DESCRIPTION:The circular walk begins from Berwick Station at 10.25 am \nGETTING HERE \nThere is a train departing East Croydon at 09.10 and arriving at Lewes at 09.56 \nThen take the train from Lewes at 10.14 to arrive at Berwick at 10.25 \nI will catch the train from Lewes to Berwick. \nThere is a car park at Berwick Station for those who wish to drive  Maybe advisable to prebook in advance to secure a space – £4.60 for the day.   Parking in Berwick Station Parking | Prebook Online | APCOA | APCOA \nThe walk is a fairly easy 7 and half mile walk in beautiful countryside but does have STILES.    As I propose to do half the route (the Western/central churches)\, we should have plenty of time either in churches (there is a Pilgrim table and stamp in each) or a nearby pub (you get to choose) and then regroup to continue. \nWe will have visited 4 churches/pubs in this walk and I can do another walk to see the others later on in the year   The longest stop should be at Alfriston as there are so many choices.  There are 3 really old 16 th century Inns\, lots of cosy tea shops\, a large church\, small museum or if you want to increase mileage can set off on the riverside walk (being mindful of time we need to regroup).   At the end of the walk there is a lovely inn right by Berwick station where\, if you wish\, ( or have time waiting for train)\, we can stop for a drink and maybe try for a bite to eat. \nCuckmere Pilgrim Path \nHope this all makes sense and please contact me if there are any problems. DESCRIPTION:Here are some details of the open air theatre trip programmed for Thursday 31 July. \nTheatre Workshop Coulsdon’s annual show at Coulsdon Manor this year is and adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. It’s a lovely venue – in a wooded glade on the golf course of Coulsdon Manor. But 466 runs by. YOU NEED TO BRING A CHAIR. Parking is possible. \nThe show is 7.45pm. Tickets £12. They usually provide pizza in the interval if booked on arrival (extra cost). I will check this is happening. There is also a small bar. We would be able to travel together from East Croydon bus station (or stops south of). YOU NEED TO BRING A CHAIR. People usually bring a camping chair. COPSE has a couple you could borrow for a token rent. You would have to take them after the Club night by 29th July and carry them. It is approx. 500m walk from the bus stop to the venue. \nI suggest you get your own ticket but if this proves difficult speak to me. DESCRIPTION:A free “Visitors’ Walk or Cycle Ride”\nJoin us for either\, meet some of our Members and find out more about our Club! \n  \nThe Walk \nMeet outside Croydon Central Library in Katharine Street at 1.30pm. https://w3w.co/lands.body.rivers  \nThis will be an Urban Mystery Walk\, taking in parts of Croydon with some interesting history and things to spot!  This will take about three and a half hours at an easy speed\, allowing for observations and comments. \nDistance is about six miles but with various pauses (and various opt-out points\, if necessary).  It will end just into part of South Croydon – – with teas / coffees and cake! \nSome specific streets and landmarks will be included.  Hopefully\, some interesting information can be gleaned about places we too often just hurry and scurry past.  If you are able to enlighten us with your additional knowledge as we go around\, that will be to the benefit of all! \nTo Bring: Any food or drink you can consume as we wend our way along our route.  No refreshment stops are included until we end the afternoon. \nTo Wear: Fingers are crossed for dry weather – please do come clad in keeping with the weather forecast. \nComfy town footwear should be fine – but not your Sunday best because there will be a couple of leaf-strewn paths that might be a little mucky. \nThere will be a “glossy souvenir brochure” for all who attend! \n  \nThe Cycle Ride\nMeet outside Croydon Central Library in Katharine Street at 1.30pm. https://w3w.co/lands.body.rivers  \nThe route will be a flat\, return ride to Greenwich and its surrounds\, 20 miles total\, finishing in South Croydon – for coffees / teas and cake! \nTo Bring: Your en-route drinks and snacks.  There will be a refreshment stop opportunity at Greenwich. \nTo Wear:  Cyclists should consider wearing a helmet and  any other appropriate safety cycling attire. \nThe ride will be suitable for all types of bikes.

DESCRIPTION:The next Green Spaces Walk will be Hamsey Green to Old Coulsdon. \nDistance is about 8 miles or 13km\, taking about 6 hours including a 30 mins refreshment break at Kenley Common and 1 hour lunch stop at The Fox pub. \nThe terrain is mixed; downhill from Hamsey Green to Godstone Road in Whyteleaf\, then uphill to Kenley Aerodrome\, then flat/undulating to the Fox lunch stop\, then downhill to Happy Valley\, and then uphill into the woods\, then downhill to Happy Valley and a steep uphill to Ellis Road Playground where we follow the contour to Old Coulsdon and a final uphill to the Tudor Rose and Old Coulsdon centre. \nBring plenty to drink and some food and I would advise to bring some lunch.\nThere is a COOP at Hamsey Green but not much along the route.\nFood is available at the Fox but it can be very popular and you may not be able to order and eat in the time available. \nWhere to Meet \nHamsey Green\, at the junction of Limpsfield Road and Tithepit Shaw Lane at 9.30 – https://w3w.co/miles.either.scare.\nThere is a regular bus 403 from Croydon to Warlingham. Hamsey Green stop. \nWe’ll set off at 9.45\nFirst stop Kenley Common 11.15/30 30 mins\nLunch The Fox 1.00-2.00 \nWe finish in Old Coulsdon at the Tudor Rose /Grange Park between 3.30 to 4pm\nIn Old Coulsdon there is the Tudor Rose pub\, a Morrisons Local mini supermarket\, and a cafe in Grange park that shuts 4 to 4.30.\nFrom here there are regular 60 buses to Croydon via Coulsdon rail stations\, and 466 buses to Croydon and Caterham-on-the-Hill. \nI look forward to seeing you all!\nAndy

DESCRIPTION:I’ve had a great response for the trip and unfortunately I can’t take any more people. \nIf you want to come and are prepared to arrange your own accommodation etc then I can give you information of where we are staying. \nLinda \n\nACCOMMODATION \nhttps://www.islandview.ie/index.html \nIsland View is located in the fishing village of Roundstone\, Connemara\, County Galway. This will accommodate about 12 of us (two to a room)  and through the same owners I can book a 3 x bed-roomed cottage in the village of Roundstone\, called Bakery Cottage. Who goes where will depend on the final male/female split. \nAll rooms have en-suite facilities and we would be self-catering. \nTherefore I am capping this trip at 15 people. \nTRAVEL \nFly to Knock Airport. \nThere is a late morning flight by Aer Lingus departs 11.00 from Heathrow arrives Knock at 12.30. \nThe transfer time to the accommodation is 2hrs 20mins\, or longer if you go by Bus. \nWe are planning to hire 5 seater cars (the cars work out cheaper than mini-buses) to collect at the airport and for use throughout the week.  This also means that with 3 cars and 3 drivers the group can split up to go to different places of interest. \nThe flight back departs about 1pm from Knock Airport. \nThere are alternative flights from different airports and we are still looking at the options. DESCRIPTION:After the success of the Berlin Trip last year we’re off to foreign parts again! \n \nThis Amsterdam trip has got off the ground.  (Cue joke about the ground in the Netherlands not being very high – can’t think of one.)  It’s not too late to join in. \nWe have nine booked to travel on Eurostar.  (Out Wed 30 April\, return Tues 6 May – two extending a few more days.  Direct train London / Amsterdam approx. 4hr 40min.  All discounts that me and another copser can access are used but standard fares range widely and are worth a look.) \nMost are currently reserved at a “Stayokay” hostel.  Some spaces are available in this initial booking (bunks in same sex\, COPSE-only rooms with bathroom: £48 to £53 per person per night depending on number; breakfast extra; 12% tourist tax extra).  A few are seeking hotel accommodation nearby.  I can provide details. \nEmail me if interested and we’ll see what we can do. \nActivities\nThere are of course loads of quaint canal side scenes\, world renown art galleries (Rijksmuseum\, Van Gogh Musuem)\, Anne Frank house\, city and Dutch culture.  I have never been so open to recommendations.   I also propose that we make a day trip to see Arnhem (50 mins / 1hr by train) to see what Croydon’s twin town is like and visit the museum about the allied attempt to capture the Rhine bridge https://www.airbornemuseum.nl/en/airborne-at-the-bridge  There is also scenic heathland in the vicinity of Arnhem that would be pleasant to walk in or cycle through. \nAnd we shall aim to have a tulip field tour / trip. \nRegards \nAndrew \n

DESCRIPTION:A Tasty Time With a Fishy Result!\n \n\nFirstly\, we need some tasters!  If you are able to arrive at the hall ready to depart from there by 8pm this Tuesday\, happily becoming a “crew member” for cruising some local-ish chippies\, please let me know.  We have a few volunteer drivers to transport these important tasters to the necessary fish and chip shops.  At each\, one portion of chips will be purchased and all COPSErs who are there will taste a chip or two and award points out of ten.  This Club crew will then proceed to the next chippy and repeat the process.  These tasters will be important people!  The results of their voting will dictate to which chippy we return to buy fish and chips for all to eat back at the hall.\n\n\n The purchasing of fish and chips for all will depend on the pre-ordering.  If you are not one of the “chip shop crawlers”\, you will still need to let me know in advance\, if you wish to enjoy a fish and chip supper together with your fellow Members.  We envisage being back at the hall with the hot take-aways by about 9pm.  Andy\, plus some probable helpers\, will be kindly setting up the “COPSE Café” while the tasters are on the road.  It is a good number of years since we last undertook this “crawl” but now\, as then\, the evening will overall be a chance to socialize a little at the hall and also with car-sharing passengers.\n\n\n N.B. DESCRIPTION:Valerie and I had a very enjoyable stay at Port Lympne earlier this year so I thought this would appeal to some other COPSErs – an animal park & safari weekend on the 15 & 16th March 2025. \n\nPort Lympne Hotel & Reserve is set against hundreds of acres of stunning “Kentish savannah” overlooking Romney Marsh. There are 900 animals across 75 species that call Port Lympne their home and it is a haven for many rare and endangered animals. Expert keepers look after the incredible animals that call our 600 acre park home\, day in and day out and invite you to catch a glimpse into where the wild things are! Please click here to view the web site. \n\n\nAccess to the parks (Howletts and Port Lympne) is from opening on Saturday morning to closing on Sunday evening (about 12 hours of daylight).\nView the wild animals at leisure in quieter times\, while the park’s closed to the public.\nIncluded is a safari in an open-sided truck with live expert commentary.\nAnimal encounters and photography workshop are at extra cost and subject to availability.\nThe on-site hotel has a bar and restaurant\, and there are additional eateries and picnic spots in the parks. SUMMARY:London Loop Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hi All\, continuing from where we left off at West Drayton\, about 8-9 miles. Taking us into Berkshire and to ‘nine o’clock’ on the imaginary clock-face of the LOOP\, this 150 mile route around London following green spaces\, rivers\, a canal\, and occasional suburban streets.\n\nThis is the most watery part of the LOOP (perhaps in more ways than one!). We follow the River Colne and the Grand Union Canal for much of the way as they make their way through and between lakes. We cross an aqueduct where the Canal goes over a river (very strange) and go under the new HS2 rail viaduct\, which is quite a sight/site (so I am reliably told). There will no doubt be many boats of character to see on the Grand Union (we may even bump into Robbie Cummins on his Naughty Lass and end up on the telly!?). Oh and there’ll be some Locks\, as you’d expect on a canal\, one with an 11ft drop. There are a couple of pubs along the way and a likely possible tea shop (but probably no pole dancing this time!).\n\nBut bring some drink and food along just in case\, and be prepared for some mud in places and on the towpath.\n\nIt will be possible to leave/join about half way at Uxbridge if wished\, and also a possibility to stop at Widewater Lock\, a mile and a half short of West Harefield for a bus back to Uxbridge if wished.\n\nBut…We may well get as far as West Harefield (near Harefield Hospital) where we catch a bus to Uxbridge Underground station and come back into a central London Terminal of choice to get back to East Croydon\, etc.\n\nMeet West Drayton Rail Stn in the main foyer (split into two adjoining parts\, but either part will do) at 10.45am\, ready to depart by or before 11am. \n\nA Travelcard Zones 1-6 is good for to-day at £11.00 with a discount card.\n\nA recommended route for you is: 09.07 from East Croydon (via Victoria\, tube to Paddington\, then Elizabeth Line to West Drayton). But do your own research\, as the advert says\n\nIf you encounter any problems getting to the start be sure to phone me\, and we can wait for the next arrival at 11.07am\, but only if really necessary please.\n\nIf a general consensus among yourselves\, prefers a half an hour later start\, then I am open to this BUT OTHERWISE we stick to the above.\n\nPaul 07968 223589

DESCRIPTION:Here are details about the event on Sunday 2 March – Geeks Transport Tour of London 2025.   Meeting times further below.  (Basically 9.15am East Croydon.) \nThis year’s trundle round (part of ) London’s transport system to view new and historic transport and development related attractions features a trambus\, a glulam roof\, a station box\, an award wining audio visual experience\, step free access (a lift) seamlessly integrated within a Grade II listed station\, restored and celebrated heritage and more besides.  Likely even a Guyanese kitchen – Dionne note. \nPlaces include Beckenham Road\, Crystal Palace\, Surrey Quays\, Elephant & Castle\, the Outernet (what’s that?)\, Paddington\, Barons Court\, Hanwell and Victoria.  And others.  Not necessarily in that order and subject to variation. \nGeeks will hardly be able to contain their excitement\, so I am proposing an early (for me) start of: \nEast Croydon tramstop 09:15am   (to catch 09:27am tram towards Beckenham Junction.   So be prompt.) \nor join later: \nboard tram at Addiscombe at 09:34am \nalight / meet at Beckenham Road tramstop at 09:45am   (Bob Clare note) \nCrystal Place bus station 10:10am \nCrystal Palace rail station approx. 10.45am \nWe will incorporate refreshment breaks where we can.  We will likely have a lunch break at Elephant & Castle (either Kaieteur Kitchen Original  or Elephant & Castle – Mercato Metropolitano \nAnd end at Market Halls Victoria | Restaurant & Bar In London Victoria \nCheers \nAndrew

DESCRIPTION:The three Pepys Walks we’ve done so far have been popular\, so we’re back for Episode IV – along the river to Greenwich\n\n\nWhere?\nAgain we’ll be following the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time leaving the City and Court to explore his naval connections. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will continue to persist in offering their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 5-6 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 8.5 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. Leaving opportunities will be more restricted than central London\, but there are connections to transport at Bermondsey (Jubilee line)\, Rotherhithe (Windrush line) and no doubt a selection of bus routes. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. SUMMARY:Snowdrop Day at Gatton Park\, Redhill
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 16th join me at Gatton Park in Reigate on one of their snowdrop days.  Last time we went\, a few years ago now\, we were taken on a tour of the gardens. They are not large so the visit is a pleasant way to spend a February afternoon.\n\nThere are cakes (yeh!) and refreshments available to purchase and the website says there is a plant sale.\n\nThe gardens are open from 12pm to 5pm\, so I suggest we meet at 12pm outside the house which is also the ticket office.\n\nTickets cost £6.00 if purchased online in advance or £7.50 on the day –  https://gattonpark.co.uk/visit/opening-times/\n\n\nHow to get there\nAddress: Gatton Park\, Reigate\, Surrey\, RH2 0TW\nBy car from M25\nExit Junction 8\, taking the A217 towards Reigate. After 400 metres fork left onto Gatton Bottom (signposted Merstham). After one mile turn right onto Rocky Lane. The entrance is on the right after a further 400 metres and is signposted Royal Alexandra and Albert School.\n\nThere is a big car park.\n\n\nBy Bus from Croydon \n10.56: 405 Bus from Park Street (stop KH) to East Surrey College \nWalk 0.7 miles to Gatton Park \nBy Train from Croydon \n11.12: Train East Croydon-Merstham – meet Barry at the station from 10.50. \nWalk 1.5 miles to Gatton Park \n\n\nIf you are driving and can offer lifts let me know.\n\nLet me know a few days beforehand if you are coming\, just so I’ve an idea of numbers\, or by all means turn up on the day.  Hopefully the weather will be okay – I will only cancel if the forecast is dire!\n\nLinda
