SUMMARY:Stonehenge Midsummer Solstice
DESCRIPTION:STONEHENGE AT MIDSUMMER SOLSTICE – JUNE 20TH-21ST WEEKEND\, 2026.\n\n\n\nPLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE FOR THE STONEHENGE MIDSUMMER CELEBRATIONS AND READ IT THROUGH THOROUGHLY AT LEAST TWICE AS THERE ARE MANY CONDITIONS AND DOS AND DON’TS FOR ATTENDING.\n\nSummer Solstice 2026 | English Heritage\n\n\nThe main headlines are that \n1. If you are coming by car you need to book up in advance for parking.\n\n2. You cannot bring any camping equipment with you on the site\, NOT EVEN A SLEEPING BAG. A rug or wrap is allowed. Strictly speaking you are not even allowed to lie down\, but people do\, moreso as you get further away from the Stones.\n\nSo\, should you happen to be attending this on the way back from a stay in the West Country (“just saying”) you need to store your camping etc\, gear somewhere\, i.e.\, in a vehicle\, or perhaps at Salisbury Station. I leave you to make all these arrangements YOURSELF please.\n\nLast year I went to this\, and the weather was fine and warm\, not a drop of rain in sight. BUT I imagine if the weather is not so good\, it may not be entirely pleasurable to be there – it depends what you are used to. So please think about what it may be like to stay awake all night in drizzle and coolness. If the forecast is really bad I MYSEL:F will not go.\n\nI don’t wish to put the Fear of Thor into you and put you off coming\, but you need to imagine what it may be like at Stonehenge under different weather conditions!! (with no tent or proper sleeping bag with you)\n\n\nThe Oak and the Ash have been coming out about the same time this year\, which may indicate some rainy spells this Summer\, if you believe the old country saying…\n\nMy plan: Last year I got there late in the evening\, and stayed until ‘late’ish’ (about 7.30am GMT or BST I can’t recall!) in the morning. By the time I got there it was dark and I was bumping into and tripping over the stones and when I put my hand out to touch a stone I found I was touching a person!!  It was noisy and crowded. I lay down and rested near the stones with people climbing over me – by the time of sunrise I had rather forgotten what I was there for\, and which stone to look through for the sunrise. I then hung around for a few hours\, and then joined a long\, long queue for the special bus back to Salisbury Rail Stn (at least two hours in the queue – it’s all a bit hazy by now). The bus back to Bournemouth (where I was staying) took some three hours owing to traffic\, likely because of road works. This last bit was NOT due to Stonehenge\, of course\, but added to the strange day. (I then managed to catch a train to Wareham for a multiple garden open day there in the afternoon!)\n\n\n\n\nTHE PLAN FOR THE WEEKEND\nSO THIS YEAR I want to do things the other way around: Get there early while it’s still light\, and have some time to explore around the stones before it gets dark (might be quieter too!). Then retire to quite a distance from the stones (as it’s possible to do) to rest and doze through until the early hours. At sunrise (around 3.40am GMT) I shall  be back at the stones. And then I shall leave quite soon (the bus service back to Salisbury starts VERY EARLY)\, despite possible temptations to linger on in the atmosphere. Back at Salisbury I shall either go home\, go to Bournemouth on the bus (if that’s where I’m staying)\, or possibly – if there’s any life left in me –  go and explore a bit of the city. Sometimes you get a second wind after a poor night’s sleep.\n\nSo that’s my intention. If anyone else wants to do anything differently then please do so\, and we can try and meet up using the wonders of modern technology.\n\nIf the conditions are good this is quite a thing to go to and you can walk amongst the stones of Stonehenge – there’s some so-called Pagan drumming and chanting going on within the stones too! It’s free to enter\, but getting there (and I imagine parking a car) is expensive. Bear in mind this is the last time the Summer Solstice falls at a weekend for some years\, probably until the early 2030s (although it takes place every year\, of course\, whatever day it is).\n\nJust be aware of all possibilities and bring a sense of Humour (and maybe flowers in your hair!).\nAlso good to bring your own food and flask. There are stalls selling food and drink (which I didn’t use last year)\, which will have queues.\nThere are loads of portaloos available.\n\n\nGETTING THERE\n\nI shall appoint a meeting time in the early evening outside Salisbury Rail Stn for anyone coming at that time. I may or may not have been in the City for part or all of the Saturday to explore around\, I haven’t decided yet and may not know until much closer to the time.\n\nA email much nearer the time will give a meeting time (around 6-7pm) outside Salisbury Rail stn on the evening of Saturday June 20th (Midsummer Even) – the Solstice is not until 8.24am GMT on Sunday June 21st\, BUT THE MAIN EVENT HERE IS THE SUNRISE THROUGH AND OVER THE STONEHENGE\, some hours before that at – yes – sunrise.\n\nSO UNTIL THEN PLEASE GO STUDY THE WEBSITE and see what you think. (The special bus service timetable has not appeared yet\, but will do shortly\, I’m sure. DON’T CONFUSE THIS SPECIAL CHARGED BUS SERVICE FROM SALISBURY TO STONEHENGE VISITOR’S CENTRE WITH THE FREE SHUTTLE BUS LAID ON BETWEEN THE VISITOR CENTRE AND THE STONES (FOR THOSE NOT WANTING TO WALK OVER TO THE STONES (about a mile or so) ).\n\n\n\nPaul

SUMMARY:Loop walk - Harold Wood to Hornchurch
DESCRIPTION:(LOOP* between Harold Wood and Hornchurch Country Park)\n\nOh deer\, it hardly seems 4 weeks since we were mingling with the Deer of Harold Wood (yes\, it does refer to King Harold!)\, and now we are ready to continue onwards with the LOOP\, this time with a visit to Upminster Windmill which has open days this coming weekend (May 9th-10th\, to clarify)! \n\nHeading now southwards through the gently undulating green valley of the Ingrebourne river as it flows Thamesward and entering Hornchurch Country Park. Along the way – before the Windmill – is the Upminster Tithe Barn\, not currently open to the public but worth a look at the outside of which we can make a short detour so to do.\n\nWe will go as far as the Discovery Centre at the beginning of Hornchurch Country Park\, about 8 miles (including the extra bits). You can return home early from Upminster Bridge or Upminster on the District Line (before or after visiting the Windmill). Otherwise at the finish we catch a 252 bus from near the Hornchurch Park Discovery Centre to either Elm Park on the District Line or stay on further to Romford stn (whichever way you think will work out quicker\, but it’s probably all ‘swings and roundabouts’ and I’ll probably get off for Elm Park on the District Line).\n\nUpminster Windmill Open Day: Cost £6 (kids £2) and includes the sails turning at various times\, and some Morris Dancing. You don’t HAVE to take part in the windmill part if you really don’t want to (especially if you’re Mr Trump!). I believe the grounds are free and it’s only the actual windmill that is chargeable\, or there’s The Windmill pub on the way to the Windmill\, funnily enough. Just to note that you have to be at least 1m high to visit the Windmill – I think we all just about qualify for that! (Presumably that’s to stop babies visiting??\, so please leave your babies at home!) For more details on the Upminster Windmill Open Days\, use our friend ‘Mr Google’ (other search engines are available\, as they say).\n\nBring food and beverage\, but refreshment opportunities en route and at the Windmill\, and at the end.\n\nHow to get here \n\nCatch the 10.01am BST train from East Croydon Rail Stn (Platform 2) to arrive at Harold Wood precisely 1hr 14  mins later\, hopefully anyway. Life is not that simple\, of course\, and you must  change at Farringdon onto the Elizabeth Line towards Shenfield\, getting off at Harold Wood. I am aiming to be at East Croydon in the usual entrance foyer spot to meet up. (If there are any problems at my end\, one of you will hear from me by phone.) \n\nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589\n\n(no emails on the day\, they won’t get picked up till Sunday!)\n\n\n*LOOP means London Outer Orbital Path\, a 150 mile long trail around the edge of London taking in woods\, meadows\, rivers\, parkland and even the occasional road. We are nearing the end of this particular 3.5 year run later this year (at least that’s what I’m under the impression of!)\, but it’s never too late to join in!!!\n\nGuidance on Walking\, Cycling and Camping – Croydon Outdoor Pursuits & Social Events Club

SUMMARY:Captions & Kit
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nThis Tuesday we can test our wit and part with some kit – or purchase a bargain\, perhaps!  Our evening will be a sociable session to study and title a selection of COPSE photos\, plus the chance to contribute to the charity COPSE appropriately supports.   The “photos bit” is usually rather amusing and the “kit bit” is an opportunity to boost our Club fund for the charity described below\, with an illustration of the sort of equipment that the organisation provides. \nThe choice of sharing a percentage of any ££s that your items bring in\, or of donating fully\, is entirely yours.  You have the weekend ahead to decide – and to find the things that you could manage your home better without! \nYou  could send me advance photos of anything you might like to offer for sale – or post them yourself\, if you’re happy to.  If you have an item that is too bulky to bring to the hall\, I could quite likely arrange transport / collection of it for a purchaser\, in the near future.  Please come back to me with any queries. \nWhy support ShelterBox? \nWith over 25 years of experience\, we are experts in emergency shelter after disaster. We often work in places that others don’t\, making sure that we reach families who need support to take the next step in resuming their livelihoods. \nFrom Cameroon to Syria\, all the way to the Philippines and the Caribbean\, we have provided shelter to over 3 million people so far. And in these uncertain times\, your support is more valuable than ever. \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522)

SUMMARY:St Georges Day - Trafalgar Square
DESCRIPTION:The celebration\nThe Day is a celebration organized by the London Mayor and is a free event in Trafalgar Square running from 12.00 to 6.00. There will be live music\, dancing\, workshops . crafts and food stalls. The last act last year was a five-piece folk band with a caller and dancing in the square attended by some of the Chelsa pensioners who were really joining in.\n\n www.london.gov.uk/events/st-georges-day-2026\n\nAfter the celebration\nAfter the event we can go for a meal in Chinatown or go to the Hippodrome which is a really interesting place to visit with the history of its various incarnations over the years from the Talk of the Town\, Stringfellows to its current use. There is a very good Chinese restaurant in the basement which I would like to try.\nI am not intending we will go for the full six hours but for the second half of the afternoon.\n\nWhere to meet\nMeeting Time : 2.00 at East Croydon. We will get a train to Charing Cross and head straight to Trafalgar Square. The forecast is not looking great at the moment but hopefully will change.\n\n\nWilliam E

SUMMARY:Capital Ring Walk 7 - Richmond to Osterley Lock
DESCRIPTION:Continuing to be inspired by Paul’s assault on the Loop\, and encouraged by the enthusiastic turnout for Parts 1 to 6\, I’m continuing the Capital Ring circuit – we’re about half-way now! \nNewbies can click on the map above to see what the Capital Ring is all about. \nThis leg is a stroll of about 5 miles\, mostly on paved surfaces and with no big hills – described as one of the easiest sections\, with the most riverside walks. It would be foolish to totally rule out mud\, but it shouldn’t be a major concern unless we have a lot of rain. \nThere are plenty of feeding and toilet opportunities along the way\, and there are pub options at the end\, yet to be investigated. \nSpecial Bonus Feature\nTime and willingness permitting\, we’ll pay a visit to the highly recommended Boston Manor House. Entry is free and it’s open till 5pm. \nFrom their website: \n“A Jacobean House built for Lady Mary Reade in 1623 and later owned by the Clitherow family from the 1670s until the 1920s. It is now open to the public from Tuesday – Sunday every week. The beautifully restored historic interiors\, including breathtaking original ornate plasterwork\, are joined by two community exhibition galleries\, meeting rooms and an attractive modern café.” \nWe finish at Osterley Lock\, from where the best way back to Croydon appears to involve a Piccadilly Line train from Boston Manor. Our on-walk transport experts can further advise\, I’m sure. \nJoining Opportunities\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11am .\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\nOutside Richmond Station\, from our scheduled arrival about 12.25\nhttps://w3w.co/crash.cook.lines\n\n\n\nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Loop Walk - Chigwell Row to Harold Wood
DESCRIPTION:Continuing the LOOP* this SUNDAY\, picking up from where we left at Chigwell Row\, and continuing on through the pleasantly undulating Essex countryside with two spectacular views into the City and Docklands area (looking rather like the Emerald City in Wiz of Oz!). We pass historical remains and sites and walk through an avenue of Victorian-times planted Wellingtonia trees (Sequoia) which will make you think you are in California! The ground is drying up nicely – so my spies tell me – so there’s no need to bring a boat along with you. Just as you think we seem to be heading east for a long time\, we will lurch southwards at last to follow river/river valleys which will eventually lead us back to the Thames later this year… \n\nThere’s an opportunity to leave or join after about 4 miles by being directed to a bus service to Romford rail stn – anyone seriously wanting to JOIN at this point should speak to me privately and should know how to follow a map please (as I’m sure you all do!).\n\nNOW FOR AN IMPORTANT ASPECT\, deciding how far to walk this time. If we go all the way to Harold Wood rail stn the distance is reckoned to be around 10 miles or so. But it can be reduced to around 8 miles if we stop at a well-serviced bus stop on Noak Hill Road (taking a bus to Harold Wood stn). By some pleasant happenstance there is a nice looking pub called the Deer’s Rest (listed on the internet as being in Romford\, but is really on the outskirts of Harold Wood!) at this bus stop\, so – “just saying” – one could stop there for whatever comes to mind. I don’t mind what we do and will keep going till I’m the last person walking…sunset is at 6.51pm\, so that’s no problem and the last bit is on streets\, anyway. Whatever we don’t do this time we will do next time and it’ll all work out fine in the end\, and there are possible advantages to each decision\, as with much of life…\n\nSo\, I would like you to think about how far you want to go on the LOOP this time: stop at Noak Hill Road\, or go all the way to Harold Wood rail stn\, which will be quite a plod? You can make your comments to me\, either generally or in secret. I realise\, of course\, that much may depend on how things go on the day.\n\nFood and Beverages\nPlease bring food and beverage\, but along the way there is a part-time kiosk on a golf course\, another part-time kiosk in Central Park\, Harold Wood (if we get that far this time)\, a pub called the Royal Oak recently opened under new management at Havering-atte-Bower which does breakfast all day (!)…and\, of course the Deer’s Rest\, as mentioned above. Apart from the two pubs\, there are no ‘official’ toilets on the route (possibly some in the parks at the end\, if still open) BUT if you are busting we could arrange for people to make a diversion while we wait to toilets in Hainault Forest Country Park\, which we go through part of quite early on (map will be supplied for toilets!).\n\nWhatever happens\, this will be a long day\, so no Tina Turner concerts\, Lectures or Candle-Lit Dinners with Mrs Bucket  to get back to please…[that should be “Bouquet”\, if you please!]\n\n\nTRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS (in case you thought I’d forgotten!):\n\nPlease catch the 9.33am train from East Croydon which arrives at London Bridge for 09:50\n(IMPORTANT NOTE: I cannot get to E Croy for the meet-up\, so will intercept you along the route\, phoning up people I think may be on the walk (so switch your phone off if you’re staying in bed!!). If you want to make a private arrangement to meet anybody at E Croy\, to go to Chigwell Row with company\, then please do so directly with them.\nSuggested meeting time for those travelling from East Croydon is 09: 17.\n\nYou may use the toilets at London Bridge if you must as I don’t believe there are any official toilets for some time\,  changing as swiftly as you can please onto the Jubilee Line to Stratford\, and then as swiftly as possible onto the Central Line to Hainault (slight possibility of having to change trains at Newbury Park\, just stay on same platform). At Hainault come out of the station\, turn right down the main road\, cross road at ped crossing and catch the 150 bus to Chigwell Row\, getting off at the LAST STOP please as it makes it easier to cross this busy road at ped lights\, and so begin our LOOPy journey…\n\n\n*The LOOP (London Outer Orbital Path) is a 150-mile long foot trail around the outskirts of Greater London\, linking together rivers\, floods\, woodland\, meadowland\, parkland\, previous dwellings of Queen Elizabeth I\, suburban streets\, Wetherspoons\, and occasional flocks of deer.\n\nPaul N\n07968 223589\n\nGuidance on Walking\, Cycling and Camping – Croydon Outdoor Pursuits & Social Events Club

SUMMARY:Lesnes Abbey (Bexley) and Green Chain Walk to Woolwich
DESCRIPTION:Lesnes Abbey Wood is a park and woodland set in a sea of housing estates in Abbey Wood in the London Borough of Bexley\, south east London. This is somewhere I had never previously visited.\n \nIts attractions boast the following:\nHistoric abbey ruins and monks gardens.\nA viewpoint of the City from South-east London.\nWoodlands with wild flowers (and lots of bluebells yesterday).\nFossil hunting opportunities.\nAn arboretum.\nA kiosk that sells hot drinks and hot and cold sandwiches if you do not want to bring a packed lunch.\nToilets! \nAfter lunch and during the afternoon there will be a pleasant walk from Lesnes Abbey to Woolwich (under 2 hours) along the Green Chain Walk across:\nBostall Heath\nBostall Woods\nGreat Bartlett’s Woods\nWinn Common\nPlumstead Common (where there is a cafe and pub)\,\nthen into central Woolwich for a cafe and/or a pub before returning home. \nThose who would prefer not to join this walk can return via Abbey Wood rail station to London Bridge or take the Elizabeth line to Farringdon station\, and rail to East Croydon. \nThe going is generally flat and along good paths through woodland but there are a couple of short steep hills along the route from Lesnes Park to Woolwich which will require care\, and a couple of busy local roads to cross. \nFootwear: If its dry then good walking shoes are fine. If its wet I suggest boots. \n\nWhere to meet\nWe meet at East Croydon at 9.35 am to catch the 9.51(pl 2) train to London Bridge and from there the 10.18 train to Abbey Wood station that arrives at 10.47.\nLesnes Abbey is a 10 minute walk from Abbey Wood station. \nTrains come back from Woolwich Arsenal rail station to London Bridge and then to East Croydon\, or you can catch the Elizabeth Line to Farringdon from Woolwich station and then rail to East Croydon. \nThe current weather forecast is sunny with a slight (less than 30%) chance of rain. \nI look forward to seeing you!\nAndy\n07751182930 \n  \nGuidance on Walking\, Cycling and Camping – Croydon Outdoor Pursuits & Social Events Club
