SUMMARY:Snowdrop Day at Gatton Park\, Redhill
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 16th join me at Gatton Park in Reigate on one of their snowdrop days.  Last time we went\, a few years ago now\, we were taken on a tour of the gardens. They are not large so the visit is a pleasant way to spend a February afternoon.\n\nThere are cakes (yeh!) and refreshments available to purchase and the website says there is a plant sale.\n\nThe gardens are open from 12pm to 5pm\, so I suggest we meet at 12pm outside the house which is also the ticket office.\n\nTickets cost £6.00 if purchased online in advance or £7.50 on the day –  https://gattonpark.co.uk/visit/opening-times/\n\n\nHow to get there\nAddress: Gatton Park\, Reigate\, Surrey\, RH2 0TW\nBy car from M25\nExit Junction 8\, taking the A217 towards Reigate. After 400 metres fork left onto Gatton Bottom (signposted Merstham). After one mile turn right onto Rocky Lane. The entrance is on the right after a further 400 metres and is signposted Royal Alexandra and Albert School.\n\nThere is a big car park.\n\n\nBy Bus from Croydon \n10.56: 405 Bus from Park Street (stop KH) to East Surrey College \nWalk 0.7 miles to Gatton Park \nBy Train from Croydon \n11.12: Train East Croydon-Merstham – meet Barry at the station from 10.50. \nWalk 1.5 miles to Gatton Park \n\n\nIf you are driving and can offer lifts let me know.\n\nLet me know a few days beforehand if you are coming\, just so I’ve an idea of numbers\, or by all means turn up on the day.  Hopefully the weather will be okay – I will only cancel if the forecast is dire!\n\nLinda

SUMMARY:Burns Night Ceilidh\, Stanley Halls
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \n\n\nA day ahead of the actual date\, COPSErs can gather to enjoy marking the occasion on Friday\, 24th January.  Remembering how many of us were on our feet gaining “exercise with smiles on our faces” at our  September dinner and barn dance\, here is the chance for everyone to enjoy a lively ceilidh.\n\nWe always had a good sized group of us going to the regular ceilidhs at the Stanley Halls before lockdown. They have not been as fully-established since and\, although I’ve just been to see the new Manager of the premises\, I don’t think we can gain discounted ticket prices for this particular dance.  However\, I am told that tickets are selling very fast and we need to book quickly\, if we wish a number of us to go there together.  I am happy to make a group booking on behalf of any COPSE Members who give me their names and confirm that they will pay me.\n\nI hope to make such a booking on Monday so please let me know as soon as possible\, if you would like your name on the list.\n\n\nUPDATE\n\n\n\n\nLocation Stanley Hall\nDate Jan 24\n\nDoors open: 7pm\nDancing begins: 8pm\nTickets are available on the door from £15.\n\nTime 7.00pm till 10.30pm\nTickets £6-£15\nAges14+ (U18s accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\nThere might be a reduced price for paying in advance but I’ll have to advise that as soon as I can – and shall be sending out confirmation of bookings\n\nIf you are planning to come\, this is the chance to find some of your tartan garb in your wardrobes!  “Brownie points” to any of you who can recall why this photo shows one we could all wish to wear:\n\n\n\n\n(Hint: it is a scarf of mine that I brought to a Club Night “Objectivity” session a couple of times back.)\nPlease do come back to me a.s.a.p.\, if you would now like to come.

SUMMARY:RNLI Fundraiser at Ruskin House
DESCRIPTION:  \nBelow\, please find the reminder for this Saturday evening.  As per Margaret’s email\, you can enjoy the daytime with her but also be back in Croydon to enjoy music for a very good cause! \nSlotting most neatly into our COPSE programmes\, as a follow-on from last Tuesday’s Club Night\, is this Saturday’s local RNLI fundraising concert.  Details\, as per poster.  However\, I have arranged with the organiser that he will reserve seats for COPSErs to sit together\, if I can tell him in advance our number attending. \n  \n \n  \nYou will pay your own fee at the door.  (Some of us will gain the reduced entry cost!)  A good few COPSErs attended this concert previously and had an enjoyable\, musical evening.  If you would like to come this time\, please do let me know and you will be added to my Club list. \n  \nRegards \n  \nIreen Best (07968 035522) \n— \n

SUMMARY:Local Restaurant Evening Meal
DESCRIPTION:You might well like Cornish pasties and cream teas but\, “No!” these will not be served.  With the restaurant named “The TRURO”\, perhaps West Country favourites might be expected.  However\, that name is of a ship that travelled from India to South Africa\, during the 19th century.  The cuisine served at the restaurant is a combination of both those places. \nWe can be seated together\, separately from other tables. The menu is attached.  Ken and I have already enjoyed a meal there. \nOur COPSE booking is for 7pm (eating time is usually a little later\, by the time everyone is gathered and seated). \nLocation: 3-7 Southend\, Croydon\, CR0 1BE. From our hall\, it’s just straight along the main road towards Croydon\, the penultimate building on the right before Coombe Road. \nPlease let me know\, if you’d like to go on our dining list. \n  \nRegards\, \n  \nIreen Best (07968 035522) \n \n  \n—

SUMMARY:“NOW 90!” – our 90th birthday\, Kickoff Event – Saturday Afternoon Reception
DESCRIPTION:EVERYONE is invited to come along for an informal visit during the afternoon to enjoy a chat and catch a little of our club’s history by viewing some of our archive materials.  Sorry I couldn’t give the times sooner but I only gained them late yesterday. \nPlease come upstairs to the Wheeler Room whenever you choose between 1.30pm and 5pm.  The bar\, downstairs\, will be open all day for drinks and you can purchase lunch up to 2pm here’s the menu. \n \nAlso here’s the location map and note that the nearest bus stop is on Hogarth Crescent\, served by many routes from Croydon.  The Oakfield Road entrance to the building is also shown. \n \nPlease note that the driveway to the left goes to a small car park but it’s only available to those for whom I have been able to reserve a place and those people have already been informed.  Other drivers need to use the car park in Stanton Road\, behind the green railings. \n  \n \nImportant: all drivers must remember to register their car numberplates on the touchscreen\, when they enter the building.  This screen is on the left hand wall.  We have been advised that people coming for the afternoon\, leaving and returning by car for the evening\, should enter the details on both arrivals.  If you are coming only as an afternoon visitor\, please vacate the car park by 5.30pm. \nThose of you booked for the evening event: please arrive from 6.45pm to socialize a little with friends and buy drinks before we need to be seated at table by about 7.20pm. \nOur anniversary shindig is now very close!  I look forward to sharing it with many of you. 😊 \n

There are food stalls as well as a beer stall at North Weald station.  And beer sold on trains and at Ongar.\n\nTickets\nYou will need a ticket for the Epping Ongar Railway beer and cider festival event.  Get it here: https://www.eorailway.co.uk/events/real-ale-and-cider-festival/.\n\n\nGetting There\nI recommend getting there by public transport.  A bit of a trek maybe but ‘just’ a ride to the end of the Central Line\, transfer to a specially provisioned heritage bus (included in event ticket) for a short ride to North Weald station.  See notes below.  From where trains depart south to the old Epping Forest station (no alighting!) or north to Ongar station.  The route was until the 1980’s part of the London Underground system.  (The heritage trains running now are full size mainline type not old ‘tube trains’.)\n\n\nMore details in the links shared above.\n\nNotes\n\n\nThe Central Line does not directly connect with the heritage railway.  It is necessary to take a (specially provisioned heritage) bus from Epping station.  Suitable bus departures are 10.25 or 10.55.  The journey from Epping LU station to the heritage railway is 10 minutes.\nI intend to be at Epping for the 10.25 bus.  So that means catching the 9.03 Thameslink from East Croydon.  So that in turn means meeting at 8.50.  If you prefer not such an early start\, you could slip these times by half an hour.\nIn order to get the most out of the choir in action\, I think you should arrive at the Epping Ongar railway (North Weald station) by 11.30.  So\, as previously mentioned\, that means the connecting bus from Epping LU station at 10.55.  (Or 10.25 earlier\, which will enable you to do a quick trip from North Weald to Epping Forest and back by 11.30.)\nAllow 1 hour and 20 minutes East Croydon to Epping LU station.\nConfused?  Even more detail on heritage train timetable and connecting heritage bus timetable here: https://www.eorailway.co.uk/visit/date/28-07-2024/\nStill confused?  Just meet me at East Croydon ticket hall at 8.50am sharp.\nWe travel to London Bridge first.  Walk across to Bank underground station (or tube it if feeling lazy / pressed for time) and pick up the Central Line.\nWe depart Epping around 5pm for return home.\nI will be able to inform you where and when the choir are performing nearer the time – preferably share with you during the journey there if you make the early start.\n\n\n\n\n\nCheers!\nAndrew

SUMMARY:Local Restaurant Evening Meal
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, 27th June.\nTime: 7.00pm.\nVenue: “Noto” (previously known as “Aqua”)\, 33 – 35 South End.\n(Walking towards Croydon from our old watering hole\, “The Skylark”\, the restaurant is just a little further along\, on the right.)\nCuisine: “Mediterranean”\, with a bias to Greek and Italian.  A new menu will be in place prior to our visit but the variety should be similar to the present one.\n\nI am told several COPSE Members have happily eaten there in the past.  I was there recently with a friend.  Food was good and service was friendly and efficient.  We shall have a separate room for our use and I hope to have the tables arranged conference-style (depending on our numbers) so that we are not just in a long straight line.\n\nPlease let me know\, if you would like to go on the dining list.\n\nRegards\,\n\nIreen Best (07968 035522)

DESCRIPTION:Any COPSErs who come down to Dorking can gather to watch some colourful and energetic dancing\, wander around the quite pleasant town together\, locating a few of the local pubs\, share a lunch break in one of those –  or choose between the many coffee shops and other eateries.\n\nI leave individuals to work out their own transport arrangements (at present\, I am still in Berlin!) but I shall be travelling to Dorking by car.\n\nI suggest those wanting to enjoy the mass dance display at the start\, head for arrival at the Dorking Halls by 10.30am.  I aim to be there by then and shall be looking for some of you!\n\nTo conclude the day out\, please continue to the bottom of this message to see input from Margaret\, with her invitation to transfer eastwards to Reigate for the evening.\n\nHopefully\, phone signals will be good in Dorking town and any of you can reach me on my mobile\, as the daytime progresses.\n\nRegards\,\n\nIreen Best 07968 035522\n\n\n\n\n\n \nIreen and I are joining forces to offer an evening of music in Reigate to complement your Day of Dance in Dorking. It is very easy to get to Reigate from Dorking by train or bus. \n \nReigate Summer Festival: Home – Reigate Summer Festival is a new event for this year celebrating  various local arts groups.\n \nI will be there to promote Renewed Hope\, one of the three charities being supported by the festival:Reigate Summer Festival 2024 – GiveWheel.\n \nI suggest meeting at the Market Stores pub from 18:00 to discover what is on:\nSchedule – Reigate Summer Festival. The pub is very close to the main music venue\, the Tunnel Stage. We could also find somewhere to eat\, but it would be good to book this in advance.\n\nRegards\n \nMargaret

SUMMARY:Trip to Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Update 29th May\nNearly time to go! We currently have 14 intrepid travellers who have booked travel and accommodation. Some are going by train\, some flying from either Gatwick or London City\, and several different places to stay have been booked. \nYou can join us right up to the last minute if you can get the bookings – let me know if you have a sudden craving for currywurst in its native habitat and I can let you know everybody’s plans. \nKen \n\nHere’s a date for your diary: \nWe’re going to Berlin!\nIreen and I are going for a week\, travelling out on Thursday 6th June and back on Thursday 13th. Please join us for all or part of that time. \nWhy Berlin?\nBerlin is a fascinating city and well worth your time. There’s plenty to see and do – historic sites\, museums\, art galleries\, boat trips\, and\, of course\, tremendous nightlife for us youngsters. Not to mention the currywurst. Public transport is excellent and cheap\, though it’s also very walkable and even cyclable\, being mostly flat. \nThere will be a mixture of group\, small group and individual activities\, to be driven by the interests of those going. \nTravel\nAt this point the only arrangement made is our travel. We’re going by train\, which turns out to be one of the more expensive options – Eurostar St Pancras-Brussels\, then Brussels-Cologne-Berlin. Other travel options include bus and plane –  a good reference for travel options is Rome2Rio. As far as my research goes\, weekend travel is the most expensive\, while Thursday less so. \nAccommodation\nTo be arranged. \nIreen and I have made our own arrangements\, with my sister who lives there – very centrally\, near the Cathedral. For the rest of you\, there are many hostels to choose from\, and of course hotels\, AirBnB etc to consider. \nWhat Now?\nPlease let me know if you’re interested in this trip so we can gauge the demand for accommodation etc. More plans will be made! \n  \nKen

SUMMARY:Reigate Christmas Market (Morning) - Walk in area (Afternoon)
DESCRIPTION:Three events in one. \nIn the morning from 1130 you can shop at Reigate’s Christmas Fayre. \nIn the afternoon at 1315\, please meet Margaret at the Renewed Hope/RDO stall outside Hamptons Estate Agents at 6 Church St for a Linear Walk of 4-5 miles along the Greensand Way to Earlswood via Prior Park and Earlswood Commons. It maybe muddy in places\, so walking boots are recommended. There will be some uphill and downhill sections on the walk. \nPlease have your lunch etc. before starting the the walk and be ready to leave promptly at 13.30. \nTrains leave East Croydon at 10.46 and 11.16\, changing at Redhill. You can also get the 405 bus to Redhill and then another bus to Reigate\, There will be road closures in Reigate for the Fayre\, so parking maybe difficult. \nThe walk will probably finish in Redhill. However please bring Bus/Freedom Passpasses or £2/contactless for a bus ticket if the walk carries onto Nutfield.
