SUMMARY:Streatham Stroll
DESCRIPTION:NOTE this is Plan B. The original Beckenham and Kelsey Park stroll has been affected by a tram strike\, so Keith has come up  with an attractive alternative.  \nLater update: the tram strike has been called off\, but we’re sticking to the Streatham Stroll. \nMeet at Streatham Station (not Streatham Common or Streatham Hill!) at 7pm for a 7.15 start\, then an easy evening circular amble of about 3 miles to and through the greenery of Streatham Common and The Rookery. \nThere are opportunities for tea stops\, and we’ll finish about 9 at The Bull pub\, where food is an option. \nGetting There\nStreatham Station is on Streatham High Road\, Streatham\, London\, SW16 6HP. There are half-hourly trains from East Croydon (amongst other places)\, and it’s also on bus routes 60\, 159\, 133 and P13.

SUMMARY:Woolwich Dockyards Walk
DESCRIPTION:I will be leading a walk on Sunday 16th June to Woolwich Dockyard. \nWe will meet at East Croydon station at 9.50 to catch the 10:03 East Croydon (platform 4) Thameslink towards Bedford which arrives 10:20 London Bridge. Then we catch the 10:31 from London Bridge (platform 1) to Woolwich Dockyard arriving at 10.50. \nIf you wish to meet at London Bridge or Woolwich Dockyard please let me know. \nI aim that we visit both Woolwich Dockyard and the Woolwich Arsenal during the walk which will take around 4 hours and about 8 km (5 miles). \nIt will be along paved areas and through parks so light walking shoes are fine. \nFor added excitement I am planning that we sail on the Woolwich Ferry to North Woolwich and return via the foot tunnel. \nWe will end up at the Great Harry\, the Wetherspoons pub in Woolwich\, for a late lunch at about 3 pm -so you might like to bring a sandwich to keep you going. \nWe will return from Woolwich Arsenal station to London Bridge\, and then to East Croydon station. \nLet me know if you are going to come along and look forward to seeing you on Sunday 16th! \nCheers \nAndy Thompson \n07751182930 \n

SUMMARY:Trip to Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Update 29th May\nNearly time to go! We currently have 14 intrepid travellers who have booked travel and accommodation. Some are going by train\, some flying from either Gatwick or London City\, and several different places to stay have been booked. \nYou can join us right up to the last minute if you can get the bookings – let me know if you have a sudden craving for currywurst in its native habitat and I can let you know everybody’s plans. \nKen \n\nHere’s a date for your diary: \nWe’re going to Berlin!\nIreen and I are going for a week\, travelling out on Thursday 6th June and back on Thursday 13th. Please join us for all or part of that time. \nWhy Berlin?\nBerlin is a fascinating city and well worth your time. There’s plenty to see and do – historic sites\, museums\, art galleries\, boat trips\, and\, of course\, tremendous nightlife for us youngsters. Not to mention the currywurst. Public transport is excellent and cheap\, though it’s also very walkable and even cyclable\, being mostly flat. \nThere will be a mixture of group\, small group and individual activities\, to be driven by the interests of those going. \nTravel\nAt this point the only arrangement made is our travel. We’re going by train\, which turns out to be one of the more expensive options – Eurostar St Pancras-Brussels\, then Brussels-Cologne-Berlin. Other travel options include bus and plane –  a good reference for travel options is Rome2Rio. As far as my research goes\, weekend travel is the most expensive\, while Thursday less so. \nAccommodation\nTo be arranged. \nIreen and I have made our own arrangements\, with my sister who lives there – very centrally\, near the Cathedral. For the rest of you\, there are many hostels to choose from\, and of course hotels\, AirBnB etc to consider. \nWhat Now?\nPlease let me know if you’re interested in this trip so we can gauge the demand for accommodation etc. More plans will be made! \n  \nKen

SUMMARY:Lake District 5 nights @ Elterwater Hostel
DESCRIPTION:I’m organising a trip to Elterwater Hostel (formerly a YHA hostel\, now independent) in the Lake District in April. I’m planning on staying for 5 nights so as to have 4 whole days up there. Obviously the idea is to get on to them there hills. The Old Man of Coniston (which I haven’t climbed for over 30 years) is nearby\, so it’s a chance for some old men (and women) to climb the Old Man! Maybe also Helvetian. The hostel\, being an ex YH\, is a lovely old building with 6 bedded rooms (about £30 pppn) and twin rooms (about £40 pppn) in a small village with a choice of pubs. \nYou can go by train to Windermere\, then by bus. Car Lifts Full.

SUMMARY:Walk along the Seagull Trail
DESCRIPTION:DON’T FORGET IT’S ON SAT\, SAT\, SATURDAY!\n(ON SUNDAY MORNING YOU CAN HAVE A LIE-IN  WATCHING ALAN TITCHMARSH & MICHAEL PORTILLO ON THE TELLY!) \nAlso a little note to those who have walked this before\, a new route in this part is being used which for about two thirds is completely different! \nSo yes\, Saturday April 6th\, 2024 for Part Five of this route\, picking up from last Spring at Crawley Down\, Sussex (nothing to do with Crawley) to Ardingly village\, a distance of around ten miles of fairly gently undulating topography\,  but likely with plenty of mud as it’s done nothing but RAIN for the last goodness knows how long a time!! Despite what it may say in certain sources\, this is not a 9-5pm day (as in the song!) – don’t expect to be back in Croydon until after 7pm (unless you leave early\, which is an option – see below). \nBy-the-by\, the Industrial In-Action on the railways this long weekend is not due to disrupt the plans at all. As just mentioned you can leave (or join?) at West Hoathly around lunch time or later (on a Metrobus 84) if you have had enough\, or want to explore this village more (there’s an open garden here – the Priest’s House – which some of you have probably visited\, but we probably won’t plan to visit as it costs money to enter and needs time to go round\, so you may want to return privately for this). \nBring along usual food and drink supplies. There is a pot selling place with a cafe along the way\, which we could use if making good time\, but the main stop is West Hoathly village with its Pub\, and churchyard for sandwich eaters. Also a pub at Ardingly in case we have time before the bus. \nAnd the bit you’ve been waiting for\, the Travel stuff! \nMeet at East Croydon Railway Station by 9.30am ‘clock-time’ (and you know why I say that! it’s that crazy time of the year again!) to catch the 9.49am train to Three Bridges (one a little while later too in case this one messes up). From there\, on the opposite side of the road from the station’s main entrance\, we catch one of three different Metrobus services (281 at 10.36\, 272 at 10.46 or 291 at 11.06am…earlier the better) to Crawley Down WAR MEMORIAL stop. \nReturning we catch the Metrobus 272 bus from Ardingly at 6.11pm to Three Bridges where we jump on a train for East Croydon (there is an earlier 272 bus at 5.45pm that goes to Haywards Heath Rail Stn\, and you’d need to pay the extra on the train). \nPaul\, 07968 223589. \n  \nHave I missed anything…probably – ask me anything! Will further check the travel situation as the week wears on\, but the timetables I’ve seen allow for the industrial in-action. \n

It could be completed in about four hours at a moderate pace including a short stop but we would have up to five hours before catching a return bus at 15:34. It is a bit muddy in places but is mostly ok. There are only a couple of moderate hills. There is only one pub on the route but it is less than an hour from the start so bring adequate food and drink. Refreshments are available in Biggin Hill. \nMeet at East Croydon bus station stop E1 by 09:25 to catch the Superloop bus SL5 from stop E1 to Bromley South at 09:33. That is the advertised time but in any case we get the first bus after 09:30. The bus will stop at Elmfield Road which is one stop after Bromley South station because at the moment that stop is closed. We then walk down the High Street to bus stop Z to catch the 320 bus at 10:11 to Biggin Hill\, Lebanon Gardens. The walk starts from Church Road which is next to the swimming pool and library. If anyone wants to drive to Biggin Hill there is a free car park next to the recreation ground. You turn into Church Road from Main Road and the entrance is shortly on the left by a large sign saying ‘Biggin Hill Clinic’. Let me know if you want us to meet you in the car park. Return is 320 bus from stop W at 15:34 (or other time as appropriate) to Bromley South then SL5 to East Croydon. \nBob. \ntel 07982 841121

SUMMARY:Countryside Walk - 7ish miles
DESCRIPTION:Here are details of my countryside walk on Sunday 10 March 2024.  Approx 7 miles (ok maybe 8).  An early (for some) start: \n\nMeet at East Croydon train station ticket hall at 9.15am.  (This will delight Barry.) \n\nWe catch the 9.31am train to Chipstead.   We return later in the day from somewhere further down that line\, sorry not sure which station yet\, so if you don’t want to use Oyster / contactless\, suggest buy a return to Tattenham Corner.   Or if you prefer\, buy a return to Chipstead and a single for the rest at the relevant station later.   (The whole line is in Oyster zone 6.) \n\nWe will walk via the outstanding landscape around Chipstead\, Mugswell\, Colley Hill\, Walton Heath etc.   Do bring some packed refreshments and drink with you as there is no planned indoor lunch stop.  However I will try to include a café and or the Sportsman pub at Mogador – but doubtful there will be room or time to sit and have a proper meal.   We will likely reach our destination and return station around 3.30pm where there may be an opportunity for a more leisurely pub stop.  But don’t bank on it. \n\nSorry if details are a bit sketchy\, left it a bit late to check and my first choice has been thwarted by a rail replacement bus between Purley and Redhill.   That does not impact Tattenham Corner line. \n\nWear boots or wellies in expectation of mud. \n\nRegards \nAndrew \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Walk in Epping Forest
DESCRIPTION:Epping Forest is a large wooded area in NE London\, with plenty of fairly easy walking. \nSo meet at E. Croydon station at 9.20 for the 9.33 train to London Bridge. Then by 149 bus to Liverpool Street station for the Overground to Chingford. (Zone 5) \nFrom there it is a short walk to the ancient Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge\, visitor centre and cafe. Then it will be about a 7 mile circular walk via High Beech (another visitor centre\, cafe\, pub) back to Chingford. \nIt could be quite muddy in places\, so boots may be best. Also bring your own lunch if you don’t want to rely on the cafes etc. \nHope to see you there\, \nBarry \n–

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys - Stroll 2*
DESCRIPTION:We all enjoyed the Pepys Walk on 10th December\, so here’s the second instalment.\nWhere?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time around the streets of the City of London. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.03 East Croydon Platform 2 to Blackfriars\, exiting on the North side\, where the walk starts \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nOutside Blackfrairs Underground  station from our scheduled arrival time about 12.30\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/crazy.ripe.good\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n*I know\, this was originally advertised as a Country Walk. Humble apologies. \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. You can use the links to find any 3-metre square on earth. For best results\, download the App.

SUMMARY:continuing with the London LOOP . . .
DESCRIPTION:Continue from Coulsdon around to Oaks Park\, onward to cross the ‘mad mile’ at Banstead Downs\, and then towards Nonsuch Park & site of Nonsuch Palace\, and possibly as far as Ewell. Potentially as much as 8 miles or so\, with some mud and some suburban pavements. Refreshment possibilities in Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park\, Nonsuch Park\, and perhaps other unexpected places. A chance to leave at Clockhouse (bus)\, Oaks Park (166 bus)\, Banstead (train)\, Ewell East & Cheam (train and bus) and in the possibly unlikely event we get as far as Ewell village it’s the train from Ewell West back to East Croydon\, via Clapham Junction. \nMeet in Coulsdon (get there by many buses from Croydon) outside the Pembroke pub (which opens at 10am so one could have something there first) by 10.35am to set off at 10.45am. (The Pembroke pub (a Wetherspoon-like place) is in central Coulsdon\, just near the start of where the Chipstead Valley Road branches off from Brighton Road and is near a Tesco-Express – we finished by going in there last Sunday.) \nAdventures in store no doubt…as we found last Sunday and other times\, one can never be sure what’s gonna happen while walking the LOOP\, it’s almost enough to send you loopy! \n  \nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589 \n

SUMMARY:London Loop walk: Hamsey Green to Oaks Park
DESCRIPTION:We will be continuing the London LOOP\, picking up from where we left off (last March!!) at Hamsey Green\, and probably get as far as Oaks Park (8 and a half miles). But wherever we stop there are buses back into Croydon. \nJust to remind\, the LOOP is the London Outer Orbital Path which goes around London through the greener parts\, parks\, commons\, etc. and occasional delights of suburbia\, and is around 150 miles in all! \nThe terrain is gently undulating\, with some mud – some places of refreshment en route\, you can leave at Kenley\, Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park. \nTime and place. Meet up at the bus stop outside Fairfield Halls by 10am\, and we’ll take the first 403 bus to Hamsey Green.

No refreshment stops are included in the afternoon. \nTo Wear:\nFingers are crossed for dry weather but please do come clad to keep warm and prepared for any rain forecast nearer the day.\nComfy town footwear should be fine – but not your Sunday best because there will be a couple of leaf-strewn paths that might be a little mucky. \nThe route:\nWill take about three hours at an easy speed\, allowing for observations and comments.\nDistance is about six miles.\nIt will end just into South Croydon.\nWe should be finishing before dusk so there will be no walking on any unlit roads. \nSome specific streets and landmarks will be included. Hopefully\, some interesting information can be gleaned about places we too often just hurry and scurry past. \nIf you are able to enlighten us with your additional knowledge as we go around\, that will be to the benefit of all! \nLooking forward to you all joining me.\nPlease contact me with any queries or if there is any delay in you reaching us on the day. \nMany thanks\,\nIreen (07968 035522)

He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.05 Croydon Platform 1 to Victoria\, then District & Circle line to Westminster. \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nVictoria station from our scheduled arrival time 12.21\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/venue.runner.slurs\n\n\n\n\noutside Westminster underground station\, Victoria Embankment (Exit 2 – statue of Boudicca) from about 12.45\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/manliness.fact.proper\n\n\n\n. \nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. SUMMARY:Reigate Christmas Market (Morning) - Walk in area (Afternoon)
DESCRIPTION:Three events in one. \nIn the morning from 1130 you can shop at Reigate’s Christmas Fayre. \nIn the afternoon at 1315\, please meet Margaret at the Renewed Hope/RDO stall outside Hamptons Estate Agents at 6 Church St for a Linear Walk of 4-5 miles along the Greensand Way to Earlswood via Prior Park and Earlswood Commons. It maybe muddy in places\, so walking boots are recommended. There will be some uphill and downhill sections on the walk. \nPlease have your lunch etc. before starting the the walk and be ready to leave promptly at 13.30. \nTrains leave East Croydon at 10.46 and 11.16\, changing at Redhill. You can also get the 405 bus to Redhill and then another bus to Reigate\, There will be road closures in Reigate for the Fayre\, so parking maybe difficult. \nThe walk will probably finish in Redhill. However please bring Bus/Freedom Passpasses or £2/contactless for a bus ticket if the walk carries onto Nutfield.

SUMMARY:Burning the Sticks Walk
DESCRIPTION:A late addition to the Programme\, following on from the Brockham Bonfire . . . \nI thought it would be good to go to the Burning the Sticks on Brockham Green\, which takes place around the embers of the Bonfire of the night before (which some of us are going to\, of course). \nBest to come via West Croydon down to Dorking Main Rail Stn. Catch the train from WCroy at 10.29am and change at Sutton. I will meet people at Sutton\, but there’s a possibility I may not be able to get on until the train calls at Epsom. \nIf you want to come via Redhill\, there is engineering work involving a bus replacement for part of the way\, but you could do this route if you want. Let me know and we’ll pass the Deepdene Stn on the way to Brockham. \nWe will walk to Brockham a slightly different way from that we follow on Saturday\, given that it will be light. We may well come back a different way\, via Box Hill\, either around the top or base\, depending on time. \nBurning the Sticks will be at around 1pm around the embers of the Bonfire (which some of us will have been at the night before) with Morris Dancing by Rampant Roosters Morris. The pub will be there too and you can bring your own stuff too. \nAbout 7 miles walk\, possibly with a high ascent in the afternoon! \nPaul N/ 07968 223589

SUMMARY:8 mile circular walk from Edenbridge
DESCRIPTION:I am inviting you to drag yourselves away from Croydon for some relatively fresh air in Kent on the above date. I am leading an 8 mile circular walk from Edenbridge Town Railway Station. Catch the 09.23 from East Croydon to Uckfield\, alighting at Edenbridge Town. The fare with Senior Railcard or equivalent is £6\, your Oyster Card only gets you to Woldingham\, I believe you can pay just for the last bit. \nIt’s a very pleasant and scenic route\, with the possibility of a pub stop at the end in the only remaining pub in Edenbridge (the Crown)\, so bring a packed lunch. \ncheers
