SUMMARY:Conan Doyle talk by Bernard Winchester
DESCRIPTION:“COPSE. Come at once if convenient. If inconvenient\, come all the same.”†\nThis Tuesday Club Night we have a special presentation from Bernard Winchester\, whom you may have seen occasionally at the club. He is a member of the Norwood Society and an experienced and enlightening speaker. \nCome along to hear him on “Conan Doyle – the South Norwood Years”.  Doyle lived in Tennison Road\, South Norwood\, from 1891 to 1894.  This illustrated talk looks\, with some humour\, at his life\, works and surroundings during this period\, and concludes that it was also a crucial time in the career of Sherlock Holmes. \n\n\n\n\nWe expect this special event to be popular\, so please arrive promptly for an 8.30 start.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n† As Holmes (almost) said in The Creeping Man

SUMMARY:Travel Treasures - Members' Recommendations
DESCRIPTION:Some advance notice\, as your preparation and involvement is key to the success of the evening. \nCOPSErs are\, of course\, renowned globaltrotters\, and here’s your chance to share your vast experience with the rest of us. \n \nNext Tuesday club Night (20th September) is an evening of Travel Treasures. Melanie will coordinate your contributions\, but it’s essential that you get them to her in advance so she can put them together. \nIn her own words: \nNext week’s evening is designed for audience participation. \nI’d like people to stand up and talk about their super secret or amazingly fabulous travel recommendations\, whether that is an experience\, a hotel\, a restaurant\, a tourist attraction or something else. \nI’m looking for something you would definitely recommend onwards . \nFor ease of presentation on the evening\, my suggestion is that you send me the website link if there is one plus a couple of pictures (if you have them)  and a couple of words and I’ll put them together in one pdf file\, ready to be presented on the evening. \nMy ideas is that the individual will stand up on the night and tell us in 5 minutes or so a little bit about their recommendation. \nAt the end of the evening we should all have some fabulous ideas of places to visit or experiences to try out. \nI’m happy for these suggestions to be in London or anywhere else in the world. \nSurprise us – and make us all yearn to visit. \nWe NEED them passed on to me in advance so that the evening is a success. \n\nI’m expecting big support for Melanie’s initiative!

SUMMARY:Stanley Halls Ceilidh - a Chance to Dance!
DESCRIPTION:A good number of COPSErs regularly enjoyed these monthly sessions\, prior to lockdown.  If you look carefully at the photo below\, you may spot a couple of our Members enjoying themselves. \nTake your feet for a treat – my term for these traditional dances is “exercise with a smile on your face”! \n \nPrices:  We can gain a good price of £9 per person\, if we pre-book at least ten tickets.  (Normal advance adult tickets are £12\, on-the-door £15.)  Please come back to me\, as soon as possible\, if you’re able to join us on Friday.  I shall pay for the group’s tickets and you can settle with me on the evening.  (Obviously\, you need to be definite about coming to be included in this discounted price.) \nIf you have not been to a ceilidh/barn dance before\, do not fear; all the sequences of movements are explained by a “caller” and we usually have a very good time. \nThe Halls have a bar.  Parking is free in the area.  Public transport options are: \nBuses: Routes 196 and 410 stop directly outside of Stanley Arts. \nRoutes 75\, 157\, 197 and 312 stop within a few minutes’ walk. \nTrains: Stanley Arts is just a five minute walk from Norwood Junction station. \nDo come back to me with any queries. \nIreen Best 07968 035522 \n\nIn Stanley Arts’ own words: \nCome one\, come all for a night of dancing and merriment just like the good old days! \nBack in November 2019\, when no one knew the word “Covid”\, The Conquering Heroes played a ceilidh (traditional dance) at Stanley Halls and an amazing time was had by all. Now you – yes you! – can join us for such a night once again! \nCame last time? Relive the glory days of pre-pandemic life!  Missed out on the fun last time around? Don’t miss out again! Never heard of a ceilidh? Worried that you won’t know what do to? Think you are a terrible dancer? Have no fear! Our experienced callers will teach you the steps to some of the world’s favourite group and partner dances.

SUMMARY:First Aid and Safety with Red Cross Trainer
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAs a follow-on from our recent past attention to the safety arrangements for our Club activities\, e.g. a review of “Guidance for Walkers / Leaders” and advice on rucksack contents for emergencies etc.\, we shall be welcoming a First Aid Instructor this Tuesday.  Although a few years back we have had sessions from instructors able to join us in person\, this time the information will be via Zoom\, involving a Red Cross trainer very familiar with digital presentations. \nSome of us may already have good First Aid knowledge\, some of us may have very little.  Even those with the former can benefit from refreshing their skills and we can all be attentive to what might provide important help to our fellow COPSE Members in future circumstances. \nThere should be opportunities for questions and answers as the session progresses.  Do bring a pen and paper\, if you think noting down some facts would be useful to you. \nPlease arrive for teas and coffees at 8.15pm so that we can open our Red Cross Zoom at 8.30pm.

SUMMARY:Women Spitfire Pilots - talk by Clare Walker
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, 164 women flew as pilots in the Air Transport Auxiliary\,\nplaying their part in the delivery of 308\,000 aircraft. They flew in wartime\nconditions\, in all weathers and many times without ever having flown a\nparticular aircraft type before. It cost 14 of them their lives. \nAfter the war\, they became known as ‘The Forgotten Pilots’ and were expected to\nquietly return to civilian life. But as their numbers have dwindled to just a few\,\ntheir remarkable achievements have once again brought them back into the\nspotlight. \nClare Walker is passionate about keeping these amazing women pilots alive in\nthe public memory. Her illustrated talk includes video footage\, as well as\nphotographs from the archives of the Air Transport Auxiliary Association’s files\,\nincluding those in the collection of ATA founder and commandant\, Gerard\nd’Erlanger. \nVisit her website for more details of her work.
