SUMMARY:Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:A Tour de France . . .  Italy and Portugal\, by way of their wines\n \nThis year’s hotly anticipated Wine event is Tuesday evening at the Hall\, and is a little different this time as we won’t have a competitive element. Let Alan explain: \nHello all\, \nTuesday’s wine tasting is more of a wine tour.  It will explore three general areas – Northern Portugal\,  Southern France and Southern Italy – whilst introducing a local white and red wine from each.  There will be no marking or accumulation of points.  I cannot tell whether a wine has any of the wondrous & bizarre characteristics that wine snobs attribute to them & so neither will you be required to.  What I can tell is whether I like it\,  whether I feel food will improve it and whether I am prepared to pay the price asked for it & that is all that is expected of you. \nThis time all will be revealed up front.  Name\,  location\,  grapes\,  bottle blurb and price \nAs usual with me there will be no chardonnay\,  no cabernet & none else of that ilk.  Europe has a vast array of grapes\,  all of which respond to local conditions and\,  because of that\,  winemakers are presented with fascinating challenges and opportunities. \nWe will be trying minute selection of how winemakers respond.   \nRegrettably the accompaniments will not be as suggested on the bottle.  So\,  where suggested\,  wine will not be served with delights such as seafood.  Sauternes will not be served &\,  even if it was\,  there would be no Foie gras served alongside.  There will however be substitutes that should complement the wines \nSo come along with your £3 cash\,  enjoy a taste\,  contemplate and perhaps be persuaded to visit to the environs these wines come from. \n  \nNote that £3 cash please! I’m sure you’ve got some at the bottom of a drawer somewhere. \nTurn up and enjoy!

SUMMARY:Kew Gardens Christmas Winter Light Show
DESCRIPTION:As part of their Christmas celebrations\, Kew Gardens are running their annual spectacular Winter Lights trail through the gardens from 15 November 2023 to 7 January 2024. I am intending to go on Wednesday 22 November arriving for the 6pm time slot. Anyone who would like to join me would be very welcome. I went to this trail last year and can thoroughly recommend it. \nYou will need to buy your own ticket. If the 6pm time slot is sold out you could try and book for the 6.20 slot. The cost is £22.50 (off peak charge) Plus £2.50 transaction fee. You can protect your ticket against illness or accident for £1.65. It also protects against transport disruption\, not known about at the time of booking. To buy tickets go to https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens/whats-on/christmas. There you will find all the information you need. You should note that there are no refunds for bad weather unless the event is cancelled because of safety concerns. \n If you are joining me make sure you pick the 6pm time slot (if it’s still available) and if\, like me\, you are coming by public transport also pick the Elizabeth Gate as your entry point. If coming by car you can reserve a space when you purchase your ticket in Kew’s Ferry Lane Car Park. There are also spaces at the National Archives Car Park. Your entry point would be the Brentford Gate. For those who haven’t been there\, Kew Gardens is easy to reach by train from East Croydon via Clapham Junction to Kew Bridge Station\, from where it’s an 8-10 minute walk to the gardens. \nThe trail is approximately 3 km and takes up to 2 hours to walk through. Once you are inside the gardens you can spend as long as you like\, although there is a one way system. There are stalls along the way selling food and hot drinks. The cafe by the Victoria Gate will also be open. The trail is described on the website as follows \nIt’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. \nDiscover glittering tunnels of light\, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour. \nFor a moment of reflection\, pause at mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden\, wander beneath larger-than-life illuminations and don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way. \nPlease let me know if you would like to join me – It’s best that you buy your ticket(s) as soon as possible since this event is very popular. Depending on the interest I will send out details later of meeting times at either East Croydon or the Elizabeth Gate.

SUMMARY:Bravo Britain (Part 1)!
DESCRIPTION:Ireen writes:\nMany of us might enjoy visits now and then to some sunny\, hot and exotic places – yes\, very nice to experience.  However\, that is not exactly what you will find presented in our hall this week! \nWithout any “Rule Britannia” jingoism or mention of that conflicting “B**x*t” word\, we shall journey to places around our own lands\, feeling that “Bravo Britain” can aptly be claimed. \nSo much home territory deserves a good focus.  In fact\, so much that this travelogue now needs to be just “Part 1”!  Please come along to find us travelling from South Croydon to other parts of Great Britain.  “Holiday at Home” / “Staycation”\, perhaps\, as we share featured places. \nA road trip awaits you.  Become a passenger this Tuesday!

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys
DESCRIPTION:Where?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys from Westminster to the City of London. I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys? \n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. Most significantly for us\, from 1660 to 1669 he wrote a daily diary describing events high and low. He was a man on the rise with connections to politics and royalty\, but determined to enjoy life with visits to taverns and theatres\, domestic life with his French wife\, and furtive dalliances with a variety of disreputable ladies. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.05 Croydon Platform 1 to Victoria\, then District & Circle line to Westminster. \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nVictoria station from our scheduled arrival time 12.21\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/venue.runner.slurs\n\n\n\n\noutside Westminster underground station\, Victoria Embankment (Exit 2 – statue of Boudicca) from about 12.45\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/manliness.fact.proper\n\n\n\n. \nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n\nWhat3Words\nExplanation is here. SUMMARY:Black Swan Morris
DESCRIPTION:A Winter Warmer?\nThe very energetic black and purple clad “Black Swan” will be raising the temperature in our hall this week!  They will be stepping  through their many moves and demonstrating how a Border Morris side successfully thrashes at its members with no-one coming to harm. \nEntertaining to watch and striking(!) to listen to as they rhythmically wield their sticks\, as if they are percussive additions to the music.  (Yes\, live musicians come as part of the deal.)  Participation by any COPSErs is definitely optional not obligatory – but most previous visiting Morris sides have had a good many of us on our feet\, when the chance to dance a tune or two has been offered. \n \nSome of us have already enjoyed watching Black Swan when our Tuesday evening involved attending Cryer Arts in Carshalton.  Come along to amuse yourselves this week\, with the Club Night when they come to us! \n

SUMMARY:Xmas Party
DESCRIPTION:We invite you all to create and enjoy some seasonal jollity on Tuesday evening. There’ll be food\, drink\, music and activities – but note no food laid on.\n \nYour part in proceedings is essential\, so please read the following carefully: \n\nNo cooking will be done at the Hall this time. Please bring along whatever you fancy and be ready to share. We aim for many people bringing modest amounts – you don’t need to feed the whole party!\nNobody’s washing up\, so you need to bring your own supplies of eating and drinking equipment – and take it away afterwards. Plate\, knife\, fork\, glass\, mug . . .\nBooze and soft drinks: BYOB is the watchword. We’ll supplement your offerings with our remaining supplies of beer (Nigerian Guinness!)\, wine and soft drinks\, and we’re promised a secret-recipe punch\, but if you have a particular preference then please bring it along.\nSecret Santa: there’s still time to read and act on Ireen’s email on this!\nHall preparation: we didn’t schedule a Club Night to do this\, so will try to get in early on Tuesday to brighten the place up a bit. If you have spare lights\, streamers or anything else festive then please be ready to use it.\nWear something Christmassy\, and above all enjoy the evening!\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The usual route from Crystal Palace Station been changed to include Croydon’s “lesser known” parks\, some of which were mentioned by Nicola Hunt in her very interesting “100 spaces in 100 days” COPSE talk in October. \nThese are the afternoon’s details\, which  you can join at any time \nPart 1\n12 noon: meet at Thornton Heath station (either by train\, 468 bus or 50 bus from Croydon) \nA four mile “easy” walk to Streatham High Road via Norbury Hall (or squirrel 🐿) Park\, Norbury Park\, Norwood Grove\, Streatham Common + the Rookery gardens which has toilets + a cafe \nPart 2\nAbout 3.30pm to 6pm: “The Bull” pub (Young’s) on Streatham High Road for either a meal or drinks\, where I might need to book a table inside but there is a large covered garden outside with wall heaters. \nSTOP PRESS 5th Jan:\nI’ve now booked a long table on Sunday afternoon for ten people in the main bar from 3pm onwards on a “first come\, first served basis”. \nPart 3\n6.45pm start: Streatham Redhawks v Oxford City Stars ice hockey match  🏒  🥅   ⛸ where you might need to book advance tickets to avoid queuing = £13.50 (adults) or £8.50 (over 60s + concessions) \nIf you have any questions\, please let me know. \nKeith Southam \nkeithsoutham@yahoo co.uk \nmobile/text = 07749 515486 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shelterbox Auction
DESCRIPTION:Again\, New Year greetings to all COPSErs – and we look forward to having you crowd through our hall door next Tuesday\, 9th January\, in order to make it better for other people!\nOur start to 2024 will be our annual “Mystery Auction” in support of the charity we collectively support each year.* Hopefully\, this is recalled and understood by our more established Members but\, lovely newer ones\, please read on! \nThe procedure involves us bringing along to Club Night any duplicated Xmas items that we may have received – or others that we feel might be more welcomed in someone else’s home! Also\, unwanted but reasonable donations of other things\, e.g. an appliance you might have bought and planned to use but found you never have. Basically\, not just rubbish but something you donate that another might happily gain! \nPlease wrap items “anonymously” without disclosing the packages’ contents and slip them to me\, when you arrive. The fun of the evening is that people bid for something but don’t know what they will get! Of course\, the success of the auction relies on the generous spirit\, pockets\, wallets and purses of everyone attending. I.O.U.s can be noted and cheques passed. Treasurer Bob will once more be collecting your funds. \nIf you have an item of particular value\, we can set a “reserve” start price. Likewise\, please speak to me before the auction begins\, should you be donating something specifically suited for only one gender -although we have had a good laugh when\, for example\, a lacy camisole top was successfully bid for by one of our strapping gents! \n* The recipient of all our early 2024 goodwill is ShelterBox\, the charity very suited to COPSE in that we camp and enjoy outdoor living “for leisure and pleasure” and ShelterBox provides emergency supplies for people having to camp merely to survive. In brief:\n“YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP PEOPLE AFFECTED BY DISASTER AROUND THE WORLD” \n\nFuller details via: https://shelterbox.org/ \nEvery year that we have raised our £££s for the charity\, we have achieved the purchase of a complete box\, currently costing £590. Since our Jan ’23 auction\, we have a kitty put aside from people’s kind contributions later in the year from purchasing other COPSErs unwanted kit etc. This stands at £138. With a big push from our good- hearted folk next week\, we may again achieve buying one more full box! Advance thanks to all who can come along. \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522)

SUMMARY:Green Chain Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet at West Croydon station by 9.40 for the 9.48 Overground train to Penge West arr 9.58\, calling at Norwood Junction 9.53. You can also get there by 197 bus (alight Penge W. station.) \nFollow the Green Chain Walk via Beckenham Place Park to Mottingham. About 8 miles\, but could be shortened. \nThe Green Chain Walk is a network of walks in S.E. London linking up green spaces. \nWe are going to walk the stage from the edge of Crystal Palace Park to Grove Park. \nIt is an easy fairly level walk through parks and streets. It could be a bit muddy in places. So don’t wear your best shoes! \nAlso it is quite cold for easy urban walking\, so wear warm clothes!. About 7.5 miles with possibilities of leaving the walk early. \nYou can bring a packed lunch but there will be a cafe stop at Beckenham Place Park. \nReturn from Grove Park by train via London (for those with free travel!) or Bromley North. By bus 261 to Bromley then 119 to Croydon. \nBarry

SUMMARY:Burns Night
DESCRIPTION:The Programme:\n\nPlease note we’ll be taking £3 at the door to cover costs for this evening – a bargain any Scotsman would be proud to claim! \nFair fa’ your honest\, sonsie face\nWe didn’t argue with that sentiment last year (or the year before)\, and everyone had such a good time that we’re doing it again. \nIf you have yet to be convinced of haggis’s virtues (or even if you have been)\, roll up on Tuesday evening for a treat of said puddin’\, with its traditional embellishments of bashed neeps\, mashed spuds\, and whatever trimmings we can muster. There will even be a dram in it for those keen on the true Caledonian experience\, along with the joyful skirl provided by our in-house piper and traditional poetry read in excruciatingly inaccurate Scottish accents. \nPlease note that\, due to government restrictions\, we will be using only left-handed specimens\, humanely caught by burly\, kilted highlanders using extra strong butterfly nets. \nBut\n(I hear you ask) \nwhat’s my part in all this magnificence?\nWell\, there are a few things you should be aware of . . . . \n1. In the interests of simplicity and getting home before dawn\, we’re not washing up! Bring your own plate\, glass and cutlery\, and take them home at the end of the evening. \n2. Drink provided is limited to Scotch and Highland Water for the toasts – in addition\, of course\, to the regular tea & coffee service graciously provided by Olga William. If your tastes veer in other directions\, please feel free to bring your own choice of tipple. \n3. For the furtherance of jollity and the spirit of the evening\, any vaguely Scottish apparel is encouraged. If you can’t stretch to a kilt\, how about tartan socks or a Hamilton Accies away strip? \nAnd a special request: if you’re coming along and you’re of a vegetarian persuasion\, please let Ken know quickly so that your needs can be accommodated. \nLooking forward to that haggis already. No\, don’t ask me what’s in it! \n(I know\, all shamelessly pasted in from last year’s web page pasted in from the previous year’s email. Life’s still too short . . . )

SUMMARY:London Loop walk: Hamsey Green to Oaks Park
DESCRIPTION:We will be continuing the London LOOP\, picking up from where we left off (last March!!) at Hamsey Green\, and probably get as far as Oaks Park (8 and a half miles). But wherever we stop there are buses back into Croydon. \nJust to remind\, the LOOP is the London Outer Orbital Path which goes around London through the greener parts\, parks\, commons\, etc. and occasional delights of suburbia\, and is around 150 miles in all! \nThe terrain is gently undulating\, with some mud – some places of refreshment en route\, you can leave at Kenley\, Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park. \nTime and place. Meet up at the bus stop outside Fairfield Halls by 10am\, and we’ll take the first 403 bus to Hamsey Green.

SUMMARY:Builders Arms Quiz
DESCRIPTION:Dear Non-Skiers\, \nAs many of us will not be away to the mountains for physical exercise in the snow\, we plan to join up for some mental exercise at the pub quiz put on by “The Builders Arms”.  I have been able to reserve tables for three Club teams of six people in each.  Some COPSErs have already contacted me to go on our list but there remain vacancies so please let me know if you can join us. \nOur Club has competed at this pub several times previously – but never been the winners!  We shall try yet again!! \nThe quiz begins at 9pm but\, usually\, most of us gather by about 8pm to order food and share a social chat.  The cost\, per person\, to engage in this brain strain will be £1\, collected on the night. \nThe pub is on Leslie Park Road\, off Cherry Orchard Road.  Map link: \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/The+Builders+Arms\,+65+Leslie+Park+Rd\,+Croydon+CR0+6TP/@51.3795193\,-0.0883854\,17z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x487600d1c1496087:0x2875af15ab41667a!8m2!3d51.3794959!4d-0.0858239!16s%2Fg%2F1tgf2pmv?entry=ttu \nWhat3Words: https://w3w.co/locker.hotels.owner \nThe new management since our last visit there tell me they now have a new and varied menu available: \nhttps://buildersarmscroydon.co.uk/admin/upload_file/menus/7hbmj70v4q.pdf \nPlease note\, there will be not be a COPSE meeting at our South Croydon hall.  Do let me know\, a.s.a.p.\, if you plan to come to the quiz so that you can secure your place on the list. \nRegards\, \n  \nIreen Best (07968 035522) \n

SUMMARY:continuing with the London LOOP . . .
DESCRIPTION:Continue from Coulsdon around to Oaks Park\, onward to cross the ‘mad mile’ at Banstead Downs\, and then towards Nonsuch Park & site of Nonsuch Palace\, and possibly as far as Ewell. Potentially as much as 8 miles or so\, with some mud and some suburban pavements. Refreshment possibilities in Coulsdon\, Clockhouse\, Oaks Park\, Nonsuch Park\, and perhaps other unexpected places. A chance to leave at Clockhouse (bus)\, Oaks Park (166 bus)\, Banstead (train)\, Ewell East & Cheam (train and bus) and in the possibly unlikely event we get as far as Ewell village it’s the train from Ewell West back to East Croydon\, via Clapham Junction. \nMeet in Coulsdon (get there by many buses from Croydon) outside the Pembroke pub (which opens at 10am so one could have something there first) by 10.35am to set off at 10.45am. (The Pembroke pub (a Wetherspoon-like place) is in central Coulsdon\, just near the start of where the Chipstead Valley Road branches off from Brighton Road and is near a Tesco-Express – we finished by going in there last Sunday.) \nAdventures in store no doubt…as we found last Sunday and other times\, one can never be sure what’s gonna happen while walking the LOOP\, it’s almost enough to send you loopy! \n  \nPaul Newbold\, 07968 223589 \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Walk with Pepys - Stroll 2*
DESCRIPTION:We all enjoyed the Pepys Walk on 10th December\, so here’s the second instalment.\nWhere?\nThis Sunday\, join me for a stroll through some familiar parts of London with a historical context. We’re going to follow the 17th Century footsteps of Samuel Pepys\, this time around the streets of the City of London. Again I’ll be your amateur guide\, book in hand\, pointing out the connections to Pepys on the way. No doubt other COPSErs will chip in with their own observations! \nThis will be an easy 2-3 hour walk along pavements (boots not required) for about 4 miles\, ending with an optional beer or two at a historic tavern that also serves food. \nWho was Pepys?\n \nA man who lived through the upheavals of the Civil War\, the execution of Charles I\, the reign of Cromwell and the subsequent restoration of the Monarchy with Charles II. \nGetting there\nI’ll be catching the 12.03 East Croydon Platform 2 to Blackfriars\, exiting on the North side\, where the walk starts \nJoining opportunities: \n\n\n\n\n\nEast Croydon station from 11.50\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/dock.jars.folds\n\n\n\n\nOutside Blackfrairs Underground  station from our scheduled arrival time about 12.30\n\n\nhttps://w3w.co/crazy.ripe.good\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall me (number below) if any difficulty joining up. \nThe return trip will be at your leisure – there are good services to East Croydon from Blackfriars\, or you could catch a bus or tube back to Victoria. \nLinks\nPepys’s diary for this day 363 years ago: https://www.pepysdiary.com/ \nGeneral info on Pepys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys \nContact\nKen on 07921 258876 \n*I know\, this was originally advertised as a Country Walk. SUMMARY:Pancakes (Shrove Tuesday)
DESCRIPTION:The time for tossing and turning has come around again – no\, not a reference to restless sleep but a reminder that the COPSE Pancake Night will be this week!  A flipping good time can be had. 😁 \nPackets of batter mix with  “just add milk” (or even just water?) are available in many supermarkets for those COPSErs who wish to keep things simple\, although others might like to make their own from scratch\, of course.  Whichever you prefer\, please provide your own batter and accompanying filling ingredients. \nAlso\, we do need to have some extra cooking appliances\, if possible\, so please bring any camping stoves or portable electric hobs you may own\, along with frypans\, spatulas\, plates and cutlery.  (As with our recent Burns Night feast\, clearing away is so aided if COPSErs can pop their own used items into a bag to take back home for cleaning.) \nDuring the evening\, indulge yourselves with self-made food – and become creative by experimenting.  Try the challenge of concocting unusual toppings / fillings and perhaps tempt other brave people to try your results!  Below are some of both savoury and sweet efforts from past years.  (The idea is to not have tried out your thoughts in advance!) \nSavoury\nMushrooms with garlic\, onions\, mixed herbs and cream \nGrated mature Cheddar cheese with optional pickle \nBlue cheese (“upmanship”!) with sun-dried tomatoes \nSardines \nMexican chilli beef \nSweet\nMaltesers \nNutella chocolate spread \nChristmas pudding with crème fraîche (over ten months to replace the pud!) \nLemon curd sprinkled with ground ginger \nA slight spread of butter\, drizzled over by various flavoured coffee syrups \n… and\, of course\, the traditional fresh lemon juice and sugar! \nAs well as devouring our pancakes\, we may once more have a tossing contest for anyone who wishes to take part.  (Appropriate photo of Tim wheeled out again.) \n \nCome to beat and eat\, chew and chat.  Shrove Tuesday usually proves to be a pleasantly sociable Club Night. \n  \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522)
