SUMMARY:Manor Crafts and Leftover Currency Launch
DESCRIPTION:Many of the participants in our highly enjoyable group visits to The Manor Resort in Okehampton- whether the one a couple of weeks ago or the one we did last year – were pleased with and proud of their endeavours in the many varieties of craft workshops. \nThis evening event is a chance for them to show off and perhaps explain their achievements\, and for all of us to admire their efforts\, in a relaxed social setting. \nLeftover Currency Launch\nThis evening will also see the launch of our Leftover Currency initative in aid of Mary’s Meals\, the charity who visited us on 25th August and impressed us greatly with their programmes to feed hungry children around the world. \nDo you have unwanted money left over from foreign holidays and gathering dust at home?  Many of us do\, and collectively we can probably realise a decent amount. Make a simple impact on the lives of children by bringing it along to the club to fill our collection box. Obsolete money is also welcome. There’s no need to sort it by country or anything\, just put it in the box. \nIf your collection is too enormous to carry to the Club we can probably arrange pickup – just ask Ken. \nThey will accept: \n\nNotes\nCoins\nForeign or UK\nObsolete\, eg French Francs\, Spanish Pesetas\nOut-of-date UK\, eg large 10p\n\nWe’ll continue collecting until the end of the year\, when hopefully we’ll be able to make a significant donation.

SUMMARY:London Loop - Hornchurch Country Park to Purfleet\, via Rainham.
DESCRIPTION:Time to pick-up from where we left off back in May! as we continue this 150 mile odyssey around the outskirts of London through parks\, woods\, suburbs and along rivers. It’s never too late to join…but you’d better hurry up (see later!)\n\nWe go from Hornchurch Country Park Discovery Centre/Cafe to Purfleet – about 8 miles or so\, including a Hill with a View. A chance to drop out at Rainham (Essex). Terrain otherwise is reasonably flat.\n\nIncludes an optional visit to Rainham Hall\, £6.50/(children £3.25)  (National Trust members free)\nOR you can\, I believe\, use their cafe without visiting the property.\n\nThen it’s down along the Thames (not the actual Thames Path which is on the south bank) with a little military and heritage museum (free)\, which may be open\, along the way\, and a cafe at the RSPB reserve Visitor Centre outside Purfleet. Pubs in Rainham and\, I believe\, at the end.\n\nOh dear\, this is\, again I believe (but one can never be absolutely sure!) the end of this ‘running’ of the LOOP\, as we have come all the way around from Erith on the south bank of the Thames since early 2023. It’s probably time to give it a rest for the next period of years\, and go and walk the Great Wall of China\, or something…\n\nBUT BUT BUT if anyone has missed a section and wants to walk it privately\, or with COPSE (either on the programme or ad hoc when there is a gap in the programme) then of course they can do so\, either with or without me! (but I can be an advisor). I leave that hanging in the air…\n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, meet at East Croydon Rail Stn at 9.00am BST (a bit of an early start  – particularly by GMT – but probably worth it for a relaxed day in the end).\n\nWe catch a Thameslink to London Bridge (15 or 21 past the hour would be good)\, Jubilee Line to West Ham\, District Line to Hornchurch Metro\,\nthen a 252 bus to Hornchurch CP (every 10-12 mins\, takes a few minutes).\n\nWe travel mostly in zone 6…but for the journey home from Purfleet this station is in a bit of a grey area as regards TFL zones BUT you CAN use Oyster pay-as-you-go from here back into London. So I’ll leave you to inquire about how this affects your ticket. Rainham (Essex) is the next station stop towards London and IS in Zone 6\, but\, of course\, we stay on the train (so this is to bear in mind if you need to touch with an Oyster card…this is far less complicated than it may sound\, it’ll all fall into place on the day!!).\n\nPaul N (no emails on the day please)\nTel. 07968 223589

SUMMARY:Croydon Pub Social
DESCRIPTION:Quite a few COPSE members will be away at The Manor this week\, so there WON’T be a club night at the Church Hall tonight. \nConsequently\, for those interested\, I’m organising  a “Central Croydon Pub Crawl” 🍺🍷🍸 🍵\, where the plan is as follows => \n1) from 7pm to 8.30pm (approx) \n“The Spread Eagle” pub in Katherine Street\, and because there’s live football on TV I’ve already booked  two tables (4 + 5) at the back by the window for those wanting a meal. SUMMARY:Croydon Night of Dance
DESCRIPTION:After so many of us enjoyed last year’s extravaganza – mostly watching the experts\, with beer in hand\, but some occasionally being enticed into the fray – we’re gathering again for an entertaining time. \n“Join us on Tuesday 8th September for a night of music\, mirth and magic as a multitude of Morris maids and men do mingle and make merry at our Night Of Dance.” \nLast year’s frolics \nSpot the COPSE people!\n\n \nOrganised by the North Wood Morris Men\, this event will showcase other traditional dance teams\, taking in the Oval and Builders Arms pubs and points in between. \nMore details to be released when available. \nWhere to meet?\nYou can arrive at any time\, and we expect to move around a bit during the evening\, but we’ll start by assembling in the vicinity of the Oval Tavern from about 7.30 to 8.00.  \n&

SUMMARY:Green Spaces Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone\n\nI will be leading the FINAL Croydon Green Spaces Walk on Sunday 6th September.\n\nThis will be covering the green spaces we have not previously visited in Purley\, Kenley and Coulsdon.\nIt seems very urban but its a surprisingly “green” route and many of the places I had never visited before.\n\nWhere\nMeet outside Tesco’s bus stop in Godstone Road (opposite the Jolly Farmers pub) at 10.30am.\n\nFrom here we will be walking down the Godstone Road and turn up Foxley Hill Road and into Foxley Woods and a footpath that takes us up to the Wattenden pub for our lunch stop. We then walk to Old Coulsdon and through woods and across Coulsdon Manor Golf course and via Coulsdon Woods to end our walk in Coulsdon town centre where there is a pub and cafes.\n\nIts about 7 miles in total so not a long walk and we can stop for ice creams at Grange Park in Old Coulsdon\, and at the Manor at the golf course for toilets and refreshments along the way and I aim to get to Coulsdon town between 4.30 to 5pm.\n\nThere are plenty of buses and trains from Coulsdon at the end of the route.\n\nWhat to bring:\nDecent footwear such as good walking shoes or boots if its been wet and likely muddy as we go along some steep tracks.\nBring water if it is a hot day.\nFood and drinks are available at the pub and shops at Old Coulsdon.\n\nGuidance on Walking\, Cycling and Camping – Croydon Outdoor Pursuits & Social Events Club\n\nI look forward to seeing you all!\nAndy\n07751182930

SUMMARY:Bike ride - Horsham to Croydon
DESCRIPTION:Hi all.  I am leading a cycle ride on Sunday 30 August.  It will involve going out by train to Horsham and cycling back to Croydon.  Meet at East Croydon booking hall at 8.55am sharp.  (Or join train at later stations\, see below.)  Preferable already with your ticket.\n\nIt will be possible to avoid cycling the whole route back to Croydon by catching a train from somewhere on the line between Horsham and Croydon.  (e.g. Merstham)  You should adopt a flexible and patient attitude.  The precise route back to Croydon will not be known until we are underway.   Therefore it is not possible to say how long the ride will be.  Having said that\, I aspire to come back over Farthing Downs and likely a fair bit of Brighton Road from Coulsdon north (rail geek pun).   The whole route would likely be between 30 and 40 miles.  We have the whole day.  Few big hills!\n\nBring some food / snacks and plenty of drink to keep you going.  We will hope for a cafe or pub stop or stops along the way but a full pub meal cannot be guaranteed.\n\nGetting there\nThe train I intend to catch is the 9.12 Thameslink service to Horsham (arriving 10.06).  This is a slow stopping service but the benefit is the generous space on such a train for lots of cyclists.  Cos obvs I’m expecting  hoard!  The disadvantage is it only hourly.  Bring a packed breakfast / coffee!?\n\nThe train will call at these intermediate stations:  Purley 9.17; Cousldon South 9.21; Redhill 9.31; Gatwick Airport 9.44.\n\nAs it is a Thameslink service\, don’t buy the ‘Advance Single’ for use only on Southern trains.  I suggest buying an anytime single which is £17.60 or get a third off with a suitable railcard.\n\nThe cycle will be predominantly on road.  Or off road tracks with a firm cycling surface such as a bit of the ‘Downs Link’.   So very narrow tyres will be uncomfortable.\n\nLook forward to seeing you.\nAndrew\n07985 936953

SUMMARY:UCL 200 year exhibition and St Pancras and Somers Town
DESCRIPTION:UCL 200 year exhibition and S Pancras and Somers Town visit Saturday 8th August \nHi everyone. \nWhere do we go?\nFirst we will visit University College London (UCL) in Bloomsbury.\nYou will see the 200 years anniversary exhibition and have a short tour of the campus including a quick visit to the Grant zoological collection and after that a stop for coffee and a lunch at the Gordon Square gardens cafe.\nThey sell beverages\, sandwiches and light snacks or bring your own lunch. \nThen we will visit the nearby St Pancras “New” church and a visit to the crypt art galley. \nFrom here we cross Euston Road and a short walk through Somers Town (which is located between Euston and St Pancras Stations north of Euston Road).\nSomers Town was reputed to have the worst slums in London until slum clearance during the early 1900’s.\nWe might be able to visit the tiny Somers Town museum (if its open!– I was told it was\, but it turned out to be shut last Saturday) on our way past 1920’s to 1950’s social housing estates to visit the “Old” St Pancras Church and very interesting churchyard. \nFinally we walk round the corner to the lovely Camley Street Natural Park which borders the Regents Canal which has refreshments and food and nice toilets!\nFrom here we are a few minutes from St Pancras Station and the Thameslink trains back to East Croydon. \nWhat do I bring?\nWater.\nFood for your lunch if you like.\nNo special walking footwear are required.\nA hat or brolly if its going to be hot or rainy.\nThe current forecast shows good weather. \nWhere do we meet?\nEast Croydon Station at 9.30 am on Saturday 8th August. \nI look forward to seeing you all!\nAndy

SUMMARY:COPSE at the BBC Proms 2026 - Mon 27 July
DESCRIPTION:Hi\n\nHere is the information about this year’s BBC Proms concert I have chosen for COPSE.\n\nIt’s on Monday 27 July starting at the earlier time of 7.00pm at the Royal Albert Hall.  The programme includes Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony presented by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.  Full details here: Proms 2026 Calendar – By Date – BBC\n\nTo claim one of 12 tickets\, contact me soon as.    Once we have established contact I will inform you how to pay me.\n\nThis year I procured the tickets a different way.  Online instead of in person.  This means I am limited to buying twelve tickets. (It also means I don’t yet have paper tickets.  They are due to be sent to me nearer the event.  This could be awkward as it means less time to distribute them.)  If you are unlucky in not being able to claim one of these I share below the details of where we are sitting and how you can get your own ticket near us.  (All being well.)\n\nI have gone for a little pricier tickets this year.  Not quite the back row of the “Rausing Circle”.   They work out at £29 each.\n\nTo book your own ticket\, visit Proms 2026 From the Alps to the Auvergne – BBC Proms – BBC\n\n\nThe Proms start next Friday\, 17 July.\n\nThanks and regards\nAndrew
