster to the City of London. I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys? \n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.05 Croydon Platform 1 to Victoria\, then District & Circle line to Westminster. \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nVictoria station from our scheduled arrival time 12.21\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/venue.runner.slurs\n\n\n\n\noutside Westminster underground station\, Victoria Embankment (Exit 2 – statue of Boudicca) from about 12.45\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/manliness.fact.proper\n\n\n\n. \nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. SUMMARY:Kew Gardens Christmas Winter Light Show
DESCRIPTION:As part of their Christmas celebrations\, Kew Gardens are running their annual spectacular Winter Lights trail through the gardens from 15 November 2023 to 7 January 2024. I am intending to go on Wednesday 22 November arriving for the 6pm time slot. Anyone who would like to join me would be very welcome. I went to this trail last year and can thoroughly recommend it. \nYou will need to buy your own ticket. If the 6pm time slot is sold out you could try and book for the 6.20 slot. The cost is £22.50 (off peak charge) Plus £2.50 transaction fee. You can protect your ticket against illness or accident for £1.65. It also protects against transport disruption\, not known about at the time of booking. To buy tickets go to https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens/whats-on/christmas. There you will find all the information you need. You should note that there are no refunds for bad weather unless the event is cancelled because of safety concerns. \n If you are joining me make sure you pick the 6pm time slot (if it’s still available) and if\, like me\, you are coming by public transport also pick the Elizabeth Gate as your entry point. If coming by car you can reserve a space when you purchase your ticket in Kew’s Ferry Lane Car Park. There are also spaces at the National Archives Car Park. Your entry point would be the Brentford Gate. For those who haven’t been there\, Kew Gardens is easy to reach by train from East Croydon via Clapham Junction to Kew Bridge Station\, from where it’s an 8-10 minute walk to the gardens. \nThe trail is approximately 3 km and takes up to 2 hours to walk through. Once you are inside the gardens you can spend as long as you like\, although there is a one way system. There are stalls along the way selling food and hot drinks. The cafe by the Victoria Gate will also be open. The trail is described on the website as follows \nIt’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. \nDiscover glittering tunnels of light\, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour. \nFor a moment of reflection\, pause at mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden\, wander beneath larger-than-life illuminations and don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way. \nPlease let me know if you would like to join me – It’s best that you buy your ticket(s) as soon as possible since this event is very popular. Depending on the interest I will send out details later of meeting times at either East Croydon or the Elizabeth Gate.

SUMMARY:Geology Walk. (Croydon Minster to Addington Village + Pub)
DESCRIPTION:Andy will take us on an educational stroll – things you never knew about Croydon geology. \nThe Croydon Geology Walk will start from Croydon Minster Parish Church near Reeves Corner at 11 am on Sunday 12th November. \nThe walk starts in Croydon town centre\, crosses parkland\, goes through woods and up a steep wooded hill and down a gentle gradient along roads and to Addington Park. \nDistance about 4 miles or 6.2km. \nWe should get to The Harvesters Cricketers pub in Addington between 1.30 and 2 dependent on dawdling and field conditions. \nThe pub serves food. I’ve never eaten there but I guess its standard “old favorites” Harvesters fare. \nThe Addington Village Interchange for buses and trams is across the way. \nCheers! \nAndy

I will meet people at Sutton\, but there’s a possibility I may not be able to get on until the train calls at Epsom. \nIf you want to come via Redhill\, there is engineering work involving a bus replacement for part of the way\, but you could do this route if you want. Let me know and we’ll pass the Deepdene Stn on the way to Brockham. \nWe will walk to Brockham a slightly different way from that we follow on Saturday\, given that it will be light. We may well come back a different way\, via Box Hill\, either around the top or base\, depending on time. \nBurning the Sticks will be at around 1pm around the embers of the Bonfire (which some of us will have been at the night before) with Morris Dancing by Rampant Roosters Morris. The pub will be there too and you can bring your own stuff too. \nAbout 7 miles walk\, possibly with a high ascent in the afternoon! \nPaul N/ 07968 223589

SUMMARY:BROCKHAM BONFIRE. Torchlight procession\, bonfire & fireworks
DESCRIPTION:Subject to there being NO TRAIN STRIKE. in the event of a strike\, it is possible a local fireworks maybe arranged.\nThere will be Donation Buckets (Please be as generous as you can) at the Entrance. Donations and carpark are payable in CASH. They are trialling CASHLESS PAYMENTS on the CATERING STALLS AND PIG AUCTION. \nFurther details from Paul:\nThis is no ordinary bonfire etc. They’ve been building the bonfire since September\, and they even have some kind of ceremony with the cinders on the Sunday which I believe involves Morris Dancing?. ..(it’s called Burning the Sticks) \nWell\, I’m not intending staying overnight there\, but – as I only go to this event about eight-yearly – I do intend to do the whole blooming thing\, starting at 6.30pm with the marching band procession leaving Brockham Green at this time – flaming torches will be given out. The procession goes down south to a hamlet (Stroud Green\, I believe) and then back again a different way to Brockham. The huge bonfire will be lit by one of the torches at 7.45pm\, once the Guy effigy has been placed on top. The Fireworks are at 8.15pm\, and\, as I’m not really into roasting pigs\, I’ll hang around a just a bit and then leave. \nYou don’t actually pay an admission fee as the village is open to all\, but there will be donation buckets for your coins or notes. You can also sponsor a firework! Food is sold at stalls and the pub is open\, but quite frankly I never do any of this owing to the queues\, so you could bring your own sustenance along. \nTo get there and back I shall be walking along what’s known as the Old Coach Road from Dorking to the village\, a walk of around 45 mins. One can get to Brockham by car and use a car park\, or one can go by special bonfire bus from Redhill/Reigate or Dorking. Again\, I never do this\, as I don’t drive\, and I’ve heard that the buses get full\, and it’s nice walking back in the dark with the other crowds. \nSo there’s quite a bit of walking involved\, but if anyone wants to try the car or bus option\, or doesn’t want to do the whole thing (i.e.\, just turn up later for the Bonfire & Fireworks) then that’s fine…I’ll leave my phone on loud – keep ringing and ringing! \nMay I suggest you go to the website for the bonfire: www.brockham.org/brockham-bonfire \n…to see all the details of the above. \nI am going whatever the weather\, and may not even look at the forecast! \nI suggest we meet outside Dorking DEEPDENE RAILWAY STATION to leave here on foot BY 5.00pm. I shall come from Epsom Downs\, so I’ll leave you to arrange your own travel. You could come down from West Croydon to Dorking MAIN station and WALK 5 mins around the corner to DEEPDENE station. I see that there are trains from East Croydon to Dorking DEEPDENE\, changing at Redhill at\, 3.36pm and 4.17pm arriving about 37 mins later (there’s a little pub nearby going north under the bridge). (There are more trains back to Croydon from Dorking MAIN station. Get your map out and observe the two Dorking stations we are talking about\, MAIN and DEEPDENE\, which are about five mins walk from each other. I can pop by to MAIN to pick anyone up who is not sure about finding their way to DEEPDENE. I shall be coming to MAIN by train) \nBRING CASH\, CASH\, CASHY McCASH!!!…and don’t wear your best brand new fleece (a COPSEr had their new fleece singed by an ember from the bonfire some years back!) \nAll the above is not as complicated as it may sound…just read it a few times and go to the bonfire website. Any questions\, contact me (NOT by email on the day itself). \nI recall the last time or so we did this bonfire we had a walk along the North Downs BEFOREHAND. We are not going to be that keen this time! But I might go visit the very newly opened Dorking Museum beforehand and cruise the charity shops of Dorking High Street. If anyone else is interested in doing this too\, then contact me. \n…And if anyone knows about the Cinders ceremony on the Sunday\, I MIGHT be up for this as well\, as I’ve never done this before. (Update: he is doing it! see tomorrow’s entry here) It would mean doing the same walk to Brockham again\, maybe back a different way though. \nI expect I’ve forgotten some crucial detail which will come to me while washing up or brushing my teeth tonight\, so look out for follow-ons from this email during the week. \n  \nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589.
