SUMMARY:Follow Pissaro's steps in Norwood
DESCRIPTION:Camille Pissarro\, father of Impressionism\, lived in Crystal Palace for a year 150 years ago. Let’s look at places he painted back then and see how things have changed. He had family in West Dulwich and West Norwood so we include these places on our tour\n\nSadly there are a lot of rail engineering works next weekend but please bring your travel pass so we can use buses as required.  There is a 468 bus from Croydon South End which passes the Fairfield Hall\, Whitgift Centre and West Croydon stops.\n\nPlease bring water and snacks but we will pass plenty of places to top up on our travels. We’ll also find a pub to end our walk at – details to follow\n\nPS Pissarro married his wife Julie at Croydon Register Office!\n\nIt would be helpful to know if you intend to come along.\n\nIf you want any further information and where to meet contact Julie –  07931533785

SUMMARY:Walk and Picnic at Harrison Rocks
DESCRIPTION:A bright eyed Viewpoint reader has pointed out that the listing in the centre pages of Viewpoint refers to this event as a Climbing activity.\nThis is not a climbing event\, it’s a walk ! There might be some small hills to climb\, but no rock climbing is involved. \nNo special equipment is needed\, apart from the COPSE traditional and optional items of: bobble hat\, hiking boots\, gaiters\, compass\, OS Map\, sandwich\, drink\, rucksack\, anorak\, gloves\, and it’s hard to imagine needing more than sunhat\, shorts and sandals in this heat. \nAssemble at East Croydon by 10 to catch the 10:09 East Grinstead train\, change at Oxted for the Uckfield train. Get a return Ticket to Eridge. \nFirstly\, we will take the train down to Ashurst\, due in at 10:59. From Ashurst station\, we will walk South East\, via Groombridge. Groombridge is a sweet small town/larger village\, with the added bonus of a heritage railway. \nOur “picnic” is towards the end of the walk at Harrisons Rocks\, which are the closest climbing rocks to London\, and very popular. We are not planning any climbing\, and beware that there are vertical drops from the top of the rocks. The idea is to observe the spectacle of the rocks and the climbers\, from the ground. \nFrom the rocks\, it is not far to Eridge station for the train home. \nPath route shown in orange dots on the map. If we want a longer walk there is an option for an extra loop from the Rocks to Eridge\, marked in blue\, to explore more on the way. There are hourly trains at 51 minutes past\, and a convenient pub by the station to wait for the next train\, or the one after. The Huntsman\, open until 6pm.

SUMMARY:Game Night: Reminiscing
DESCRIPTION:Look\, I know it’s the absolutely last\, final and climactic episode of a certain tv show\, in which all will be finally revealed about Walter\, Jimmy\, Jesse\, Gus\, Kim (oh Kim!) and everyone else. But seriously\, you already know that everyone meets a horrible messy end\, it will still be there on Wednesday\, and you can catch it on Netflix for the next 30 years\, along with all that other stuff you were always going to watch one day*. \nNo\, what you need to do is turn up on Tuesday evening on our return to the Hall for a fascinating evening of Linda’s devising. It’s a Games evening focused on the only thing some of us are still capable of doing . . . \nReminiscing\nBring along nothing but your memories of jumpers for goalposts\, rationing\, manning the trenches\, sharing chewing gum\, bathing once a week in coal dust and – the ultimate deprivation – only one TV channel. Check here for inspiration. \nI’ll see you there! \n  \n  \n*Memo to self\, Wednesday: cancel Netflix!

SUMMARY:Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor
DESCRIPTION:Meet at East Croydon by 09:50 for the 10:03 train \nBack in the 70’s George Harrison bought the Hare Krishna movement a manor house in Hertfordshire. 50 years later it’s still going strong. \nVisitors are welcome\, and there are lots of activities. \nYou don’t need to join their cult to enjoy the visit\, just tell them you are already in COPSE. There is no entrance fee\, but it would be fair for us to all make a donation. \nWe have an offer from them to open their old gate in the village\, which is usually locked\, to let us in on foot. We could get our own monk to open the magic door to let us in like VIPs (Very Important Pilgrims). This might or might not happen. If not we can walk down to the main entrance by Holland Farm\, as shows on the map below. \nThey offer free food\, but it might still be a good idea to bring snacks and drinks. \nThe network of many footpaths would allow us to take an alternative route back to the station. Also we could continue West to return by Watford Junction.

SUMMARY:Morris Dancing - Display\, and Participation Option!
DESCRIPTION:These folk will be demonstrating and explaining some of the traditional rural dances that have stepped their way to Surrey from East Anglia. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPreviously\, our hall has resounded to the crashing of sticks from one of Croydon’s local Morris sides and the flourishing of garlands by women cloggers.  (Sorry\, Tim\, stick bashing not expected this week as we’ll be enjoying a different style\, although broomsticks might be involved!)  Some further info in the poster below. \nFor those inclined and encouraged\, there should be the chance to “have a go” – but no pressure to do so!   Please come along early so the spectacle can start at 8.30 pm. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:What is it?\nA walk around some Farleigh greenery – woods and fields\, mostly on footpaths. It leaves Fairfield Halls (stop KC\, outside Nestle / Gas Board buildings) at 10.00\, 10.15\, 10.30 and 10.45 and takes\, allegedly\, 21 minutes. So best catch the 10.30 bus or earlier. \n \nGet off at the Dove Close stop on Sandpiper Road\, and walk 100 yards or so down Old Farleigh Road to the entrance to the Woods. \n \n  \nHere are links to the full 433 route details and timetable. \nThere is also a bus 409 that runs about once an hour between Selsdon and East Grinstead  – I’ll let you work out if it’s any use\, the timetable is here. \nRefreshments?\nYes\, a lunch/snack stop at The Harrow is on the cards.

SUMMARY:Globe Theatre + London Walk\, second attempt: The Tempest
DESCRIPTION:The Show\, and Tickets\nDeja vu all over again. \nHaving organised the trip to the Globe on 8th July (which lots of people said they enjoyed) and then failed to get there myself because of Covid\, I’m determined to make it this year. So I’m proposing the same arrangement as before\, this time to see The Tempest. \n \nAgain\, I’m heading for the cheapo £5 standing ticket. Seats in the galleries are also available at £25 upwards. \nI’ve booked tickets for 9th September for 11 people\, of whom 9 are standing with us peasants. \nSome tickets are still available\, so if you want to join us you’re very welcome but please make your own booking at https://basket.shakespearesglobe.com/23881/23895. \nMore details of this show are here. \n\nThe Itinerary\nI’ll repeat the arrangements I failed to implement last time\, which were: \nI’ll be getting the train from East Croydon to Farringdon\, taking a leisurely\, easy and largely off-road 3.5 mile stroll through some interesting parts of the City to the South Bank\, gaining sustenance at Wagamama in Clink Street\, then on to The Globe. \nPlease feel free to join me at East Croydon\, Farringdon\, Wagamama or The Globe itself. Here’s my schedule: \n\n\n\n14.51\nDirect train from East Croydon (Platform 2) to Farringdon\, arriving 15.16 \nTrains are frequent these days – fallback is the 15.01\, arriving 15.26\n\n\n15.30\nSet off walking from Farringdon\n\n\n17.30ish \nWagamama Clink Street. \nThey don’t take bookings\, but they do squeeze people in!\n\n\n19:00\nAt The Globe\, ready for 19.30 performance\n\n\nLater\nPossible beers\, followed by train back to Croydon ad lib – Blackfriars is nearby and has fast trains to East Croydon.

SUMMARY:Conan Doyle talk by Bernard Winchester
DESCRIPTION:“COPSE. Come at once if convenient. If inconvenient\, come all the same.”†\nThis Tuesday Club Night we have a special presentation from Bernard Winchester\, whom you may have seen occasionally at the club. He is a member of the Norwood Society and an experienced and enlightening speaker. \nCome along to hear him on “Conan Doyle – the South Norwood Years”.  Doyle lived in Tennison Road\, South Norwood\, from 1891 to 1894.  This illustrated talk looks\, with some humour\, at his life\, works and surroundings during this period\, and concludes that it was also a crucial time in the career of Sherlock Holmes. \n\n\n\n\nWe expect this special event to be popular\, so please arrive promptly for an 8.30 start.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n† As Holmes (almost) said in The Creeping Man

SUMMARY:Travel Treasures - Members' Recommendations
DESCRIPTION:Some advance notice\, as your preparation and involvement is key to the success of the evening. \nCOPSErs are\, of course\, renowned globaltrotters\, and here’s your chance to share your vast experience with the rest of us. \n \nNext Tuesday club Night (20th September) is an evening of Travel Treasures. Melanie will coordinate your contributions\, but it’s essential that you get them to her in advance so she can put them together. \nIn her own words: \nNext week’s evening is designed for audience participation. \nI’d like people to stand up and talk about their super secret or amazingly fabulous travel recommendations\, whether that is an experience\, a hotel\, a restaurant\, a tourist attraction or something else. \nI’m looking for something you would definitely recommend onwards . \nFor ease of presentation on the evening\, my suggestion is that you send me the website link if there is one plus a couple of pictures (if you have them)  and a couple of words and I’ll put them together in one pdf file\, ready to be presented on the evening. \nMy ideas is that the individual will stand up on the night and tell us in 5 minutes or so a little bit about their recommendation. \nAt the end of the evening we should all have some fabulous ideas of places to visit or experiences to try out. \nI’m happy for these suggestions to be in London or anywhere else in the world. \nSurprise us – and make us all yearn to visit. \nWe NEED them passed on to me in advance so that the evening is a success. \n\nI’m expecting big support for Melanie’s initiative!
