DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone\n\nI will be leading the FINAL Croydon Green Spaces Walk on Sunday 6th September.\n\nThis will be covering the green spaces we have not previously visited in Purley\, Kenley and Coulsdon.\nIt seems very urban but its a surprisingly “green” route and many of the places I had never visited before.\n\nWhere\nMeet outside Tesco’s bus stop in Godstone Road (opposite the Jolly Farmers pub) at 10.30am.\n\nFrom here we will be walking down the Godstone Road and turn up Foxley Hill Road and into Foxley Woods and a footpath that takes us up to the Wattenden pub for our lunch stop. We then walk to Old Coulsdon and through woods and across Coulsdon Manor Golf course and via Coulsdon Woods to end our walk in Coulsdon town centre where there is a pub and cafes.\n\nIts about 7 miles in total so not a long walk and we can stop for ice creams at Grange Park in Old Coulsdon\, and at the Manor at the golf course for toilets and refreshments along the way and I aim to get to Coulsdon town between 4.30 to 5pm.\n\nThere are plenty of buses and trains from Coulsdon at the end of the route.\n\nWhat to bring:\nDecent footwear such as good walking shoes or boots if its been wet and likely muddy as we go along some steep tracks.\nBring water if it is a hot day.\nFood and drinks are available at the pub and shops at Old Coulsdon.\n\nGuidance on Walking\, Cycling and Camping – Croydon Outdoor Pursuits & Social Events Club\n\nI look forward to seeing you all!\nAndy\n07751182930

SUMMARY:Bike ride -  Horsham to Croydon
DESCRIPTION:Hi all.  I am leading a cycle ride on Sunday 30 August.  It will involve going out by train to Horsham and cycling back to Croydon.  Meet at East Croydon booking hall at 8.55am sharp.  (Or join train at later stations\, see below.)  Preferable already with your ticket.\n\nIt will be possible to avoid cycling the whole route back to Croydon by catching a train from somewhere on the line between Horsham and Croydon.  (e.g. Merstham)  You should adopt a flexible and patient attitude.  The precise route back to Croydon will not be known until we are underway.   Therefore it is not possible to say how long the ride will be.  Having said that\, I aspire to come back over Farthing Downs and likely a fair bit of Brighton Road from Coulsdon north (rail geek pun).   The whole route would likely be between 30 and 40 miles.  We have the whole day.  Few big hills!\n\nBring some food / snacks and plenty of drink to keep you going.  We will hope for a cafe or pub stop or stops along the way but a full pub meal cannot be guaranteed.\n\nGetting there\nThe train I intend to catch is the 9.12 Thameslink service to Horsham (arriving 10.06).  This is a slow stopping service but the benefit is the generous space on such a train for lots of cyclists.  Cos obvs I’m expecting  hoard!  The disadvantage is it only hourly.  Bring a packed breakfast / coffee!?\n\nThe train will call at these intermediate stations:  Purley 9.17; Cousldon South 9.21; Redhill 9.31; Gatwick Airport 9.44.\n\nAs it is a Thameslink service\, don’t buy the ‘Advance Single’ for use only on Southern trains.  I suggest buying an anytime single which is £17.60 or get a third off with a suitable railcard.\n\nThe cycle will be predominantly on road.  Or off road tracks with a firm cycling surface such as a bit of the ‘Downs Link’.   So very narrow tyres will be uncomfortable.\n\nLook forward to seeing you.\nAndrew\n07985 936953

DESCRIPTION:UCL 200 year exhibition and S Pancras and Somers Town visit Saturday 8th August \nHi everyone. \nWhere do we go?\nFirst we will visit University College London (UCL) in Bloomsbury.\nYou will see the 200 years anniversary exhibition and have a short tour of the campus including a quick visit to the Grant zoological collection and after that a stop for coffee and a lunch at the Gordon Square gardens cafe.\nThey sell beverages\, sandwiches and light snacks or bring your own lunch. \nThen we will visit the nearby St Pancras “New” church and a visit to the crypt art galley. \nFrom here we cross Euston Road and a short walk through Somers Town (which is located between Euston and St Pancras Stations north of Euston Road).\nSomers Town was reputed to have the worst slums in London until slum clearance during the early 1900’s.\nWe might be able to visit the tiny Somers Town museum (if its open!– I was told it was\, but it turned out to be shut last Saturday) on our way past 1920’s to 1950’s social housing estates to visit the “Old” St Pancras Church and very interesting churchyard. \nFinally we walk round the corner to the lovely Camley Street Natural Park which borders the Regents Canal which has refreshments and food and nice toilets!\nFrom here we are a few minutes from St Pancras Station and the Thameslink trains back to East Croydon. \nWhat do I bring?\nWater.\nFood for your lunch if you like.\nNo special walking footwear are required.\nA hat or brolly if its going to be hot or rainy.\nThe current forecast shows good weather. \nWhere do we meet?\nEast Croydon Station at 9.30 am on Saturday 8th August. \nI look forward to seeing you all!\nAndy

DESCRIPTION:Both walkers and cyclists will start by meeting near the War Memorial\, outside Croydon Central Library on Katharine Street. \nMeet from 2pm for departure at 2.10pm \nWalkers will enjoy a suburban ramble\, taking in the last day of the “Art Trail” around Croydon. The route passes some interesting places and takes us through a public park.  (Boots not needed\, just comfy walking shoes + an en route drinks bottle.) \nCyclists will enjoy a relaxed ride that takes in Croydon’s outer areas of parkland\, ponds and open views across some downs. (There will be a rest / refreshment stop but bring en route drinks.) \nAbout 5pm\, both walkers and cyclists will meet again when they finish\, just inside South Croydon\, for free coffees / teas and cake! \n

DESCRIPTION:We’ve moved this walk to the Sunday as Saturday is expected to be really hot! \nHello all\, \nIt will be a downland walk\, going through Bishopstone village and over the the downs to Litlington where there are tea gardens and the Plough & Harrow pub. Then along the South Downs Way via Westdene to Cuckmere Haven\, from where there is a bus back to Seaford. \nIt will be a hilly walk of about 8 miles. Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and sun cream as it will be still quite warm\, but there is a possibility of rain late afternoon. \nSo meet at E. Croydon station 8.45 with a return ticket to Seaford £19.80 with railcard. \nThen we get the 9.02 to Lewes\, changing there for the 10.06 to Seaford. Should you wish to participate\, you will need to select two of your favorite music pieces. They can be popular\, classical\, jazz or whatever your preference is. The idea is to give a brief talk to explain why you like the particular piece and if it has any personal connection to you before playing it\,  We will stream one piece and if time allows stream both choices.
