SUMMARY:Coastal Walk from Norman's Bay to Hastings
DESCRIPTION:We will follow the coastline from Norman’s Bay to Hastings\, a distance of approximately 13km. \nHere follows an outline of what is planned and what you need to do to join me on this walk if you’re interested.\n\nI will be going by train to the coast and will alight at Norman’s Bay which is on the same line that goes on to Hastings. If you would like to join me\, I will be at the front of East Croydon station at 9.45 and we will catch the 10.02 Southern train to Hastings that should be leaving from platform 3. You will need to get a return to Hastings which will allow us to get out at Norman’s Bay and to return from Hastings.  At the moment\, ticket prices with a railcard are showing up on https://uk.trip.com/ at around 18 pounds.\n\nFrom Norman’s Bay\, the plan is to walk along the seafront towards Hastings for a distance of around 9 miles.  The tide will be high but we should be able to pass along the beach. I have done this walk before but the tide was not high at the time. It is mostly flat though we will be walking along shingle for part of the way. If you do not wish to do the whole distance there are options for catching the train prior to getting to Hastings.\n\nWe will be passing through Bexhill on the way where we will stop to visit the De La Warr Pavilion which has three art exhibitions on over the summer. https://www.dlwp.com/.  Food and drink will be available in Bexhill and in Hastings but depending on your personal needs you may need to carry water and additional food.\n\nIf you would like to meet us at Norman’s Bay or elsewhere\, please let me know. The train will be arriving at Norman’s Bay at 11.30. You can contact me on the day by phone. My number is 0750 284 8808.\n\nFingers crossed for good weather on the 4th.\n\nGreg

SUMMARY:Film Night 📽
DESCRIPTION:Movie fun with Andrew and Sandra.\nAndrew says: \nDear All.   \nWhile Ken takes a break\, Sandra and I are overseeing next Tuesday.  We’ve have decided it will be a Film Night.  Your participation is “Paramount” to its success. \nIt will be like the literary (book) evening but centred around films (i.e. feature / cinema type).  We’d like attendees to talk about/share\, briefly\, films and/or moments in films that they enjoy and think are worth shouting about. \nEven better\, would be to have a clip of the film.  We will endeavour to facilitate this.  To help\, please email me (andrewthynne@hotmail.com<mailto:andrewthynne@hotmail.com>) details to help us locate it on the world wide web.  Many clips are likely to be on YouTube.  Better still if you can download it to a usb stick and bring that.  (Search “how to download youtube videos”.) \nIf it’s a film web location that you can notify us of\, it would help us enormously if you do this soon. \nThe criteria for film clips are: \n  *   Feature / cinema film \n  *   A short video from of a COPSE event \n  *   Something that will be of interest to COPSE members\, e.g. to do with travel\, outdoors \nIf you can’t bring a clip\, don’t worry\, just be willing to tell us about it.  If you can’t remember the name of the film\, we can play “guess the film from the description”. \nSee you on Tuesday. \nAndrew

SUMMARY:"Now 90!" Croydon Green Spaces Challenge Walk: Upper Centre
DESCRIPTION:This walk will form part of COPSE’s 90th anniversary Challenge\, overall visiting\, appropriately enough\, a total of 90 of Croydon’s green spaces. On this occasion we’ll focus on those in the Upper Central parts of the Borough. \nFull details of the Challenge are at the bottom of this page. \nYou don’t have to take on the Challenge though\, you can just come along and enjoy the walk. \nTake your pick of the two options: a full day or a half day. \nThe Full Day \nSun 11 August – “upper centre” – approx. 15 miles across the upper belly/mid-section of Croydon from Addiscombe to Addington\, Shirley\, Lloyd Park\, the town centre and as far west as Waddon Ponds.  See indicative route map below.  Note there is a mid-point / lunch stop where it is convenient to leave / join the walk.  And the afternoon section passes many public transport options if you wish to leave before the end.\nBring plenty of food and drink with you.  There will be limited opportunities to top up but at the mid-point is a Harvester pub – that’s Addington Village.  Where we can pop in for a drink.  Possibly a bite to eat if there’s time – but don’t bank on it!  Towards the end of the walk we pass through the town centre and therefore shops for refreshments top up.  Andy Thompson (“Mapman”) will be leading the walk (I hope to join at the mid-point.)\n\n\n\nThe Morning Section\nFrom Addiscombe Tram Stop to Harvesters Cricketers\, Addington Village \nStart / meet at Addiscombe tram stop at 9am. That’s on the Elmers End / Beckenham Jct branch of the tram.  Note the early start.\n\nThe Afternoon Section\nFrom Harvesters Cricketers\, Addington Village to Duppas Hill. \nWe will be at the Harvesters Cricketers from approximately 1pm and plan to set off  an hour later. This midpoint/lunch point is close to Addington Village (interchange) tramstop. \nEnding\nAfternoon cessation: the afternoon route (and morning to a large extent) passes a number of bus routes and a tram stops so you can leave the walk conveniently before its end.  But please ensure you inform Andy\, the walk leader. \n\n \nSo What’s this Challenge?\nOver four walks we will visit 90 green spaces.  Visit between 30 and 90 spaces and you will receive an award – bronze\, silver\, or gold for the full 90!  And you will have your achievements recognised at the “NOW 90!” Birthday event on Saturday 14 September. \n\n\n\n\nWhat\, Croydon has 90 green spaces?\nYep\, in fact 120 according to this map.\nClick it for full revelation!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nWhat sort of walks?\nEach complete walk will be around 13 miles.  As they are local and near public transport\, it will be possible to join for part of the walk either at predetermined points or by arrangement.  Clock up as many green spaces as you can while enjoying Croydon’s outstanding open spaces and landscape. \nRoutes will include streets\, parks\, footpaths and lanes.  Good walking shoes should be adequate.  To be eligible to receive an award there will be a small administration fee of £1. \nWhen are they?\nCurrently the four walks’ dates are: \n\nSunday 14 July\nSunday 11 August\nMonday 26 August (bank holiday)\nSunday 1 September.\n\nWe hope to repeat some or all of the walks during the week to enable as many as possible to participate. \nSo how do I start?\nJust turn up to any of the walks! \n\nAny questions / more information please contact me. \nAndrew Thynne \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:The Great North Wood: talk by CJ Schüler
DESCRIPTION:C. J. Schüler is a freelance writer\, journalist and cultural historian specialising in travel\, the arts\, the environment\, and European fiction in translation. \nIn this talk he will expand on a subject close to his heart and ours in COPSE: the history of the Great North Wood that once covered large areas of South London and still survives in patches as a series of open spaces\, targets for a number of Club walks. \nFrom the Amazon page for his book: \n \nStanding in the busy streets of South London today\, it is hard to imagine that much of this suburban townscape was once a vast wood\, stretching unbroken for almost seven miles from Croydon to the Thames at Deptford. \nIn The Wood That Built London\, C.J. Schüler takes us on a journey through time\, telling tales of invaders and trade guilds\, map makers and soldiers\, royals and working class people. From the 8th century to current conservation efforts\, Schüler offers a fresh perspective on London’s history\, with tales of murder\, Anglo-Saxon treasure\, fires\, pandemics\, the blitz and more along the way. \nThis compelling narrative history charts the fortunes of the North Wood from the earliest times: its ecology\, ownership\, management\, and its gradual encroachment by the expanding metropolis. \nMore information can be found on his website at https://cjschuler.com/. The following is extracted from his ‘About’ page: \nHis latest book\, My Dear Mr Rose: Letters to the Honorary Secretary of the Authors’ Club\, 1908–34\, appeared in a numbered limited edition by the Authors’ Club on 11 May 2023. \nThe Wood That Built London\, a history of the woodland that once covered much of South London\, was published by Sandstone Press on 7 October 2021. His travelogue Along the Amber Route: St Petersburg to Venice (also from Sandstone)\, hailed as ‘timely and powerful’ by the Financial Times on its publication in February 2020\, was shortlisted for Stanford Dolman Award and longlisted for the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize. \nHe is also the author of  Writers\, Lovers\, Soldiers\, Spies: A History of the Authors’ Club of London\, 1891–2016 (Author’s Club\, 2016)\, published in 2016 to wide acclaim\, and three illustrated histories of cartography: Mapping the World (Éditions Place des Victoires/Frechmann\, 2010)\, Mapping the City and Mapping the Sea and Stars (2012). \nC. J. Schüler has written for The Independent\, The Independent on Sunday\, The Tablet\, the Financial Times and the New Statesman. A former staff member with with the Rough Guides and The Independent\, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2011\, and was chairman of the Authors’ Club from 2008 to 2015. \nAn experienced public speaker\, he has addressed literary festivals\, bookshop events\, learned societies and community groups\, and is available for speaking engagements.

The route takes in unusual woods and parks in undulating countryside on the fringes and midsection of Croydon – from Addington to Purley via Selsdon. \nAn indicative sketch map is below but note there are two further green spaces not shown which will take the total in this walk to 30. \n \n\nThe Morning Section\nMEET 9am EAST CROYDON tramstop (15 miles to end): \nWe start walking from a bus stop in New Addington/Field Way.  But we meet at East Croydon tramstop at 9am to catch the tram to Addington Village.  If the bus timings appear suitable we will transfer at the Addington Village interchange to a bus.  (But if my travel app advises a long wait\, we may continue by tram to Field Way tramstop and walk from there.)  You could intercept us at Addington Village or tramstops on the way – just contact me to check our whereabouts.   Expect to start walking at 9.30am. \nMid-Morning Joining Option\n(11.4 miles to end): \nAfter circling New Addington we make a jaunt by tram from Kings Henry’s Drive tramstop to Coombe Lane tramstop and continue walking from there.   YOU COULD JOIN THE WALK AT COOMBE LANE tramstop – approx. time there 11.15 – please phone me to check.  You can thereby cut out 3.75 miles but miss some great scenery (yes there is some!) at New Addington. \nAnother Intermediate Point Early Lunchtime\n(9.5 miles to end): \nWe reach Selsdon and the SIR JULIAN HUXLEY WETHERSPOON pub at approx.  12.00 to 12.30 and depart there approx. 13.00.   Other cafes nearby are available.   Call me to check our timings. \nLate Lunch Joining Option\n(6 miles to end): \nWe reach Sanderstead pond and the adjoining parade of shops (Limpsfield Road) approx. 14.45 to 15.15.  Phone me to check timings.  There is a “Filtr”  café of which we may well avail ourselves. \n\nEnding\nWe END at Purley Rotary Field (Brighton Road\, town centre\, Purley).  We may well fall into the Jolly Farmers pub at Purley Cross to revive ourselves.  Approx 6.30pm I estimate.   From Purley there are of course buses and trains to the rest of the world. \n\nBring\nSuitable attire / footwear and sun protection\, food / snacks / drink etc.   We should be able to buy refreshments at the Wetherspoon pub at Selsdon (early lunch\, “Sir Julian  Huxley”) and at a café on Sanderstead (Limpsfield Road) parade.  But bring sustenance to keep you going just in case.   And bring a suitable pass for tram and bus travel. \n  \n\n \nSo What’s this Challenge?\nOver four three walks we will visit 90 green spaces.  Visit between 30 and 90 spaces and you will receive an award – bronze\, silver\, or gold for the full 90!  And you will have your achievements recognised at the “NOW 90!” Birthday event on Saturday 14 September. \n\n\n\n\nWhat\, Croydon has 90 green spaces?\nYep\, in fact 120 according to this map.\nClick it for full revelation!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nWhat sort of walks?\nEach complete walk will be around 15 miles. \nWhen are they?\nCurrently the four five six walks’ dates are: \n\nSunday 14 July: North\nSunday 11 August: Upper Centre\nWednesday 21 August: repeat of North\nMonday 26 August (bank holiday): Lower Centre\nSunday 1 September: repeat of Upper Centre\nThursday 5 September: repeat of Lower Centre\n\nSo how do I start?\nJust turn up to any of the walks! \n\nAny questions / more information please contact me. \nAndrew Thynne \n07985 936953

SUMMARY:Electile Dysfunction
DESCRIPTION:Just when you thought it was all over . . . . \nYes\, there will be some back-focus on aspects of the recent past that we have probably felt we’ve moved on from.  However\, this Tuesday evening will involve a light-hearted\, quick-fire quiz\, looking at some quirky and interesting facts concerning our recent General Election (😱)\, plus various “political” connections that many of us will think we might know / ought to know  / could be amused by!  History and the present entwined. \nPlease come along for an 8.30pm start. (Coffees and teas will be available until just before that time.)  Test yourselves with this quiz of “essential” information\, concerning our government and democracy!  You might be able to impress your fellow COPSErs with how much you already know – although we can all expect to learn some unexpected things\, during the  course of the evening! \nN.B.  In our programme listings\, the title for this Club Night is the work of Mr. Brogan. 😆 \nRegards\, \nIreen Best (07968 035522) \n  \n
