SUMMARY:East Grinstead now Not So Circular
DESCRIPTION:This is a stroll of about 8 miles into some interesting countryside around East Grinstead. Some small hills but nothing too taxing\, and we’ll fit in a pub call. \nUpdate 9th September \nAs the heat seems about to continue\, I’ve looked at ways to reduce our exposure on tomorrow’s walk. The one I planned had lots of open country and it occurs to me it would be foolish to expose ourselves that much. \nSo I’ve devised an alternative route that is almost all in shade. Thanks to the late unlamented Dr Beeching the railway line between East Grinstead and Three Bridges is defunct\, and most of it is now a delightfully shaded footpath. \nThis does mean we no longer have a circular route\, and unfortunately you’ll need to buy two separate rail tickets – one to East Grinstead and one back from Three Bridges. Alternatively\, turn back at the halfway point (around Crawley Down). \nThe walk is still 8 miles and has even fewer hills (trains don’t like them). \nNo change to meeting arrangements: \nMeet at East Croydon Station at 10.25\, in time for the 10.39 to East Grinstead (usually platform 6) – or join the train at Sanderstead (10:44) or Riddlesdown (10:47). Arriving East Grinstead at 11.19. \nI’m sure I don’t need to remind seasoned COPSErs about the importance of water\, sunscreen\, hats etc – be careful out there! \nPS \nI’ve failed to find a pub on the way (the one in Crawley Down seems to have encountered its own Beeching Effect) but there is a small Co-op in Crawley Down if you need ready access to drinks and snacks. \n

SUMMARY:Trees4Croydon Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Trees4Croydon initiative runs from 10th June to 15th July. There will be a presentation and full explanation by organiser Sam Baker at the Club Night on Tuesday 13th June.  \n  \nThis will be a 2.5 – 3 hours depending on general pace of the group. \nTrees4Croydon initiative is organised by Croydon Climate Action (previously called Croydon Friends of the Earth). The purpose is to improve local physical and mental well-being by encouraging residents to walk and explore natural surroundings. And\, to help plant new trees in deprived areas around the borough: Thornton Heath; West Croydon e.g. Thornton Heath Recreation Ground and neglected wildlife and wetland area\, near Viridor’s Beddington Lane Incinerator. The trees will be paid for via local business sponsors. Suitable trees will be sourced\, planted and nurtured (for 3 years) by environmental organisations like National Trust. The more walks we complete\, between 10th June and 16th July\, will mean more trees will be planted. For further information: https://www.trees4croydon.com/ \nDate/ time: Sunday 25th June at 11am \nStart Point: Belmont railway station (accessed via West Croydon station (one stop after Sutton) \nStart and finish points are within Zone 6 of the Oyster Travel Card so participants can use Freedom passes\, if necessary. \nWe will cross Banstead Downs then follow a track to Oakes Park. Approx. the halfway point that has a cafe with toilets for those who might need the facilities. We’ll continue through a lavender field\, and some meadows\, then choose another path out to more residential area above Coulsdon\, called The Mount. Despite being close to London\, it is surprisingly rural. \nThe terrain: for the walk will be grassy footpaths and rough stony tracks with three stiles to climb over. However\, it’s not very hilly but has some gentle inclines. Please dress suitably for weather & terrain! \nEnd point: Woodmansterne station. \nThis is on Tattenham Corner line to London Bridge via Purley and East Croydon. Woodmansterne station has a pub nearby\, for refreshments\, or we can continue to Coulsdon\, with more choice. \n\nCOPSE members who want to join Trees4Croydon walk on 25th June can enter their own daily or weekly walking/ cycling miles between 10th June and 16th July on atlasGo app\, under Sustainable Voices Team: \n\n\n\n\n\nDownload the Atlas GO well-being app onto mobile phone – instructions at https://www.trees4croydon.com/participants\nSelect team name (COPSE)\nRegister yourself and details regarding miles completed\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will add to the miles for the Trees4Croydon initiative so more suitable trees are planted in Thornton Heath and West Croydon. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Walk: West Wickham to Hamsey Green (9 miles)
DESCRIPTION:This walk is our next stage of the London Loop: \nWe pick-up where we last left it at West Wickham Common and continue probably to Hamsey Green (which is about 9 miles)\, although if wished could go a little further to Kenley or even The Fox pub\, south of Old Coulsdon. On this stage we shall leave Kent behind us\, and enter Surrey\, and get to about 5.30 o’clock on an imaginary clock face that is the LOOP! \nThe LOOP guide book says [apart from…]: \n“…You can leave [or join?] the route at Coombe Lane tram stop after 4.2 miles\, or at several bus stops [along the way]. \n“Cafes at Hayes\, Coney Hall Village\, and Hamsey Green. Pubs at Shirley Hills\, also Farleigh (half a mile OFF the route). Toilets at Hayes rail stn [which may be closed]. Best picnic opportunities at Addington Hills viewpoint\, and Farleigh Common. \n“Through woodland in the foothills of the North Downs\, [and across] commons. The going is fairly level\, mostly on rough footpaths and on grass\, with two stiles\, however there are some rather steep ascents\, reaching 500 feet or more\, and several long flights of steps [so make sure you’ve had your weetabix!]. You cross the Greenwich Meridian\, enjoy a great view from Addington Hills\, and enjoy the lovely gardens of Heathfield.” \nMeet at East Croydon rail stn FOYER area (as per usual) at 9.45am. At 10 o’clock we will saunter across to the bus stn to catch a 119 bus to Hayes\, getting off near near the rail stn (several each hour). If you join this bus en route come upstairs to make yourselves known\, or if you are coming to Hayes (Station Approach stop) by any other means\, also tell me…you may see why this is important). (And remember NOT Hayes\, Middlesex!!!!) \nAt Hamsey Green we come back to Croydon on a 403 bus (several each hour).(If we go any further then it’ll be either the 407 or 466 buses). \nBring usual food and drink supplies\, etc.

SUMMARY:Walk: Petts Wood to West Wickham Common
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the next stage of the London LOOP (the 150-mile long orbital walk around London though the greener outskirts of the London Boroughs where it meets home counties countryside). \nThis walk will go from Petts Wood to West Wickham Common\, a distance of around10 miles. \nThe guide book to the walk says: \n“…You can leave the route at Farnborough [bus] after 3 miles\, Keston [bus] after 7 miles\, or at several other bus stops\nCafes at Petts Wood and High Elms Park [Bromley Environmental Centre]. Pubs at Farnborough and Keston. Toilets at Petts Wood and High Elms Park. Picnic opportunities at Tubbenden Meadow\, Farnborough\, High Elms C P\, and Keston Ponds… \n.”..The terrain gets quite hilly now\, reaching nearly 560 feet\, mostly on rough footpaths in the foothills of the North Downs\, with one stile. The route passes through several wooded areas\, a country park…commons…and farmland. Keston Ponds is a delightful spot by the source of the River Ravensbourne\, and there are historical associations with the Roman army and the abolition of slavery.” \nSo\, meet at East Croydon station at 9.10am to catch the 9.28am to London VICTORIA. Then get the 9.58am to Petts Wood\, arriving at 10.34am. From the end we will merely catch a 119 bus back to Croydon\, so decide which ticket option is best for you. \nBring usual drink and food\, despite there being some places of refreshment en-route.

SUMMARY:Geeks Transport Tour of London
DESCRIPTION:Join other transport geeks\, enthusiasts and day trippers for a ride on and visit to some of London’s newest transport infrastructure and trains\, with an emphasis on the East.   Naturally transport providers have thwarted some best laid plans through timetable changes and bus replacement.  So unfortunately we won’t be travelling on the shortest rail service in the UK (Upminster to Romford) or travelling direct from Liverpool Street to Barking. \nAssemble 10.30am sharp at East Croydon station ticket hall ready for a 10.42 train to London Bridge.  You are responsible for buying suitable ticket.  Contactless or Oyster  card would be the best. \nIn spite of the disappointment of not visiting Upminster\, we will pass through some lesser used stations (as far as Croydonians are concerned) such as Canon Street and Fenchurch Street.  We will see evidence of multimillion\, ongoing capacity upgrade at Bank station\, travel on two brand new lines including gawping at the River Thames from the upcoming Barking Riverside development and its new station and take a convoluted route (via Wanstead Park / Forest Gate (Elizabeth Line)) to Romford to see what’s there (the Croydon of East London?).  After all that\, we will probably want to rush back to the more familiar central London. \nAt this stage / afternoon there may be other places to go\, trains to see that I have not thought of – do contribute ideas. \nPubs around Covent Garden will be busy with weekend and theatre custom (in fact desired pub is booked out till May) so I plan a conclusion at The Castle\, Farringdon from where people can find their Thameslink way home when they please (“London Terminals” national rail ticket / season is not valid at Farringdon\, so contactless and Oyster is best).   Those who wish may like to have a late afternoon / early evening meal there and if that is the case let me know by Wednesday 15 February so I can try and secure a table(s).

SUMMARY:Walk Crystal Palace to Streatham Common+ Pub Meal
DESCRIPTION:Meet outside Crystal Palace Station from 10.45am (where the coffee stall should hopefully be open). \nWe will walk down to the bottom of Crystal Palace Park for a close look at the “famous” dinosaurs 🦕🦖 + the lake 🏞 (near Penge Gate) where there are public loos + maybe a cafe stop as it normally gets very busy at Sunday lunchtimes. \nWe will then then walk back through the park past the (once) National Sports Centre up to the Crystal Palace Museum (top of Anerley Hill) for about 1pm to meet any “late comers” (staying for about 20 minutes) + then continue the “capital ring” walk to Streatham Common\, the Rookery Gardens with an option to go to “The Bull” pub (on Streatham High Road) for either drinks 🍺🍷☕ or a meal 🍕 🥙 🍟\nwhere there are numerous travel options to get back to Croydon.

SUMMARY:8 mile walk Bletchingley to Oxted + pub meal in Old Oxted
DESCRIPTION:Tim says . . . \nHello copsers \nI am leading a linear walk about 8 miles long on Sunday from Bletchingly to Oxted\, with the option of a meal (including Sunday Roast) in Old Oxted in the late afternoon. \nThe plan is to meet at East Croydon at 9.30 am to catch the 9.39 train to Oxted\, arriving at 10.00. We then catch the 10.28 bus to Bletchingly\, arriving at 10.40 am. We will stop to eat sandwiches en route and aim to arrive at the Old Bell in Old Oxted to eat at about 3.30 pm. If you don’t want to stop\, it’s a short walk to the Railway Station with trains every half hour. \nI need to book tables at the pub as Sunday afternoon is the most popular time for eating\, so please let me know today\, if possible\, if you want to eat. If you don’t tell me in advance then it’s pot luck if you can get food! \nWe walked a bit of the route yesterday\, it is very muddy! \ncheers \nTim

SUMMARY:Local walk around Keston\, High Elms & Downe
DESCRIPTION:This walk will be about 8 miles\, but 6 with a possible short cut depending on conditions. SUMMARY:Post Xmas Walk from Tadworth to Merstham
DESCRIPTION:The walk is roughly 8 miles and involves no uphill sections. We pass the Sportsman Pub in Mogador and the cafe and loos at Reigate Hill. Halfway along there is a great reveal\, where we walk out onto Colley Hill on the North Downs\, with massive views to the South. \nAll of this is dependent on the trains. It’s a linear walk so unsuitable for driving. \nRe the trains\, we can’t be sure of the schedule\, recovering from the earlier planned industrial action\, with “late starting”. \nTo allow for the late starting services\, the plan is to assemble at East Croydon at 10:30 for the timetabled 10:44 to Purley\, then taking the 11:00 to Tadworth. There are two trains to Tadworth per hour. Trains back from Merstham are fast\, taking 12 minutes\, twice an hour\, at 03 and 33. Merstham station will require a ticket to get back into TFL zones. \nIf the trains are totally off\, we can still assemble for 10:30 at East Croydon\, and take an alternative walk via bus.\nThe backup plan is the 403 bus to Hamsey Green\, walk to Coulsdon for the 60 bus back. The route follows the “South London Downs National Nature Reserve” almost all of the way. This option is down and up and up and down\, but still worth the effort. 6 miles\, so shorter but harder work. Meet at East Croydon Station at 10.10 to catch the 10:23 from East Croydon\, 10:45 from Purley\, arrive Tadworth 11:03 \nPlease note Train times to be confirmed. \nReturn trains from Merstham – hourly fast trains at 07 past \n  \n
